That was time well spent
Yikes, where were you tested?

Wondering if they failed to store the samples properly meaning they couldnt be processed or a case of too many to process?

Ive heard any testing site run by Laverty and Forcite is to be avoided. Histopath and hospital sites still returning results the fastest.

Decided to stuff around doing a PCR test early in the week in the hope that it comes back positive so I can start the process of getting a recovery certificate.

Tested Monday, received this yesterday;

“Your COVID-19 PCR sample is no longer suitable to be tested and no result can be provided. If currently symptomatic, assume you are positive and arrange rapid antigen or repeat PCR swab confirmation as appropriate.”

That was time well spent 🙄
So that means they didn’t get to test the sample quickly enough? Though you don’t say if the test was necessarily because you thought you probably had COVID. If just to get a recovery cert, why clog the system.

Anyway… I think it’s pretty safe to assume when NSW get around to adding a form on their website for RATs they could well be at 100k reported infections a day…. Perhaps the ‘real number’ might even be 150/175k.

Which means the peak actually might be earlier than they have forecast….

Melbourne presser just said any pcr samples taken 7 or more days ago that have not yet been processed wont be, as obviously pointless.

Gladstone Park in Melbourne. Can't remember the name of the provider.

So that means they didn’t get to test the sample quickly enough? Though you don’t say if the test was necessarily because you thought you probably had COVID. If just to get a recovery cert, why clog the system.

Because I don't want to get stuck overseas?

So, why would you bother getting tested at all?

I totally agree. But this is the system they've created for us. I also don't get access to free RATs (not that I'm sure they'd be acceptable for a recovery anyway).

Tasmanian hospital services under review as reduced staff takes a toll

Services at both the Royal Hobart Hospital and the Launceston General Hospital are being reviewed because of the reduced number of available staff, with more than 200 isolating with the virus or as close contacts.

State Health Commander Kathrine Morgan-Wickssays the resumption of normal surgery levels after the holiday period was originally scheduled for Monday but has to be reassessed.

"[It] will be reviewed to ensure emergency surgery and inpatient services are prioritised, with elective surgery to continue depending on staffing levels being safely maintained," she says.

Staff have been asked to reconsider leave arrangements.

Qld

18,000 positives (including 4320 RAT+), 402 hospital, 22 ICU

School delayed to 7/2 (year 11 and 12 remote learning 31/1) - extra week of school at the end of year now changed to 16/12.

Schools open for vulnerable children and children of essential workers

I got my PCR back from hospital test site in 42 hours ymmv. 12days sounds like the lost it and pointless as beyond iso period anyway.

Just do a RAT unless travelling overseas, chemist warehouse in NSW restocked most stores on Wed and Coles has stock again but you have to ask and only 1 box per person.

I have no problem with the concept that if I want to travel I will pay for any testing and pay for RATs if I want to check I am not infected before visiting vulnerable others etc. I don’t expect to have them for free for my choices.

So why get tested at all - a really good question if you have no underlying conditions and asymptomatic - given 1 in 3 probably are positive, or recently recovered from a nye acquired infection. Yeah, some work testing excluded for high value essential individuals and those with risk /care situations. Even then - their odds are not good if they go shopping.

Spoiler alert: I am staying home, because my eyes focus with glasses in the morning is a little delayed - I wonder if that is a symptom. OTOH I feel unusually bright ,alert and well.

I reckon I was smart - I put all my effort into getting a booster ASAP. It seems ATAGI, for AZ people, willfully discounted UK numbers. This one size fits all group-think is dangerous. Or they decided let-it-rip was workable(or outside their ambit) - or rather nothing could prevent silly season mayhem. The UK pushed that button before 14 December and NSwan did the talk.

I have lots of wasted NSW text messages 'you are required to monitor for symptoms' because someone about the time I checked in, was about. Monitor what? I have a few distant friends now with the bug, and they are asymptomatic - even the 73yo with severe cardiac conditions. Nothing, nada. And they can't afford to treasure hunt RAT kits. There are no new TV commercials - IMHO now needed, telling people to stay at home/shop little as possible in the next 3 weeks. It would certainly save more lives than seatbelt or speeding ads on a thing called probability tables.

Probability will feed into nursing homes etc, so I sure hope Dept Health is on that ball, as omicron will find the weakest links.

As usual, we saw rules, measurements and measures changed to fit resources, shortages, nobody asking to see risk assessments, but we do know CHO's have been politically overridden before, even gagged. The RAT kit fiasco - market failure, not a single ACCC shaming?

The INFORMATION I want to see is how long does an omicron infection last for, by age, sex and prior vaccination type, possibly BMI in there too. What is the spreader protection curve for those that just had a booster?

Critical essential workers in Queensland who are deemed close contacts will be allowed to work

The change comes into effect immediately.

There are a couple of caveats, though.

  • You must be asymptomatic
  • You must work in a critical industry AND be classified as a critical essential worker by your employer
  • You're only released from quarantine to go to work (so you can't hit the shops, sorry)
  • You must be fully vaccinated and wear PPE at all times
  • You must travel to work in personal transport or transport organised by your employer (so no public transport)
So what counts as a critical industry? Here's what the Health Minister had to say:

  • health (private hospitals included)
  • emergency services
  • resource sector
  • power and utilities
  • agriculture and fisheries
  • production
  • freight and logistics
  • public transport
  • teachers
  • essential retail such as supermarkets
  • and stores in remote locations and communities
"Those businesses will have to submit to government the list of critical essential workers. It doesn't need an approval process and they do not need to wait until they've sent us that list to start operating," Yvette D'Ath says.

"We have empty shelves in supermarkets right now because of the number of people in the community who are positive, but importantly, how many people have to quarantine because they are a close contact."

NSW: Critical workers furloughed as close contacts can leave self-isolation to work

The change is being put in place to ease pressure on supply and distribution networks.

There are a couple of caveats, though.

  • It only applies to food logistics and manufacturing sectors
  • You'll need to be asymptomatic
  • Your employ must verify that your absence from the workplace poses a high risk of disruption to the delivery of critical services or activities and you are unable to work from home
"That change comes in effective immediately today," the Premier says.
"Those orders were signed off this morning and we believe that that will ease the pressure on supply and distribution networks, particularly for those essential areas across our state as we move through the next few weeks."
