Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

The spread and clusters developing and growing in Sydney are really interesting compared to Victoria....

Huge geographical spread of small clusters in NSW, while Vic had less clusters but much bigger.

Does anyone have the number of tests done yesterday in NSW and VIC?

I think the various sites only track test results issued per day, which is not the same thing as tests performed (done) per day.

You can see the test results issued per day on 14,935 Coronavirus Cases in Australia - COVID LIVE

Note that the test results issued on any one day can be a mix of test performed on the day prior as well as tests performed earlier. In Victoria lower priority tests can take a number of days after test sample being taken till the lab processing the sample to achieve a result.

I hope NSW is watching the Vic numbers not decreasing with harsh restrictions NSW have a chance to contain it still if they act now. Otherwise heaven help them. 250 is ridiculous. I am not the biggest AP fan in Queensland but she is at least right in her approach that she will protect Queensland from Covid

If Thai Rock Potts Point was caused by a diner, it seems excessive to have a 11 day period.....

Monitor symptoms if you attended second Thai Rock restaurant

Dr Chant said a staff member at the Thai Rock restaurant in Potts Point has now tested positive to COIVD-19.
"This follows a positive test from a person who dined at the restaurant on the 17th of July," she said.

Anyone who attended the Thai Rock restaurant in Potts Point for two hours or more between Wednesday July 15 and Saturday July 25 should be tested for COVID-19 and self-isolate for 14 days.

Anyone who went to the restaurant for a shorter time period should monitor themselves for symptoms and isolate and get tested if symptoms appear.

Thai Rock restaurant in Potts Point is now closed for cleaning.

NSW Health media release adds that there was a 2nd case of a staff member

In Adelaide Qantas isolated everyone with the baggage handlers - all 800 of them until the results were in. Back in early April. Stopped the spread.

Yes but that took till 12 April for all to be put into isolation = weeks (from date of infection of 18 March).

All 750 at the Colac Abattoir have been isolated within several days. So if you want to use the Baggage handlers as a model it would two further weeks to put the balance of the Abattoir works into isolation than what has happened.

The end effect is that the abattoir workers have actually been isolated as a group considerably quicker than the Qantas Baggage Handler Cluster.

Also just looking.

The Qantas spokesman said the union was "misrepresenting the situation". "If employees were not required to self-isolate by SA Health then they have continued to work as usual," the spokesman said. "They were reminded not to come to work if they were feeling unwell and to follow the advice of SA Health."

So from it would appear that many were not tested or isolated till much later. In Colac they sped up the process by testing everyone very early on and not just those identified by contact tracing, or showing symptoms (after 2 days when all were deemed lose contacts). SA did not extend close contacts to a wider basis till 12th April, weeks later.

The question here would seem actually to be the reverse, why did SA Health wait so long to either test the asymptomatic or change the definition of who were close contacts? (I am not being critical in a negative way , but action with the abattoir has been far quicker than with the baggage handler cluster and so that would have led to a worse result if the same process had of been followed in this situation).

Sydney today seems to be at where south eastern Melbourne (basically Melbourne south of the Yarra), except the City of Casey, was a few weeks ago. Even in yesterdays figures the portion of Melbourne south of the Yarra , added 94 (14 of those in Casey).

There seems to be thee distinct parts of Victoria - north/west Melbourne (inc. Mitchell shire) , south/east Melbourne, Regional Vic, plus the hotspots in Casy and Colac. With active cases of 3216, 634, 99, 157 and 47 respectively. Will see what today brings.

Baptcare Lalor have posted multiple Visitor Liaison Officers for their facility - on-site work. Not a job I'd be wanting to do!

These are through the State Government's Working for Victoria project and posted on Sidekicker. (I am not looking for work but was involved with helping a client set up their Working for Victoria workforce, so am still monitoring what is going up on the jobs board)

Because the initial baggage handler didn’t report symptoms but kept working for almost 10 days and it wasn’t until several became positive that this became known? And this was March remember and not July in full blown situation.

And my next door neighbour was one of the 800 stood down for iso then tested and her brother was a baggage handler who developed covid as did his friend. She told me everything that was happening and how no one could work. So I am going to dispute what the union said 😉

NSW Government has been very firm they won’t lock down like Melbourne. We will see...

Sydney today seems to be at where south eastern Melbourne (basically Melbourne south of the Yarra), except the City of Casey, was a few weeks ago.

We have lots of people flying in and out of Sydney (from Brissy) for work over the next few weeks.

I have a sinking feeling this will not be happening... mark this post :(

I quoted a Qantas spokesperson and not the union.

I was also going by what Spurrier (in the article I linked) said then. It was Spurrier who stated that on 12 th April,

"For this reason, we'll be requesting approximately 750 Qantas staff who have worked in those three areas since the 18th of March to self-isolate and be in quarantine immediately," Professor Spurrier said on Sunday (12th April).

She was referring to There are concerns for people who worked as airport duty managers, pilot and cabin crew managers and for people who used the airline's back-of-house areas at Adelaide Airport.

In any case it has only taken several days for all workers to be put into self-isolation in this cluster. So it has been dramatically quicker compared with the baggage handler cluster from first case till all workers placed in quarantine.

If you want to argue that all workers should have been declared close contacts more quickly than what occurred, then that is one argument but is not what SA Health did quickly with the baggage handler cluster. To argue that it should have been handled like the baggage handler cluster is a process that would actually have led to a worse outcome and not a better one.

I feel NSW is only going ok because it hasn’t got into an aged care facility to this point in the past month.

Hopefully NSW aged care staff has learned from the previous time...any symptoms, don’t work

Once it does it will explode like Vic/Melb

I think that’s been the real fire starter historically.

I just realised that on Friday the "Feast of the Sacrifice" is celebrated by those of the Islam faith. I hope the message around no visitors and gatherings has been well heeded, this is another major coming together of families, which has potential to further spread the virus.

More Darwin award applications.

I read elsewhere that apparently she was spoken to by police and found to have a medical certificate exemption from wearing a mask.

But her belligerent attitude towards staff (Bunnings and I think AusPos) was ridiculous. If she keeps it up I hope she’s get arrested for causing a nuisance or something like that

Hello SW / W Sydney.....

People like this just want attention.

The news cover it because it makes them money.

Posting links to it just fuels the fire - so why......? Your choice I suppose.

I was thinking more about NW Melbourne.

Maybe we should be thinking more about Sydney at this stage, because that is where it is smoldering, it will just take a spark.

I don’t know much about religion, is this a big event.

I think so, I used to have individuals reporting to me from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indonesia, and always plenty of well wishing around this time of year, as they would get together with their families. As an example, it's one of the two Muslim holidays that are set aside as a public holiday in Singapore (for reference the two Christian holidays are Christmas Day and Good Friday). So I think it's a fairly big deal. Wikipedia suggests that it " is the second of two Islamic holidays celebrated worldwide each year (the other being Eid al-Fitr), and considered the holier of the two. "
