Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

France has approved hydroxychloroquine as an approved treatment drug combined with an antibiotic where necessary. And have banned export in order to avoid stockpiling

Interesting.
Certainly not the usual requirement of medical trials etc

Agree. Hydroxychlooquine does have some serious side effects as well. In my opinion, It should be used as last ditch desparate measure not as a prophylcatic agent.
I think the recommended treatment course is only 10 days so far. Given how many scripts were dispensed for first timers from Dentists (WT?) and the like and in double the numbers that PBS prescribes for genuine cases, many are using it prophylactically. I know many suffer side effects like nausea. Hope thats the case here. People with an unknown heart issue can suffer serious issues. Other than a bitter taste and the profound (positive) effect it has on fatigue and joint pain, I havent had any side effects after 3.5 years. And yes, monitoring of blood and eyes.

@Pushka Plaquenil is manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis a French Company.Seeing the French Government has banned the export of the drug I assume that it is being manufactured in France.
It is quite likely they manufacture it elsewhere-hopefully so some supplies can get to Australia. They do have a manufacturing plant in brisbane but I doubt Plaquenil made there.

The generic brands almost certainly are manufactured in India and/or China. There is though a large manufacturer of generic drugs in Israel.Sanofi also have announced in February that due to the effects of drug supply by Covid they will also set up as a generic manufacturer in Europe.

Again there certainly are severe side effects from hydroxychloroquine though they can usually be looked for with annual eye exams and ECG and are virtually always reversible after cessation.A safer profile than other DMARDs such as methotrexate.

The vast majority of the trials with hydroxychloroquine are for the treatment of Covid 19.As far as I can tell only 2 looking at it for prevention and then as part of a larger study.

I was reading some articles from pharmac_ researchers this morning, and they were generally dismissive of hydroxychloroquine, with it being about as effective as the placebos in some Chinese testing.

Resdesivir (an anti viral) seeming offers a bit more hope.

Of course, the source was the internet, and we know how accurate that is.

If that's the case then next thing on eBay will be multiple bottles of the tablets up for sale and pharmacists being asked to accept returns!

I have found no published research on Plaquenil or other quinine derivatives as a Prophylactic. (please share if others have )
With o prophylactic alternatives , Quinine seems to me (and a few million others..try to buy some..) ) to be worth a punt.
Even a daily dose of quinine rich tonic water may make the difference between light and heavy infection, however it is all speculation
The alternative is to wait for infection , suffer with analgesic support , hope for adequate hospitalisation and then take whatever they offer…atm.. it will likely be Plaquenil…..

Clinical trials in process. I think a poster on AFF mentioned that this was happening in Australia too.

Cinchona bark is still readily available on ebay , many different species and one must question the provenance.
The major risk is that home made potions, ie cinchona tea, will contain an unmeasurable quinine concentration that could be extremely dangerous
I will not labour the point, but opine that the home brewing route is fraught with real danger.

Ruby continues to give.
There are 12 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Australia, taking the total to 299.

Seven of the new cases are linked to the Ruby Princess cruise ship. There is also a cluster in the Barossa Valley and schools have now been closed.

I didn’t go to the local Sunday morning farmers market but apparently nobody down there practiced distancing. Sadly, I have just recommended to our local member that the farmers markets be closed down due to stupidity.

I've been listening out for info on the current "recovered" number in regards to Australia -
NSW=4, VIC=191, QLD=8, SA=6, WA=28, ACT=2, TAS=5, NT=0 Total AUS=244. (Current figures as listed on John Hopkins stats page)
Does anyone know why the number of Vic recoveries is so much higher than other regions? ie 191
Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere, but I have been so curious.

Better coffee :)

I think @PineappleSkip may have just answered my question inadvertently on the general Coronavirus chitchat thread...

Also, I rarely hear about the recovery, probably only once a week. Isn't that an important statistic too?
Yes it is, but many places are not reporting recoveries. In Australia, Victoria is, and I think I read only one other state also is. Over time this will unnecessarily inflate active case numbers.

cheers skip

We aren't counting recoveries anymore. It has been six since the first people from Wuhan, back in February, were released. We are just counting on terms of deaths (0) and 7 in intensive care. The rest are at home or being cared for if home isn't in Adelaide.

Just checked my bottle of Plaquenil. Does not mention country of manufacture.

Been on Plaquenil for close to 20 years now! Just got to remember to take it with a full stomach.

Thanks for the insight @Pushka. Much appreciated.
