Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I’ve told some friends who have moved down to Sydney recently from Brisbane that they need to get their rego changed ASAP as NSW roads are for NSW drivers only.
I had a QLD vehicle transferred to NSW for a new driver (waiting for paperwork from leasing company to change plates) and within 3 days the car was spray painted at night with the towns postcode. Gotta love backward small towns that think their town is just for them.

What gets me is small town, so Im guessing the neighbours know who lives in the house. They might not have liked the idea of someone from QLD visiting but they should know their neighbour enough to not vandalise the car.

Not easy getting ex-QLD rego cars passed as roadworthy in NSW.

I had to transfer a 2 month old Passat from Qld to NSW... you’d think it was a commercial aircraft based on the checks they did.

Disappointingly, they failed to detect what a lemon it was. That’s another story though.

SMH.com.au reports:

Victoria to release new data about outbreaks, high-risk locations
By Craig Butt
Victoria's Health Department will release a new data dashboard today that provides more information on coronavirus cases in council areas, Health Minister Jenny Mikakos has announced.

Ms Mikakos said details around outbreaks and high-risk locations will be made available for the first time

“People will be able to see, in their local area, whether there has been an exposure to a known case in their community,” she said.

She said people would be able to see if a known case had visited a local supermarket, cafe or other location.

About time! NSW has been doing this since April, and so have the other states in as far as I can tell. The lack of information sharing in Vic has been bothering me for some time, I think people have a right to know if cases have been at a venue that they were at.

Some in Queensland government employ clearly think they are a separate country, their CHO just said " "She was always, of course, allowed back into Queensland. She's a Queensland citizen as are her parents. So she was always allowed back in,". I think Dr Young will find the girl and her parents are Queensland residents and Australian citizens.
And not stated by JY was that at present she is the only one with the power in QLD to approve a health exemption. The case of the young girl was knocked back twice so they would have had to pay for hotel quarantine. They had a letter from their surgeon stating hotel quarantine was inappropriate for a 2 year old having just had cardiac surgery.
So Channel 7 got involved and asked JY why is it so.She then approved the exemption. She is clearly not up to the job.

I must say Dr Young (Qld CHO) never seems as confident in her addresses to the media compared with Dr Kerry Chant (NSW CHO) or Dr Brett Sutton (Vic CHO). I have to please ignorance wrt knowing who the CHOs are for the other states and territories, they dont seem to get much airtime.

Being less than a week away from a small break, I was reassured this morning by GB and Dr Chant's practical approach that they do not intend to add restrictions to northern NSW in reaction to Queensland's rising cases.

Oh No!!

ABC News is reporting:

BREAKING: Security guard fined for breaching COVID-19 rules

A security guard who contracted COVID-19 has been fined twice by NSW police for failing to isolate after his coronavirus test.

The 22 year-old guard was tested after working at a Sydney quarantine hotel, where another guard had tested positive to COVID-19.

Police say the man failed to self-isolate after having his COVID test.

A public health alert has now been issued for Westfield Burwood and the nearby Service NSW centre, which the man visited after having his COVID test.

Lock this guy up - he clearly cant be trusted to do the right thing!

Edited to say SMH.com.au now reports:

"The man underwent a secondary test at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and about 8am on Saturday, August 22, was informed he had returned a positive test result for COVID-19. He was transferred to a NSW Health COVID-19 quarantine facility where he will stay for the remainder of his quarantine period," police said. "

116 for Victoria today (and 15 deaths). We are definitely headed in the right direction.

Another good indicator was that the positivity rate of 0.67 % is the lowest since 18 July.

As the daily volumes have been under 25K per day since 12 Aug, the positivity rate is probably now again a more accurate indicator that it was when it was fluctuating widely due in large part to the then huge testing volumes.

I'm not sure I would go as far as saying not 'up to the job' but there are heavy rumours swirling around up here amongst the medical community about her 'suitability' for the role at this stage of the pandemic....

Her approach is feeding AP's flopping about and SLAMMING things shut without proper scientific basis and care for some communites and there are murmurs that it may be less AP and more JY pulling the strings at the moment.... who knows but its getting a little weird....

Not sure if picked up thread

NSW has reported 3 cases today

Of the three new cases reported to 8pm last night:
  • two cases were acquired overseas and are in hotel quarantine
  • one case is a close contact of a previous case, being a healthcare worker from Liverpool Hospital
Another Phase 1 venue added
  • Auburn Ramadan pharmac_ from 1.30-2.30pm on Wednesday 19 August
24 total community transmission. Unable to access ageing data.

Dan trying to get the State of Emergency extended by a further 12 months through Parliament and has said without the extension it would be unlikely that the Chief Health Officer would recommend easing restrictions.

What exactly would this mean for people?

Well based on what the article jase05 posted very little. It just means that the CHO actually has teeth so that say if another outbreak pops up in 3 months, or 9 months, or whenever that he can act immediately if required, rather than requiring another State of Emergency to be declared.

I say very little because if the case rate drops to 0 for any length of time all the state restrictions would be wound back just leaving the Federal restrictions on borders and international travel. That plus any other restrictions that other states may still have that would impact say interstate travel, freight etc.

Here's a "tongue in cheek" comment on border closures.

The Rural City of Mildura, home to 55,000 Victorians, has not had a formal border closure (although there have been lockdowns obviously restricting movement within Victoria to one of several reasons). It's total cases, during the pandemic, is 6. That's a rate of 11 per 100,000 population. NT, the best performing locked down state or territory has a rate of 13.4 for their 240,000 or so territorians. Maybe we should be following Mildura's lead, rather than the NT.

Less tongue in cheek, before looking at NT as a model, need to take into account their relative isolation from the rest of Australia, like Mildura's relative isolation from the rest of Victoria (even though only 6 hrs drive from the hotspots). That's probably significant.
NT's cases nearly all related to the early repatriation flights from Wuhan & elsewhere being taken to Darwin & then put into a 'high security' workers camp for mandatory 2 week quarantine with ADEQUATE health staff on site & Australia's media filming multi-times a day.

If you deduct those CV cases then NT looks excellent - if not for an Australian Federal Police senior person....

SA loves our CPHO Dr Nicola Spurrier - she's calm considered and well spoken (we named a coughtail after her)
