Regional Victoria slowly edging down the total active cases - why is Stage 3 working in Regional Vic, but didn’t really work in Melbourne - could see actuality of tougher restrictions?? less movement generally?? masks??

"There are 166 cases in regional local government areas under stage three, so those numbers continue to fall, which is very good
news," Mr Andrews said.

The breakdown in the larger regional centres are: Greater Geelong, 55 active cases, (three new cases). Greater Bendigo has 10 active cases (no new cases), and Ballarat has six active cases (no new cases).

There have been seven new cases in New South Wales

Seven new cases of coronavirus have been reported in NSW in the last 24 hours.

NSW Health says five of those diagnoses are part of a CBD cluster linked to the City Tattersalls Club, which has now grown to 28 cases.

One case is a traveller in hotel quarantine, and one other case is under investigation.

A student from St Paul’s school at Greystanes is among today’s new cases. The school will be closed tomorrow.

The more I think about it, the new hotspot definition should have a reference to movement within zone (eg Melbourne) and movement between zones (eg Melbourne to Regional Vic)....high movement areas should have a lower threshold per population and low movement area should have a higher threshold.

But I doubt this will eventuate.....

NSW‘s total community transmission (unknown source) since before Crossroads remains steady at 30 - 14 in the last 14 days, 5 in the 15-28 day prior period, 11 older than 28 days (and I’d suggest will remain unresolved).

On our trip to outback QLD the further you got from Brisbane the better the compliance was with social distancing. And they hadn't even had a case of Covid 19.
Maybe why regional areas in Victoria are doing better.

True, in my experience as well. When Colac had the abattoir outbreak, it was reported, that despite the absence of lockdown measures at the time (they were still in Stage 2) the town basically went into de facto Stage 3, with streets emptying out and people staying at home.

Also I understand in some places, contract tracing was being done locally. I read a report that once Bendigo Health took over contact tracing from DHHS for Bendigo, it was better (local knowledge helps) and quicker.

Generally speaking, a much stronger sense of community outside the metropolitan areas (perhaps with some very rare exceptions in some suburbs).

From the list above and previous exposure sites I'd argue that we should consider closing the following for a fortnight:
  • Gaming areas of licensed premises
  • Indoor Gyms and fitness centres
  • Churches
Many of the other exposures are of a very short nature - less than 30 minutes. I would argue that it is long format activities with "questionable" social distancing that are causing the spread in NSW.

Congratulations on joining Lynda2475’s line of argument.

Yes churches (in particular funerals) and gyms have been apparent sites of infection, but so has restaurants.

The pub/pokies clubs have cheaper/subsidised food, hence more patron along with community settings. I’ve not recalled an actual gaming venue as a site of transmission, only been a Phase 1 venue, monitor for symptoms.

I do wonder whether the recent gym instance is because of a failure of the marshall system or just because it was an apparent staff member infected. If the latter then an instance similar to both Thai Rock (and apparently the funeral cluster as well).

Gym staff - particularly instructors - are like a younger, fitter version of aged care workers in that they work lots of places quite often. They also interact with a lot of patrons across their days - and people forget things such as no handshakes or fist pumps.

While I agree restaurants are a source of infection, the economic impact of closure would be significant. Perhaps more requirement for strict time limits on duration for patrons (remember the Harpoon Harry/Hotel Harry case where they were in the venue for hours?!).

I'd suggest masks and less population density (possibly in both senses of the word)

Plus:
- less people and less mixing. In GMMA many people were moving around till level 4 and 5km came in. Reducing and limit mixing and you limit transmission
- less community spread early on
- larger dwellings
- many working outdoors or living on farms

You will note that abattoirs, poultry processing etc in regional centres were sites of large outbreaks = sites of many people mixing in close proximity

Yes you would think that it would be a simple matter to have local controls in some areas. This does not mean lockdown, but limiting certain activities and gathering sizes in particular locations.

Another evening, another NSW Health public health alert

Of interest, a bus appears to be considered a site of transmission, even though one was wearing a mask

Passengers on the X39 bus that left Pitt Street opposite Australia Square at 6.08pm on 20 August and arrived at Clovelly Rd, Carrington Road at Randwick at 6.40pm are considered close contacts of a case.

They should immediately isolate for 14 days since they were on that bus (until midnight on 3 September) and be tested for COVID-19 regardless of symptoms.

A previously reported case associated with the August CBD cluster took this bus. The person reported wearing a mask on the bus. A second passenger was confirmed as having COVID on Friday.

Both cases live and work in the same areas and disembarked at the same spot. NSW Health is investigating the source of the second person’s infection.

Other locations either upgraded to Phase 2 without explanation and Phase 1 added, please read

That is what I actually meant. Plus the other meaning ;)
