Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Yes back in June when it was taking off I was asking why were these local hotspot measures not being brought in. They were stated back at the start to be part of the plan, but when it was evident that there was a case surge on, they were brought in too slowly.

The second wave in NZ had demonstrated that rapid and early hotspot management can be used to stop the growth of of Covid 19. Though even NZ is most likely considering whether they need something stricter to fully eliminate it a second time.

So for myself, a key lesson for all is that if a region ever experiences a new outbreak is to jump on it quickly with appropriate hotspot controls. The quicker those controls are, the less harsh they will need to be.
So to paraphrase using the old (bad) joke:

B A N G!

Stop or I'll shoot!

Possibly, but it seems only to have been an issue in Victoria. So why is that? I wonder if the uniforms of ADF and Police and those of dedicated health personnel made people think about the situation and not themselves so much.

On the other hand, now that people are paying for it, I'd expect reasonable food.
It can be due to the origins of the flights into Melb. Different cities have generally been having different points of origins (until Melb shut down incoming fllights).

But equally other Covid measures have reduced the number of flu deaths.

The statement of the Covid deaths is also being used by the Conspiraists to claim that Covid is overblown and they are faking deaths in order to control us.

As I understand (and hopefully a Medico might weigh in) it's because no-one dies of Covid - you die from pneumonia, liver failure, heart attack etc, which for reporting purpose is then included as a Covid death (no different to how it is for the flu during typical flu seasons).

If you're released from hospital after recovering and then get hit by an ambulance and killed instantly I doubt you will contribute to the Covid stats.
Just like with the bushfires when someone who had finished his shift, gone home, showered & changed, picked up a friend and was driving to the next town to go for dinner - got killed by a drunk driver. Recorded as 'bushfire related death'.

Yes that is one way of putting it. In many things in life it is normally data first, act second. With CV19 though waiting too long for the data to be good can be punitive and you can end up chasing your tail.

Generalising I prefer that they act quickly, and then maybe realise that they were a bit too strict and can relax things.. ...rather than wait till they have all the details, only to find that things have escalated so that the problem they could have controlled more easily, is now an even bigger problem requiring even more strict measures.

Having said that I believe that appropriate local early measures can be very much be part of acting early enough so that more widespread measures are not required.

Qld 2 new cases - Ipswich Hospital and Redbank Plains (latter apparently already in quarantine (maybe meaning isolation))

Vic 70 new cases and 5 deaths

@NSWHealth
Thirteen new cases of #COVID19 were diagnosed in the 24 hours to 8pm last night, bringing the total number of cases in NSW to 3,874. Of the 13 new cases:
•Two are returned travellers in hotel quarantine
•Eleven are locally acquired and linked to a known case or cluster

Perhaps what Vic might release on Sunday...

Interesting how some places have dealt with hospitality.

On Hawaii (the Big Island) you are required to wear a face mask at all times inside a bar, cafe, restaurant (including ordering a drink at the bar). Only when you take a drink/eat your meal are you permitted to have your nose & mouth uncovered. Not sure whether this is County mandated or business mandated but reports are of 100% compliance. No mask no food/drink is the alternative.

Has anyone seen a break-up of where the hotel quarantine cases came/travelled from?

From a pro-active viewpoint, if the +ve cases come predominantly from one airline or country/countries then additional measures could/should be adopted to strengthen the preventative transmission measures.

For international returnees to NSW this may assist (though many flights are listed from probably a transit airport and so the actual country of origin is not specified).:

You have to go to five jurisdictions. It isn’t like NZ where you can find it in one place.

lovetravellingoz beat me to posting NSW recent flight list link

edit to add WA flights link

That's certainly been the case in SFO, PSP and Lake Tahoe.

No new cases in the rest of the country.

Qld updated its contact tracing locations at 5:57pm today. They used a “new” symbol to add Fig Tree Pocket Early Childhood Centre. Hopefully that’s the only addition.

Its sad that things have reached this point:

Victorian doctors pen desperate letter to Dan Andrews about controversial State of Emergency Bill (The Oz, paywalled ... google the headline if you'd like the whole article)

Senior doctors across Melbourne are urging politicians not to support a state of emergency extension, saying the move threatens to “destroy” the health and wellbeing of fed-up Victorians.

In a letter to Premier Daniel Andrews, seen by NCA NewsWire, 13 medical practitioners outlined their concerns about the State Government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

They say it is “vital” stage four restrictions are lifted on September 13, believe “an alternative medical response” is required and highlight key data they think is being “excluded”.

While I'm sure opinions will differ among the medical community, the letter sets out some interesting figures:

“We are told that since March 2020, 565 Victorian patients have died either with or from the virus (31st August numbers). This compares with annual Victorian deaths of approximately 10,000 patients with cardiovascular disease and 11,000 with cancer.

“Accordingly, the COVID-19 deaths are a relatively small proportion of the 114 deaths per day that are normally seen in Victoria. In comparison, since the start of March COVID-19 has been associated with 3 of the 114 deaths per day.

“Most of the 565 deaths have occurred in nursing homes which according to doctors currently working in this environment have described causal factors related not only to the virus but to other care related issues, including isolation, loneliness, and related diminished nutritional intake.”
...
Well-known Royal Melbourne Hospital transplant surgeon Dr Bob Millar, Monash Hospital orthopaedic surgeon Dr Jon Bare and Nossell Institute for Global Health public health physician Nathan Grills were among the contributors.

Professors John Murtagh, Haydn Walters and Kuruvilla George, Dr Peter Denton, Dr William Edwards, Dr Andrew Taylor, Dr Michael Knight, Dr John Mathai and Dr Eamonn Mathieson also had their say.

I must say the phenomenon of having a prolonged State of Emergency in various states is very troubling. Yes, I know its largely so health authorities can enact the measures for the containment of COVID, and the meaning of SoE is different in the various states. Premier Andrews was after an extension for a full year. Utterly ridiculous. It seems he'll have to make do with 6 months with the Greens giving him the votes to get that. Tasmania hasn't had community transmission in over 3 months, but the Police Commissioner has secured an extension of the SoE for another two months (Parliamentary approval not needed, which is farcical). The reason? Premier Peter Gutwein saying the island state was in a fortunate position “but things can change in a heartbeat”. Question. When is that condition not present?

When governments get the taste of greater-controlling powers, its very hard for them to give them up.

Good point. After reflection I am sure Dear Leader will close the DPRT permanently.

Entirely agree, but he is not saying how dangerous they are. They not just crackpots, they are worse.
My MIL used to say that sometimes even crackpots and idiots made sense. When I hear Trump I am reminded of that.
I think once the economic impacts and the hidden impact of all the non covid medical issues come to the fore, which they are about to do, that there will be compelling move to seriously think where Australia is heading. For a start, lets start acting like Australians again.
