Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Simple NSW Health just stops reporting the numbers.
Eventually the breathless statistics will have to pass - the media must be getting bored by now

I am not inclined to deny the seriousness of covid at all, just the opposite and quite wary of it.

However, just imagine a world where all things being equal we had a press conference everyday from every premier with the road toll, flu deaths (in a normal year), suicides, fatal heart attacks, various under the cancer umbrella, overdoses, (all of which have higher numbers of funerals than Covid)

It will be interesting to see how summer goes. People are going to switch off at some point just for their mental health.

I am not inclined to deny the seriousness of covid either but what if Dr Young announced 'NSW roads are very dangerous. The border will be closed to NSW drivers until we have 28 days of no fatal accidents on NSW roads.'

The real hypocrisy with Dr Young is that she is setting a higher bar for the neighbouring states than Queensland currently meets and hasn't met for a while

And letting on the 400 AFL types in where they aren't even locked in their rooms for quarantine.... Most from Melbourne.

Yet people from Northern NSW regions where there has been no Covid for months are shut out

They aren’t in their rooms they are in the pool or bar, tab is on Anna’s election campaign mate.

The West Australian is reporting that WA will not be subject to a push to open borders....and will be left to make their own decisions...

Just got a prompt on my phone the Vic Covid Emergency Advice has been updated as of 11:53 (?) this morning. I scanned through it but can't see what the "new" bit is?

I have to say that news footage tonight of the poolside relaxation in the AFL quarantine was not a good look. You’d want to hope that none of those travellers have Covid as there didn’t look to be much social distancing going on.
Agree the optics are infuriating. The AFL had better watch out as well that they don’t get caught up in the politics.

The WA premier is a bit of a nutbag who needs to get re-elected shortly.

Eventually If the eastern states hammer something out and it works and we pull together as a country, the WA people will rise up against him - there are simply too many families devastatingly split by these political border wars.

He will be forced to do something more sensible and actually following his CHO (or any!...) medical advice.

And remember the eastern states quite literally feed WA, VIC especially is a HUGE net exporter of pretty much everything to WA and a lot of family links there too... the pressure will start building there eventually.... Just like it has up and down the east coast.

The media over there will slowly turn on him too - remember who pays their bills and how they make there money - big hint: NOT the WA government or their WA domestic economy...

I agree with what you are saying in your post, but actually, at the moment, the eastern states are feeding off WA, or more exactly, the WA mining industry. The huge tax payments paid by the iron ore miners is going a long way to keeping the federal treasury afloat, and enabling the welfare to keep flowing. Australia in general should be sighing with relief at the moment for its mining industry (including the coal miners) :) .

Sure thing, as per normal - but you can transfer the money you owe electronically.

You can’t electronically ‘beam’ over food, grocery items, household supplies and families who haven’t seen each other and won’t - according to the WA premier for minimum of a year...

I'm not sure if this is new evidence to the 'hotel quarantine inquiry', but is nevertheless worth highlighting to show a significant component of the creation of the current crisis in Victoria (knocking-on to other states):

Hotel quarantine inquiry: Unified Security says it doesn't know why it secured $44m deal

The security company paid $44 million to guard Victoria’s quarantine hotels says it does not know why it scored the lion’s share of the work as part of the botched scheme.

Unified Security had just 89 permanent staff in March but ended up employing 1759 people, almost all through subcontractors.

It won the majority of the security work, despite not being on the state government’s preferred supplier list.

The bureaucrat who first approached Unified, Katrina Currie, revealed in emails one consideration was that Unified was indigenous-owned, making it suitable under the Andrews government’s inclusion policies.
...
UNIFIED was initially hired on March 28 to provide 40 guards, but had to deliver 200 guards by 5am the next day;

59 deaths in Victoria but 50 of those were a backlog from July and August that are being included in today’s data

Are we at the stage where likely older folk have Covid but dont die from it but from other morbidities so it now gets registered as a Covid death? And I am also wondering how they suddenly determine someone has covid who died weeks ago.

I need to stop reading the media when the deaths today get reported like this:

DEATH TOLL SURGES

Victoria has recorded 81 new cases and 59 deaths – although a number of those deaths were not in the past 24 hours. A number? Try 50. Not my bolding.

If the person has covid, and they pass away then regardless of any other complication or contributing factor yes they are recorded in the 'scoreboard'.

They are tested before they travel. If anyone returns a positive result (no one has) they are not permitted to travel. So all the pics are of people who have been tested. Normal quarantine has people tested after they travel.

They are isolated as a group transition quarantine. If one of that group now returns a positive test, then all of them will be quarantined for longer in that transition bubble for longer. If no one tests positive then they all get transferred to the other existing quarantine bubbles subject to ongoing daily health monitoring and ongoing CV19 testing. They are not free to mingle with the general public either now or later.

With the AFL bubble it is effectively an ongoing quarantine till they leave the bubble, and for some who started their interstate bubble in July (actual AFL bubbles started much earlier ) this will adds up to 3 or 4 months in total for interstate bubbles, and another month or two for total living in quaratine/isolation. That is a longtime to live in quarantine/isolation, even if the arrangements are different.
