Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

They could just contract Qantas to fly them, dig some planes out of the desert.... an A330 lightly loaded could do the job to most places with a stop over or two.

Now that ACT, NT and SA are in a travel bubble, maybe TAS would like to join us?

Believe me, many Tasmanians would like to join, but our wretched CHO, who the Premier won't go against, won't have it (we can travel out, but residents have 2 weeks at home when they come back; non residents in a hotel). ACT and SA have 'porous borders' with NSW and Victoria' would you believe . And, like I've noted before, the CHO refers to the fact that he's seen 'people are frightened' on social media and talkback.

To adapt a well-known (mis) quote: "We had to destroy the state in order to save it"

Mornington Peninsula cafe owner and single mother-of-three Michelle Loielo, who filed the suit, has accused the curfew of violating her rights to freedom, liberty and security.

"Since the implementation of the curfew I would describe the home environment for my children and I as absolutely suffocating," she said in an affidavit filed with the court.

"Looking after the mental and emotional wellbeing of my children, coupled with the pressure of trying to keep my business afloat, has taken a significant toll on my health.

"The social isolation from my family and friends has been unbearable."

So what she's really aggrieved about is the lockdown, not the curfew. She can't visit her family and friends, irrespective whether a curfew was enacted or not. I guess taking legal action will go some way to relieving the stress of the situation and give something to focus on.

I have been wondering at the tenacity of sharing of opinions of some, quite predictable too.

Collectively, what do we hope to achieve here, apart from a bit of friendly banter and venting?

Are we expecting any Premier/PM to be taking note of the brilliant minds on AFF? 😀

A bit more from the Victorian inquiry. I'm afraid Premier Andrews isn't being shown in a very good light (there's a word for it :(). From the ABC:

Victoria was offered ADF support in early days of hotel quarantine program, inquiry told
The Prime Minister wrote to the Victorian Premier three times in July, offering further Australian Defence Force personnel for the state's pandemic response, according to new evidence presented to the inquiry.

The federal solicitor-general's "voluntary" evidence laid out over 140 pages of key correspondence between the Commonwealth, the Victorian Government and key bureaucrats over the offer of ADF troops.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has continually denied there was an explicit offer of ADF support from the Commonwealth to help run the state's hotel quarantine program.

In August, the Premier told a Public Accounts and Estimates Committee hearing that claims ADF personnel were offered was wrong.

"[It's] fundamentally incorrect to assert that there were hundreds of ADF staff on offer and somehow, someone said no," he said.

But in the evidence provided to the inquiry, the secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Phil Gaetjens, sent an email to the secretary of the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet, Mr Chris Eccles AO, on April 8 offering Commonwealth support.

"On the question of assistance with security, I am advised the only deal with NSW was in-kind provision of ADF personnel," Mr Gaetjens wrote.

"I am sure the Commonwealth would be willing to assist Victoria if you wanted to reconsider your operating model."
On the same day, Mr Eccles responded: "Thanks Phil."

It was not until June 24 that the top Victorian public servant wrote to his federal counterpart that Victoria would need ADF support.

But I guess people will still 'stand by Dan' and his COVID policies in spite of the fact that he's been caught out in a barefaced untruth.

But I guess people will still 'stand by Dan' and his COVID policies in spite of the fact that he's been caught out in a barefaced untruth.

There are two issues at play. One standing by him and his government to get Victoria out of the mess and then dealing with the fact that he and his government created the mess in the first place. One can "stand by him" the former and vehemently oppose him in the latter. At the moment, the option is Dan or some relatively unknown other ALP politician. Most would choose the known quantity to someone else right now, until the ship is righted.

In 2022 the people will have the chance to voice their opinion, and probably well before then the ALP will have the chance to remove him (or he will resign) such that he is held accountable for the stuff-ups.

The other trouble is I don't think anyone is yet convinced the outcome would have been any different with O'Brien in charge.

Don't know him, so can't say. But I wonder if a government of his would have recruited hotel quarantine security team leaders from other non-health departments and made them undergo induction in 'diversity' but nothing on anti-virus hygiene and biosecurity - just walk into the job. Small event in the overall stuff-up, but seems to have been a theme.

Now all this wouldn't be such a thing for me, except its not only affected my many friends and family members in Melbourne, but the entire state of Tasmania whose ultra conservative CHO is paranoid about Victorian 'leakage' and also the entire national economy and growth out to recovery. To see and hear Premier Andrews speaking such barefaced BS is galling.

Hopefully the ADF person is stood down

Very hard to do. Easier to send them back to their base, get their CO, XO and most frighteningly of all RSM (or service equivalent), to 'discuss' the problem with them*, fine them and give them rubbish work until they resign.

*Said discussion may or may not involve words not suitable for use in public and will undoubtedly question their parentage and ability to function in the real world. The tone will usually be contemptuous and the volume loud.

Although, if it's quiet, be afraid, very afraid.

But now, the Victorian Premier might not have a choice: documents were filed in Victoria's Supreme Court this afternoon by Marcus Clarke QC to have the curfew removed.

"The social isolation from my family and friends has been unbearable."

Ms Loielo has asked the Supreme Court to either rule the curfew unlawful, or quash the Stay At Home Directions that stipulate it.

The court documents argue Victoria's deputy public health commander Michelle Giles "failed to give any real independent consideration to whether it was appropriate to make the curfew", AAP reports.

They also claim the curfew direction is invalid on grounds of irrationality and illogicality and that the curfew is not reasonably proportionate nor based on relevant and reliable evidence in line with public health laws.

You may or may not be aware of it, but Michelle Loielo, a Liberal Party Member, is seeking preselection for the next election. I will let you be the judge of whether this is really because of what is stated above just or whether it is more aimed at publicity and politics to achieve other goals.

And this is why I suggested in another thread? That come what may, elections need to be postponed during a pandemic.

A single mother of three, struggling Cafe owner during a pandemic has the time and resources to brief a QC for a supreme court challenge just because of her emotional well being not being able to communicate with friends and relatives which is likely to end in 2 weeks time.

Anyone believe in father Xmas or the Easter bunny???

Another where I could not decide between LOLZ and agree. I will never forget the contempt on the WOD’s voice as uniform was inspected at officer training and he asked if I had decided to wear my ‘gardening pumps to his parade ground’. My offence? I had a single blade of grass wet with dew on the heel of my shoe after marching across grass to enter the parade ground. Punishment was a week of spit polish inspection 3/day!

As always - a little more to the story than initially reported... Marcus Clarke QC is allegedly advising the Vic Liberal Party, and Ms Loielo is allegedly running for Liberal Party pre-selection.

If I was running for MP I'm not sure I'd be taking this avenue.

(Edited: oh, I see there were later posts to the one I responded to which cover my comments)
