Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

This is hilarious thanks for the Monday AM laugh! :) A Peta Crudlin special investigation on the lowest rating news outlet in the whole country. Ooooooo. I just wonder what Murdoch’s, sorry Crudlins conclusion was. Couldn’t possibly hazard a guess...

Instead of attacking and disrespecting the person, why not address the issues she raised? It was ONLY through Credlin's earlier questioning of Premier Andrews that the phone records were called by the inquiry, and the inquiry extended - this led to the Secretary of the Premier's Dept resigning and Professor Sutton being caught in some questionable evidence. Not bad for someone you disrespect so much; all the other 'journalists' missed this aspect.

The hotel quarantine bungle cost hundreds of people their lives. Think about that when you mock the journalists who are trying for all the relevant facts to come out so it hopefully never happens again.

Vic Premier made about 120 consecutive daily press conferences. Then took a day off I heard.

Jasmines Restaurant in Liverpool NSW being called out by NSW CHO after positive cases were there and they didn't have a comprehensive contact list of patrons.

Peta Credlin is probably one of the better reporters on Australian TV she just happens to work with Skynews who doesn't help her credibility., I think she is equal to Jana Wendt.

The Victorian government rang their own mates to organize the hotel security and then the cheese holes unfortunately lined up.

As New Zealand found out you need to keep watching the virus and do random testing of people who come into contact with people arriving from overseas, whether they be airline workers, port workers or hotel staff.

I heard NZ is now more regular testing of that cohort, either 7 days or 14 days depending on your category, rather than at random

In federally regulated aged care facilities where it has been (barely) reported that PPE was denied to the workers. Basically a "how to guide" to increase transmission rates and subsequent deaths.

It also highlights the absolute failure of using private enterprise. Totally unaccountable and able to walk away with the money and no repercussions.

It is excellent that this inquiry has started to focus on some of the important questions but I fear that it wont ask questions about FEDGOV or private enterprise failures.

I wonder if Peta Credlin will ask those questions? Or, could she possible be biased and only want to hurl abuse at the VIC government? A real journalist would ask the hard questions of all applicable parties, not just those they want to denigrate?

We've been through this a number of times. The health aspects during the pandemic is the responsibility of the states but I've no doubt the federal regulatory aspects were wanting - but see below.

The Victorian Government gave the Victorian inquiry its terms of reference. The FEDGOV has set up a Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety - much more powerful than the Vic Inquiry. The Royal Commission has been specifically tasked with investigating the aged care sector response etc to the pandemic. So I'd stay tuned.

Credlin in the past has excoriated the federal LNP government. But I suspect you don't watch/read her much :)

Who is responsible for aged care homes?
Who funds and runs aged care facilities? How have they become the epicentre of this crisis? And what is the best way to fix it?
By Michael Bachelard
JULY 30, 2020

The vast majority of nursing homes in Australia are privately owned. Private nursing homes can be run for profit or not for profit. For-profit homes are owned by everything from private family companies to listed entities such as Japara and Estia to large international conglomerates such as Bupa. The not-for-profits are usually run by church-based charities such as Anglicare, Uniting Care or, in the case of St Basil's in Fawkner, the Greek Archdiocese of Australia.

The private entities own the land and buildings, employ staff, set budgets and do the marketing. They are governed by the Commonwealth Aged Care Act and are accredited, regulated and inspected by the Commonwealth's mega-agency the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, which also deals with complaints against them.

A much smaller number of nursing homes remain in public ownership by the states. Victoria has the most publicly run aged care homes. Out of about 50,000 beds in Victoria, 5400 are in the public system, largely in regional areas. The federal regulator still accredits and oversees these facilities.

Note from the Lancet article: Victorian State-run aged care—which operates under the Safe Patient Care Act 2015, which enshrines in law minimum numbers of nurses and midwives to care for patients—has recorded very few COVID-19 cases and no deaths. Private facilities have no such quotas.

The Victorian Aged Care Response Centre's Chief Officer is a Federal Employee. It was originally Joe Buffone, but he was later swapped with another Federal Staffer.

In federally regulated aged care facilities where it has been (barely) reported that PPE was denied to the workers. Basically a "how to guide" to increase transmission rates and subsequent deaths.
Again the health aspects of the care in Aged care facilities are the reponsibity of the States.Go and read the 2 Inquiries into Newmarch House in NSW.The response to Covid was led by the Nepean Health District Public Health Unit- ie the NSW Healh Department.Supply of PPE can come from either the State or commonwealth stockpiles.
And the then Deputy Victorian CHO said that victorian Health Authorities had learnt the lessons from the Newmarch outbreak in NSW and they were prepared to deal with cases in Aged Care Facilities.

"Victoria's Deputy Chief Health Officer Annaliese van Diemen said much had been learnt from watching the deadly outbreak at Newmarch House unfold.

"In Victoria, we consider a single case in a nursing home an outbreak," Dr van Diemen said. "We decided quite early on we didn't want to wait for a second case."

Australian states outside of Victoria wait for at least two COVID-19 cases to emerge in aged care homes before declaring it an outbreak and rolling out contract tracing and strict quarantine measures."

So now with 97% of cases and 97% of deaths in aged care facilities occurring in Victorian facilities once again it appears contact tracing and quarantine were found wanting.

It also highlights the absolute failure of using private enterprise. Totally unaccountable and able to walk away with the money and no repercussions.

It is excellent that this inquiry has started to focus on some of the important questions but I fear that it wont ask questions about FEDGOV or private enterprise failures.
The Royal Commission was set up to inquire into the running and regulation of Aged Care Facilities and then decided to include Covid response afterwards and interviewed known critics of Aged care.Undoubtedly there are major problems but this government plus the government from 2007-2013 both came up against a major problem when considering reform.Cost and where to make the cuts. The number of elderly people has skyrocketed and the working aged numbers have fallen as a percentage of the population.

When I was young we didn't get any subsidy for child care but Aged care Facilities were well run. Both those things have reversed since.

I note the articles quoted from the Lancet. They were not written by a Health Care worker.Sophie Cousins is a well known journalist contributing to the Guardian,New York times and the Atlantic.Maybe just a tad biased?

I wonder if Peta Credlin will ask those questions? Or, could she possible be biased and only want to hurl abuse at the VIC government? A real journalist would ask the hard questions of all applicable parties, not just those they want to denigrate?
My goodness she has extensively investigated the records of the Coates Inquiry from a legal perspective and you expect her to investigate Aged Care as well. The question should be why all those real Investigative journalists have not asked those questions before or since.
