Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

I think previously it was noted that Qld didn’t / couldn’t have hot hotels.
“Couldn’t” is a policy decision of the Queensland State Government. Other states successfully run hot hotels.

If Queensland cuts their quota the burden is largely transferred to the NSW Government yet again.

You may recall that Dr Stephen Miles ripped up the quarantine invoice from NSW so I expect willingness from the NSW Government will be low.

In the meantime we need to consider deployment of a field hospital to PNG to remove some of the medivac demand. I think only a handful of staff have gone up but no AUSMAT team.

I got the impression that it was only the unwell ones that were there and they seem to be having many positives a week whereas other states were in single numbers. We don't find out how sick people are with it and I'd suggest PNG people may be quite unwell? I don't know, just surmising. And Qld has more than any other state, confirming AP's comment that the percentage of positives amongst travellers is higher there. I think PNG has somewhat spooked them. Currently 71 active cases.
I think both NT and Queensland put all cases in hospital. If you have a look at Covid live the number of active cases for those two always match the number in hospital.

My understanding is that all in Qld that their practice for cases (ie positives) is that they are all (ie not just the unwell) moved to hospitals and they do this rather than use "hot" Hotels or medical-hotels (ie insert name used in each state).

If 60 cases can overwhelm the Queensland Health system, god help them if they had a full scale outbreak.
Unfortunately that's a grim reality - Australian hospital system is not fit for COVID challenges and will collapse dramatically in case of substantial local transmission. Remember how much healthcare workers got infected when VIC peaked at 600-700 daily cases? There was no hope - only stage 4 could help.
Now in WA hospitals overwhelmed even with ZERO covid cases, just regular life liming along...
Every state should have by now built specialized fit for infection hospitals like China and Russia did building makeshift overflow hospitals.
And train medical staff in big numbers preparing for future resume of international travel post vaccination campaign complete. We can not stay closed forever.

We can not stay closed forever.

No one in the government has quite got it through their heads that even with everyone vaccinated there is going to mutation after mutation after mutation which will probably render the vaccine available at the time less effective every time. The won’t be able to develop boosters fast enough.

So what now... random border closures and restrictions for how many years?

The QLD police commissioner is currently saying at the presser:

There was no 25 person party. The infected person was with five others who all had the right to be there. I.e. they were house mates of the infected person.

One new case in QLD, a brother (?) of an infected person, and is potentially the missing link.

It was announced yesterday that 25 persons at the party had been ordered to isolate so who is lying?
Sounds a bit like Pizzagate

They are currently saying that info was from the person himself. They are not being clear on whether he was lying, or the investigators misinterpreted what was said.

Yet the individual has been aggressively attacked because of it. I don’t recommend reading social media pages, but it makes the comments on this site look very tame. Incredible that, a year in, we still don’t care about the “virus” and it’s impact on individuals, we’re only interested in social controls and border closures.

Couldn't may also mean that no hotel wanted to sign up. Also there are two or three international airports in Qld.

The reports are the second case diagnosed in the last few days in QLD is the brother of the first case diagnosed this week.So even more reason he should have been isolating and not traipsing around BNE since his brother's diagnosis.

As to how the 25 at a party came about it looks like @jakeseven7 was right about QLD's 3 contact tracers.

It was Qld Health who announced the party of 25. Hence the urgency and why other states reacted.

The pizza guy in SA is now seemingly going to seek defamation action against the Govt but SA Health is ignoring his requests for his files. His visa apparently expired back in December. He wants to stay here. But says he is frightened. 🤷‍♀️

So who made the mistake about the 25 people at the party?

As you say @Pushka, states seem to have reacted based on the possibility of 25 positive (or soon to be positive) people roaming about greater Brisbane (at least). I am glad that has turned out to not be the case, but as we have often said before, the damage is now done.

ABC Blog: Hey there Maths. That's a question for Queensland Health, I'm afraid. Qld Health Minister Yvette D'Ath said that was the information they put out based on what they knew at the time. "This is the information that they [Health officials] believe that he had provided them at the time and they have acted on it," she said at the recent update.

I’m now confused with the pizza guy - did he lie or not?

Ein confusen too. I’d say it will eventually be concluded as ‘miscommunication due to language barrier’ - that may seem to placate most. He is a Spanish National so well, convenient.

This is starting to smell like a big game of ‘cover your cough’.....by the QLD CHO and Gov.

It’s appearing that QLD contact tracing has failed, with just one case. Now makes sense why the CHO kept slamming their borders shut... because they really couldn’t manage it.

It’s looking like they actually didn’t fully investigate and properly extinguish the hospital outbreak... whoopsie

So it seems now Qld has now linked all: Covid ward doctor (couple of weeks ago) -> brother of first case this week -> first case this week -> friend of first case this week

Have they actually made the connection? I haven’t read anything that confirms how the brother got it from the doctor.

I certainly hope it is the case and this can be resolved fairly quickly. It does speak volume of this “scary, highly contagious” variant should it end at this point, though.

Queensland finds missing link to cluster as NSW set to ease restrictions

On Sunday QLD’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young said the brother of a 26-year-old man who tested positive for the virus on Thursday also had the virus. A 20-year-old man and a close contact of the older man was also found to have the same UK variant of the virus on Saturday.
The brother is believed to be the missing link between the new cases and the cluster at Brisbane’s Princess Alexander Hospital a fortnight ago.

Serology testing indicated the brother had contracted COVID-19 but had since recovered, Dr Young said. Under the circumstances, a lockdown was not required, she said.
