Australian state border restrictions

If you think WA is so special that COVID is not going to be wide spread there because it is "taken seriously" then that simply highlights how far from reality some residents of WA live.
No, I don’t live in alternate reality. Sooner or later Delta will escape from hotel quarantine or come from interstate either knowingly or not. That is why we have sharp lockdowns.

Yes, I think Western Australia IS special, but I’m sure people living in NSW and Queensland think the same about their home State.

And while I really do appreciate your comments, and I mean that sincerely, the majority of the population of Australia (majority meaning over 50%) don’t travel for work. It is very hard on those whose businesses and incomes are harshly impacted, I totally agree.

I also have family over east I would love to visit more often, but I have actually visited them twice this year. However my sister is would rather holiday in Apollo Bay than another state anyway. Some Melburnians go to the Gold Coast (for example) for holidays, but certainly not more than 50% of inhabitants. Those of us on AFF discuss travel restrictions so much because we are all invested in flying.
This is very much the crux of the matter. WA is an extreme example, but it's no different for the other States. The majority of the population are not severely impacted by travel restrictions, so it'll be a very courageous (political synonym for "stupid") premier who allows people in from a another State that has higher Covid figures.
I picture it as children fighting over a bag of lollies. Short of violence, they'll never resolve the situation unless an adult negotiates an acceptable outcome. That way the children maintain dignity and if they secretly feel cheated, they hold the adult responsible.

Thing is the inevitability of COVID spread after 80% vaccinated and all borders open (bar WA). Once it gets into WA you won't get it out.

You may be lucky and avoid it for months, but let's say multiple cases May next year (let's say for Scomo's sake the week after his big May day). Your Premier locks down Perth, then the whole state, and it's months and months, and like all other Australian states you have hundred's of rolling cases per day, but little ICU and death.

Per our Phase 3 plan, WA residents will be able to fly anywhere in Australia unrestricted, and fly to Singapore, NZ, Fiji and probably many SE Asian countries for holidays, but not be able to go for a walk outside your home unless genuine exercise.

Question is:

A) Is driving to the airport classified as one of the four reasons to leave your home?
B) If so planes will be 100% packed leaving WA, but a bit expensive as no-one will be flying to WA as they will all be in Hotel Quarantine.

I'm not being sarcastic.

That is why we have sharp lockdowns.
I understand, but the reality is that the sharp lockdowns will become less and less tolerated, and frankly Melbourne has spent 4 of the last 5 weeks in a lockdown that has very similar conditions to what WA has done in the past in Perth, and the case load has not reduced. The distribution of cases across the metro area has not stopped (in fact, it is getting worse). That is the new reality.

Yes, I think Western Australia IS special
The place itself might be special in its own way, however the people that live there are exactly the same people as live in NSW, VIC, SA, TAS, QLD, ACT and NT and are subject to making the same sacrifices, the same mistakes, and ultimately will converge upon the same reality. People here say "we know how to do a proper lockdown in Melbourne". Ok, let's assume that is somehow true - spread is not being stamped out. It is being supressed at best.

If WA continue with this rhetoric it will further reduce their already slow vaccination rollout. We cannot have the other 7 jurisdictions held hostage while Mark McGowan tells people in effect there is no need to vaccinate as ill stop any spread through lockdowns.

If WA think they can keep using lockdowns post 80 percent vaccination there will be a mass exodus of both capital and people out of WA for jurisdictions with more certainty.

I actually think this border restriction rhetoric is just to try and deflect from WA’s disaster of a vaccine rollout - which is being called out with every daily update… Every time it’s on the news WA are shamed for coming last and by a long way…

Let’s face it we Australians are VERY competitive. No one like being the idiot state left last in the ladder and right now WA are absolutely botching their rollout…. Bit of a mess.

Article in The Age this morning from one of the Doherty chronies stating even at 80% vaccinated across the nation and we in Phase 3, recommendation we do not open up travel between state borders if one state (i.e. NSW) has case numbers above 500 per day. My thoughts were practically every state would be around 500 cases per day each, replicating what has happened across the world with highly vaccinated countries.

What happened to treat COVID like the Flu, and concentrate of ICU and deaths as primary concern? With massive vaccinations, we'll all get COVID, but only fraction of us will get sick, less into ICU and minimal deaths. Elderly and sick even vaccinated will die from COVID, same as if they stepped of a nail, fell down the stairs, or got a bout of flu, pneumonia or infection from scrape or cut. Life ends near the end of your life.

We need to live, kids need hope for future, and be able to prepare for their lives.
Maybe once people are vaccinated and not feeling unwell they may just not get tested.

Probably, unless they have been directed to get tested because they were at an exposure site.....bit of a chicken and egg.

WA have their vaccination blitz of 140,000 from 16 August :)

No need to “feel” for those of us living in WA. We take reducing the spread of COVID seriously, including the occasional strict measures, so that we can live a safe and unrestricted lifestyle. Life’s pretty good over here at the moment.

And yes, I do think we will be flying internationally out of Perth in the next two years.
It will eventually leak in and spread either internationally or from NSW - That's the biggest stick the Federal Govt has against WA, to just open the international border.

Let's see how long it takes for McGowan to abandon his zero COVID strategy.

Scomo can let the planes land and go through immigration, but McGowan can stop everyone he likes from physically leaving the airport and entering WA.

Without landing caps (which has to be agreed with the Feds) their quarantine capacity will be at overflow. Plus once the virus is endemic across the nation it's bound flood in through freight / airline / other essential workers.

I have been mulling over all these assertions and thought I'd have a look at the state by state vaccination data. Comparison below is between the first date that the Feds published state by state data and today's update.

Tasmania was leading the pack, and still is, but interesting that they have the smallest increase in the last few weeks in first dose vaccinations. This drop off in demand suggests they may be closer than the other states to the point at which demand needs to be prodded more vigorously to get vaccine rates up. Tasmania is of course somewhat isolationist so I am wary of the proposition that propensity to close borders reduces demand. Obviously there are other drivers at play.

NSW has the largest increase by far in first doses, no surprise there. While there have been some moves to preference NSW this wouldn't have had a significant impact in the time period below.

WA now marginally trails the pack in first doses, having wrested the coughy prize from Qld. Interestingly WA has shown the biggest increase in second doses in the last few weeks.

There are of course a range of variables in demographics and numbers in priority groups state by state. e.g. NT has a relatively large ATSI population; Qld has a relatively large regional population.

Tasmania’s population skews elderly. As they are an island that can have very effective border closures I think there’d be a fair bit of elderly waiting for Pfizer down there. I know some that are waiting for Pfizer down there.

Well that doesn't flow because some of the students are from NSW.......
As were chronically ill patients of the hospitals. But as per the earlier post, people didn’t think it through….

Yup counting down the hours until the first person dies (again) because of our inept state government policy on the run…
