Australian state border restrictions

I've said it before but it's becoming more and more obvious that the principal problem here is political. Each State premier has painted themselves into a corner and they sit in their respective corners glowering at each other across the room.
In any sane world would Victoria and NSW be bothering about maintaining borders? They are both vaccinating as hard as they can and they both have rampant Covid. Why bother?

At least it doesn't say must have the whole house to themselves, so allows other family members to remain in place.
True.
My house is a good set up for this which is lucky as I will be going solo to UK in Dec/Jan and leaving 4 behind.

Hopefully Scroo can blow the whole place up in the High Court of Australia.

Judging from the locals, the person in question was seen in many places but SA Health has only been able to extract one location. Locals have lost a lot through her actions. Lying about where she was interstate and using the bubble to get back into the state when she'd been to Melbourne. Returning with symptoms then getting tested but then going to the shops. Sent a large number of people into Adelaide into a med hotel. Prevented businesses from opening. Restricted others. Reduced the border limit so people have been stuck away from home or work. I could go on.
Looked at logically, locals have lost a lot through Government reaction to her actions. Should a community be punished because of one transgressor? It was failings in border enforcement that allowed her to transgress.
I'm more playing devil's advocate than disagreeing. I always get uncomfortable when the locals with pitchforks start taking centre stage.

Even highly intelligent ones in Mt Gambier? 😂

Exactly. There has been a real loss of perspective when it comes to what genuine grievous misconduct is. As a convenient comparison, a certain criminal from the year 2000 was released into the community today and the tabloid rags were interviewing "locals" who seemed to want to get the pitchforks out. Have any opinion you want, but even in that case we know that vigilante justice isn't justified. Now what did this woman do to have her car torched? Ran to Coles to get some milk.

The stigma we've attached to this virus is going to take a very long time to remove.

We used to have the rule of law, not mob rule…

Maybe the problem is those creating and enforcing the rules instead of those reacting to them.

So with most of Regional NSW downgraded to an orange zone, does that mean I could go there from Metropolitan Melbourne and return, or is outbound blocked now (I would think NSW would be more likely to block us based on the case numbers now)? Of course this is once the current 15km limit from home is lifted in another month or so. Can't go anywhere just yet.

Oh yes. Must agree there. No further cases, even her children. Wait a few more days and I feel like a pizza. On the positive side, the more actions are seen as an overreaction then the more the impetus to evaluate the response.

That's very fair comment. The problem in all these cases are the people in the middle. Those whisked off to spend fourteen days in Adelaide. Even if the reaction is determined to be an overreaction, I doubt they'll even get an apology.
Has it been established yet whether they do have to pay $4k each? It seemed unlikely but who knows in our alternative reality?!

The local MPs office had better have good security and a fire alarm if they try.

A lot of the issue (at this stage) is what we’re actually punishing people for (and protecting everyone else from).

Over half of the eligible population is vaccinated in SA. This virus is fast becoming endemic in two surrounding states (separated by nothing more than an imaginary line). The virus is going to be introduced to SA in the very near future. People will die then, maybe less than if it were to be released today, or maybe not. Would someone releasing covid into SA now cause more casualties than the one individual who brings the first case of influenza every other year?

At this point in time, the state borders seem to be more about protecting the premiers egos than anything else. So the question remains, does the punishment fit the crime? And should it even be a crime at all?

Every day this stuff drags on just feels like another reason I hope these restrictions are stopped by the high court. Not too soon so that it skates through on grounds of reasonable and not too late such that it makes no difference. Timing will be hard.

The purpose of government is not to micro manage our lives, it's to collectively manage the things we can't as individuals but can as a community.

"Have a suitable home with direct entry"
Well, it looks like apartment dwellers are ruled out!
Ah yes as usual those who live in apartments by choice or economic necessity are disadvantaged.
