Australian state border restrictions

Announced as a ‘trial of the vaccinated‘ 10000 vax pax with priority to VRC members for Melb Cup Day. I have to wade through the fine print to see if this equates to being able to also see my elderly father who lives in a residential care facility in a region (not seen in over 3 months). If not - although happy to see things opening - will be really angry/disappointed … but I need to read the facts first.
….it’s currently looking like I can only travel beyond 25k once 80% 2jabbed reached (expected a few days AFTER cup) so to attend Melbcup need to be within 25km
👎👎😤😤 - however I can walk to the Myer Music Bowl for a lovely concert on 30/10…. Not a priority .. bread and circuses.

I don’t disagree with this logic, but MEL shouldn’t be the most locked down city in the world and yet it is. Expecting our politicians to make rational decisions seems to be expecting a lot.

Entirely depends on who is running the state you live in. Not really hearing any pushback from within NSW about opening up tomorrow, all the concern seems to be from outside our borders. We are used to more pragmatism in NSW where we didnt sign up for covid zero just flattening the curve.

If VIC does open up at 80% VIC vaccination to NSW travellers I expect both full vaccination and some form of COVID testing would be required at least initially. Whether that would be PCR or Rapid Test I don’t know.

If PCR test is required on arrival to enter Vic, again I wouldnt bother unless it was critical for work, as normal length of leisure visit for me is 2-3 days, spending 1/3 of the trip sitting in hotel room waiting for a results (longer is there is a backlog) means the trip isnt viable for me.

Rapid test at SYD before boarding or on arrival at MEL would be fine, 15-30 mins is no major inconvenience.

At the moment Greater Sydney and a mix of regional zones are red, so 14 days quarantine. But is that for NSW visitors, or only open to returning Vic residents at the moment?

At the moment that is only for returning Victorians with some exemptions for essential workers. A long way to go to allow leisure travellers.

I don't think anyone initially signed up for Covid 0. Some states stumbled into it...

I'm surprised that neither side of the border has imposed a restriction re vaccination requirements for the locals to cross.

The cops have been a fixture here for far too long, but without any announcement, they packed up and left just the other day. Curiously, this is pretty much what happened late last year, when there were roadblocks one day, and magically gone the next. No announcements or comments from the government on either occasion.
SA has now for returning residents.

Isn't it really a matter of when they make NSW all an orange zone? Then you have to get a test on arrival and isolate until negative. Honestly I wish QF, VA2 and Rexy would just get in a room and agree to only carry vaccinated domestic passengers it would make state border restrictions and everything tested so much simpler for everyone including our rabid Premiers to wrap their heads around.

Jeanette Young a bit flustered yesterday that Qld is continuing to not have spread from any of the many incursions. The game plan appears to be have a spreading outbreak despite the lockout, thus increase the incentive to vax, thus quicker border opening. And of course blame it on the southerners as we exit this craziness.

Instead we have quaro hotels chocka despite caps halved, 8,000 lined up on the borders, weeks to get the applications processed, and no spread because we are so bolted down. And your gift if you are fully vaxxed is that you get a ticket in the home quarantine raffle with 1,000 winners among the 8,000 outcasts. WTF?

The departure of the police from the border duties was announced the day before they left. Pretty well reported across the media. Not sure if it made it into the Boring Mail though.

It's not just leisure travellers - I (used to) travel interstate for work quite a lot. I'm not an essential worker, so have been working from home for the best part of 18 months. Looking at when I can go interstate again for work - initially from Vic to NSW, may be possible in the new year? I can handle an orange zone test on return, not so keen on quarantining for 14 days.

As a SA essential traveller, I received an e.mail asking me to upload vaccination status. I'm on the books for four States but SA is the only one to show interest in my personal vaccination status.
On the other foot, I have an e.mail from Service NSW telling me that from 11th October I'll "..need to show proof of your vaccination or medical exemption when you check in to most businesses..".
This sounds good but how is it going to work out for a small business when a customer comes in the door?

WA's blanket ban on Qld (rather than hot spots) is doing my head in. If you're fully vaxxed and come from regional Qld where there is no Covid you still can't enter WA without mandatory 14 days self or hotel quarantine. Surely the Qld Govt. could come up with a reciprocal blanket ban on West Australians until their public servants came to their senses or learned rational thinking...

Watching the two backward states fighting it out over who can be dumber with border restrictions would be an interesting sport to watch :)

I'm sure they'd be quite happy if the other states locked them out. Then they can push the blame elsewhere.

Exactly. Son is a FIFO worker and has been stuck in a Melb hotel since early September and is not a happy chappy. He got offered a home quarantine spot but since we live in Nth Queensland he was not eligible. Why can't they open up more quarantine rooms for returning Queenslanders?

It's driven by politics...

Why would he do that (other than it being the right thing in a democracy)? He'd then be "responsible" (in one sense only I fear).
