Australian state border restrictions

For those watching the borders on here - what do you think are the chances of being able to go on a booked family visit to Sydney (from Melbourne) in the week before Christmas. Borders are open but I'm concerned Dan will slam them shut again if there is significant Omicron transmission in NSW, stranding us there again. It would be our first trip interstate in two years, and we aren't game to book any other state, though ones like Qld and Tas say they will be open by then.

I have 99.9% confidence that NSW & VIC borders will remain open to each other. They both have 90%+ double vaccination rates now.

Id be very surprised if VIC closes to NSW. Id say the biggest risk is cases on domestic flights and then deeming the whole flight as close contacts.

It will be the end of the Andrews government if they slam the borders closed/lock down again and they know that very well. I'm going to the SCG test in Jan and have almost full confidence.

I would agree with this. I'm certainly booking my upcoming NSW trip based on free movement between Vic and NSW. Our plan involves several border crossings.
Getting back into SA and then home to Tasmania is where we're stressing. The people cancelling jobs on us are either Queensland or Tasmanian based.

Flew to Syd this week & back to Melbourne.
Flying to Coffs Harbour this weekend for a week from Melbourne & not concerned at all re; border closure.

Omi-what??? as they say in the stockmarket, ignore the noise!

Gosh no problems. VIC/NSW/ACT are all good would have no hesitations.

Presumably would have to quarantine for 7/14 days if the plane were designated close contacts. That's a risk we're aware of and it would ruin the holiday but that's COVID for you! It's been impossible to plan for anything with certainty for a long time.

Thanks for the feedback - I was thinking it was unlikely that Vic/NSW border would close but with Omicron it still could throw a spanner in the works.

I suspect many would just ignore this directive these days….

But yes, VIC/NSW/ACT is the way to go for a more meandered sensible approach!

Unless if the plane passengers were directed to Hotel (Medi-Hotel) quarantine, which still is possible those days

I was talking to someone today. Important job in WA but based in NSW. They were considering a fourteen day holiday in SA to enable a return to work. They've previously done similar in the NT. Obviously these plans have now been abandoned.
My question is how did we reach this stage? There's a world of difference between those travelling for work and those travelling for pleasure and yet there appears to be minimal recognition of this? Is it because in a politician's life, all travel is done for pleasure, the only question is who pays for it?

I had heard yesterday that the SA border was very close to being shut and it took some last minute wrangling for Marshall to keep it open but this afternoon I was told it could potentially close on the weekend and that the Commissioner and Spurrier are angling for it to close

LOL

These people need to be turfed from decision making. Or at least the person taking their advice allowing it to become decision making.

Why is it bye test match? Isn't the order Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, presumably Hobart?
People will be flying in from across Australia and the world. Not everyone goes to every test match. Adelaide hosts the only day/night test match.

Ok, I would have thought unless a dual citizen (or Singaporean citizen), it would be hard to get into Australia to watch a Test match, And the order makes it unlikely for the Adelaide Test to be postponed or cancelled with players coming from 'safe' Brisbane.

Why?

Well, tomorrow they are meeting to close off the border again to NSW, Canberra and Victoria. I'm done. Bye Test Match.

Why?
