Ignoring any question of whether it is needed or not, the functionality of it does seem to have been better thought out by the Victorian government this time around. No sign of any plans to divide towns in half, and so making the lives of those living in them even more miserable. There’s at least one checkpoint on the highway, but apparently it’s making sensible use of number plater readers, so not everyone is being stopped. It’s also not inside a town.
Last time around it was a medical disaster, with people who needed to get to Melbourne being unable to do so. I just had a look at the updated site, and they’ve specifically addressed this, and similar concerns, so it shouldn‘t have the same impact on Albury that it did last time. As an aside, a friend of mine who was caught up in this last time around, will probably die because of the delayed treatment (by both sides of the border), but I guess it won’t be counted as a death caused by bureaucratic ineptitude.
Of course, I am talking about an Australian government, so there’s plenty of time for them to screw it up.
