tania is correct - middle name not needed.

For any country requiring advance passenger information, the details are lifted directly off the passport at check-in.

UA MP isn't looking too shabby. Especially with the 80% bonus I got offered last time around.

Thanks mate. I've never looked into UA. Would you please share some insights (PM if you prefer). Thanks.

nothing overly special... just they have some good rates for Asia from Australia, and the booking engine puts together some creative routes. No problems booking air China. but they don't show SQ at all... but LM doesn't really ex AU anyway, so no real loss there.

bonus UA miles vary, but I got one for 80% recently. normally the bonus isn't that high.

My understanding is that UA will book SQ (if available to *A - e.g. as shown on the Aeroplan web site) if you call them. Also UA still permits stopovers on return trips. The miles are more expensive than LM even with 80% bonus (which is a targeted offer and not offered very often) and UA's booking window is only 334 days even if the *A airline you wish to book has a window to 354 days (as does AC, OZ, NH, LX, LH, ..).

I think it's harder to accumulate large numbers of miles due to per purchase and annual limits; you also cannot buy additional at time of booking like LM.

Personally with the AUD in the low 70ies I find the whole value proposition of buying miles not very attractive any more. I've stopped buying and will run down my stockpile of AA, LM and SQ then look for paid deals on business class - e.g. right now SYD-LAX return in business is as low as $AUD 4500 during July and August - SYD-Europe can be as low as $AUD 5500 return in business on one of the AY or LH deals.

As I travel often, I have 'positioned' myself in Europe. This allows me to buy return tickets xEU. I've been purchasing J fares xOSL in the low A$3k. With intra-EU positioning flights this comes up to the high $3k (sometimes just shy of $4k). This is flying business in airlines such as CX. Relative to buying miles and the hassle of finding and booking scarce reward seats this has been a no brainer. But one should never stop exploring, right? ;-)

re: Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

Quick update in my previous entries I have noted the issues I've had with the screen shot method. So lifemiles booked me on a flight leaving in a couple days. Support sent me an email with booking reference and that I needed to call to pay for flights. Called up about 8 hours later only to be told the flight had auto cancelled because it wasn't paid in time. Aghhhh. I was over it. Then about 4 hours later lifemiles called to take payment??? It seems to be ok but the charge quoted was wrong but the right amount has come out of cc. Hmmm. It has been painful but it will be worth it when I'm eating caviar on my first class flight tomorrow. :)

Did you check the airline's website to ensure you have a valid ticket and your reservation still there? If you have an e-ticket number in your reservation on the website then you should be fine.

re: Avianca "Lifemiles" - Questions and Discussion

Any help with thoughts on how to get to Alaska from Perth using lifemiles for the significant flights, in J?

It will have to be screenshots, and I don't think I'll be able to get all the way there in one booking, but getting to the West Coast of North America would be a great start.

Currently I know of PER-BKK-TYO-SEA or PER-xx_-ICN-SEA that may be possible. Any others?
I don't need current availability as I am still planning but aiming for April 2017.

Or- does anyone suggest an alternative points source/purchase that I should use?

Thanks!

I also recommend AC ex-SYD or BNE to YVR - currently available on April 17, 2017 (2 J seats). AC also have seasonal fights from YVR to Alaska - what city are you heading to? PER-SYD or BNE can be easily done using AA points (wait for promo if one is not on now) - even after the recent AA devaluation it's still good value in J within OZ.

Also Brisbane- Taipei-West Coast on Eva Air might be an idea, not sure if LifeMiles shows their flights though at least I could not see any but they do exist

Alaska Airlines is a partner with American Airlines. They have just closed their latest bonus promotion on buying miles but have them quite regularly. We purchased AA points for our last trip back from Europe, a lot cheaper than buying tickets. Join AA Advantage now as you have to have been a member for a period (I think about 40 days?) before you are allowed to purchase miles.

Found Anchorage to Perth on 13/2/17 First Business Class for 82.5K points on AA Advantage. April 2017 is not open yet.
