BP terminates Velocity Agreement effective 30 June 2017 - Velocity sues

BP are always on par with Caltex/Woolies around me, whereas the Coles/Shell petrol stations are always more expensive.

I've found BP to be cheaper than Coles/Shell most of the time where I am. I've been using Petrol Spy, and the BP by my work has always had the cheapest price around.
That said however, I used a Coles/Shell yesterday and it was the same price as the BP. (13x points offer )

BP is mostly more expensive but it was nice to have a choice and some of the promotions were ok.

The trial has been fast-tracked and set down for 3 days commencing 5 September 2017.

It does not appear Velocity has applied for an interlocutory or interim injunction, so it's unclear what will happen between 30 June and when judgment is given (if it gets that far).

Seem to recall the outlet near OOL being at least 20c a litre more expensive than the nearby Coles Express, presumably to capture that lucrative "return rental with full tank" market.

Gold coast petrol is progressively more expensive the further south or north you go, with the peak near the airport. Cheapest fuel hub is GC Highway Labrador then progressively spreads out from there.

But I am so grateful for BP's pricing strategy. I drive past two everyday, once every 6-8 weeks they have a big neon lights that says something like "we just put our fuel up by 20c, 48 hours before everyone else, so go fill up elsewhere right now". It works *every* time.

With this merger, that hopefully will mean even more stations will be offering us the early warning of the price jump :)
Winning.

This reads like an ozbargain forum - who knew people take so much notice of fluctuating fuel prices?!

If outlet A gives Velocity points, and outlet B gives Qantas points, do you really care where you shop?

Most Australians would collect both currencies, right?

No, we only collect Velocity points. I do have a QF account which I signed up for several years ago as part of the WW rewards program (in whatever incarnation it was then), but I use any WWR points for $ off my shopping and we never fly Qantas.

If the Caltex/Woolies stations are to be fully converted to BP, signage and deals, then the shell/coles stations must be rubbing their hands with glee as they will be the only (major) player in town (PER) to offer both cheap signage petrol and shopper dockets which will bring their pump price to well under 10c/litre cheaper than BP on any given day all other things remaining equal.

I note that over here the 'independents' of which there are now _many_ seem to be largely ignoring the so called 'price cycle' style of product placement that is favoured over here by the majors - for the most part, the price at the independents is the price, on any given day ... usually cheaper than the majors but not always, dependent upon where the majors are in their weekly price cycle.

Perhaps this long and protracted price war, covering now many many years, between the major players is coming to an end - perhaps no-one was really making any money??? I don't have a clue tbh, but surely with woolies fuel soon to be gone, in favour of branded BP outlets, the Coles fuel team must feel less price pressure than previously. Whichever way we cut it, I can't see how this is all going to wash up as good for the consumer.

I prefer BP fuel and I fly VA, so definitely a negative for me.

Everything else being equal, I prefer BP as well. But it has to be within limits and even given VA points which I do value, the BP stations over in the west are generally so much more expensive that you're paying directly for your points + an added premium to use them. I just can't justify it. If price + shopper dockets + VA points = roughly the same monetary value then I'll swing to BP. But for the longest time BP just hasn't been able, or perhaps prepared, to be price competitive, even with points or other promotions on offer.

My suspicion with this early termination of the agreement with VA is that the partnership never really worked for BP, at least not in a way they could easily measure. For over a year now I've been getting constant emails from VA about BP this and BP that, they're pushing hard to make it work, but ultimately, fuel is a commodity, its a hard sell to try and be a 'premium' fuel supplier without clear evidence that your fuel is, in fact, somehow 'better' and worth the extra coin.

Just got this offer - nice timing!!!

Reward yourself with 4 Points per $1^ spent in-store on your next visit to BP*.
Plus fuel your Points even more with 150 bonus Points^ on your next fill.
Simply activate this offer by 4 June 2017.

I go a little out of my way to fill at BP (VA points plus QFF 1.5:1 on Amex no surcharge). They're competitive within a cent or so of both a Coles and a United within 100metres. Looks like a faster run home after 30 June!

Well, whatever is happening in the courts, it's not stopping Velocity offering promos on spend at BP.

This just arrived into my inbox.

BP is normally around the same price or slightly cheaper than Shell or Caltex in my area. I prefer BP fuel but will seriously considering elsewhere if they keep the coughpy QF earn rates

Without wanting to put a dampener on the discussion as to whether BP is expensive of not, that all seems rather off-topic to me!

My Local BP never even accepted Velocity anyway......were pretty useless to me.
