Re: Census 2016

Or a name. Pick a name. Any name.
<snip>

If its not yours (in your case), that'll be $180/day fine until you make good. Thank-you for contributing to the nation's bottom line :). I'm sure they will spend it wisely.

And how will they know? Maybe you shouldn't have put in that last tax return, Medibank claim etc. . The ABS can't give out data - nothing to say they can't get cross-match data from other departments.

Well, our household didn't receive a form/code and I can't get through to anyone on the phone as the ABS is predictably experiencing a "high volume of calls"...

Relax. you've got weeks to get the form/log-on and send it back.

One can only wonder how the website might cope if the phone lines cant.

THAT is a good question (although phone lines need a human ... which are limited in supply; web site doesn't)! I did mine on a paper form for just that reason.

Census 2016

I wonder what the fine is for people who complete the census but are not in the country? Oops. Damn that pesky immigration department.

You know, I would have preferred paper too than running my details through online. Seems like there is a separation involved.

Re: Census 2016

I am surprised about the negative reaction from the politicians;

It would be like a school not teaching the standard curriculum and instead of doing what they want even though they are being paid by the government to teach students.

I find Apple and Facebook sharing enough information so I am surprised at a few people are upset with the ABS, a few times Facebook has suggested friends on FAcebook who I have only ever contacted via imessage.

Its like signing up for a frequent flyer program and even though you don't want the data shared you know its going to happen, maybe not directly but you will get some targeted messages.

Re: Census 2016

Just had a form hand delivered to me at the hotel in staying at for work. 99% sure I was away last census night as well, but that time the form didn't make it to me.

Re: Census 2016

Lots of reports on Facebook that the website has gone down. Glad I did mine before dinner.

Re: Census 2016

Yep just got home.

tried to do ours

Census website has crashed. After multiple public statements through multiple news outets by ABS that their servers could handle all the traffic.

And the ABS says they have never been hacked, so we should trust them with our identifiable data.... Haha!!!

Whatever the reason it is for the crash - the trust is out the window. Awaiting parliamentary inquiry......

Hey ABS, Can I tick a box at the bottom to indicate that my personal information cannot be sold to a party outside of the ABS?

It can't! I fired it up 7pm ... but had dinner first ... silly me ...

Maybe there's been a denial of service attack?

Not really relevant - there a difference between a website being overloaded and actually stealing data from it ...

... in fact there's no chance of stealing data since no-one can access the site ...

Re: Census 2016

The web site is not working for us so it's either do it later OR us the paper copy they so kindly delivered.

:D. Did ours last night. Quite fast it was.

Re: Census 2016

I've tried 4 times to access the site with no luck. That's enough time wasted, I give up. Not sure how they are going to justify fining people if access is not possible.

Maybe. If they say they have properly tested it for crashes and it crashes, can we be assured data cant be hacked when they said it wont?
Doesn't encourage the trust/competence factor really.

Au Contraire!. The ABS made repeated public statements about the security of our personal information. They have also made similar statements on the integrity of the census night servers. Essentially they are saying "Trust us". Their servers have crashed despite their strong assurances and declarations. Do we now still believe them when they say their database has never been hacked and by extension will never be hacked?

you got until Sept 23 to provide the data pertaining to 9 August 2016

Exactly. For goodness sake, everyone just relax.

Some people just aren't happy except if they are in a crisis.

Mind you, if the site has gone down, as opposed to a denial of service attack, then its the unemployment line for the census bods. I'm happy to defend the census, not the management.

Sort of fair point, but what info are you giving in the census that you don't give in your tax return? That can be done on-line, and in any event is stored by the Tax Dept for at least 7 years (not just 4), in strictly and purposefully identifiable form, and freely shared around govt depts. and is 'hackable'. So, honestly, what's the big deal about the census, which unlike tax etc has the security of data protected by legislation?

All this hysteria about census 'privacy' and 'potential for hacking'. FFS - we've been doing it every 5 years for 70+ years; its been stored in computers for decades; its been hackable for decades.

Gee, I wish I had so little to be worried about that I had the time and energy to go into a frenzy of angst over a common census. Good grief.

When a government department/entity says "trust us", "don't argue", "just accept that we the bureaucracy know better", most people will reply with various expletives.
I dont think people are against the census, just its design and implementation.

Re: Census 2016

Can only laugh that it's down.

Wonder though if there's a botnet refreshing the site just to prove a point, that the system couldn't handle the load! :p
