Re: Census 2016

Highly unlikely that the people responsible for this will be sacked. The Australian Statistician can only be sacked by a two thirds majority of both houses of parliament or if he is found to be insane. I think the second option is more likely ;).

All correct. Point 3 = even more reason to be cynical of the ABS. At least we can sack politicians by proportional representation rules.

Re: Census 2016

I don't trust anyone. Someone must prove they can be trusted before I will do so. Anyone saying something along the lines of "trust us" just makes them less trustworthy.

Sorry. Its a matter of trust.

I'm not that great with trust either. But I also apply a filter - does it actually matter a rat's cough? As far as the census is concerned, my reply to that is no. I want my data to be private to the ABS, but if it was hacked and released publically, there is nothing in there that I would care about being public. And no, to pre-empt a certain question, I'm not going to do it here. ;)

Again, why all this stress and invective about the census and 'privacy'? I've put the question and facts several times about what you put in your tax return, possibly on-line and which is definitely shared between government agencies. No-one has touched that.

Seriously ... does anyone here concerned about census 'privacy' have an equal concern about the collection of tax info, and the data matching they say does go on? Do you threaten or actually do not put your name on their tax return? No? Why is the census different? The tax info collected is actually a lot less sensitive and often on-line) I reckon and both have legislative backing, with penalties.

As for the census site crashing (disgraceful) .. well, like amaroo I pre-empted that by asking for a paper form.

Census website still down for me.

I did the census tonight...took about 5 minutes....full of typos etc but who cares ;) I refused to disclose my total income!
At least you know your total income. I have no idea my total income....

Re: Census 2016

If the census site has crashed, then ... YAWN! Do it tomorrow, or next week. Again, some people just like to have a crisis to complain about.

The tax man will know your income, even if you don't :)

From a white Australian perspective, maybe not. However, for people of Jewish heritage, or possibly Muslims, as a couple of examples, it might matter. Other people have different filters.

Little known trivia fact, you can still do a paper tax return without having a tax file number.

Re: Census 2016

At least they'll be able to blame IBM.

No the public relations contractors for the government are currently working on a response

This will be spun as a success. "Country emphatically, enthusiatically embraces online census more than predicted - results were amazing" = proving that the move to online was the correct move going forward.

Re: Census 2016

For those concerned about data matching, a frequent flyer number (or any loyalty "membership" ID) is the ideal unique ID for marketers to link your travel, shopping, hotel spend, car hire, credit card activity, etc. etc.

For a few cents worth of points many willingly offer much more personal info than the Census asks for. And in the fine print, which is skipped in haste to get those points "before this offer expires", these companies clearly state that you agree to info being shared, sold or "to personalise our service to you" = sold.

All for a few cents worth of points.

Ps. ABS server fail. When it is a question of government conspiracy vs. ineptitude, my money will be on bureaucrat Bob f*@king up.

Re: Census 2016

So the ABS has said, that by doing the census online, it will collate results 3 months quicker. But they need to keep our names an extra 2 & a half years so they can better process the data... I am calling BS

I guess this will stop electronic voting for a decade or two.

Re: Census 2016

We did ours on Friday to avoid the heartache and frustration that was inevitable.

Re: Census 2016

It was bound to happen when.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics says its site was attacked by overseas hackers four times causing it to crash on census night
