Re: Census 2016

... Essentially they are saying "Trust us". Their servers have crashed despite their strong assurances and declarations. Do we now still believe them when they say their database has never been hacked and by extension will never be hacked?
The second part does not IMHO correlate to the first part.

They ARE different.

The second part will ALWAYS be there ... and was ALWAYS there.

The first part, well, I have been led to believe this was off-shored.

Re: Census 2016

When a government department/entity says "trust us", "don't argue", "just accept that we the bureaucracy know better", most people will reply with various expletives.
I dont think people are against the census, just its design and implementation.

ABS are actually replying to people on Facebook telling them that the site is working fine and the problem must be the user's browser settings. Amazing.

I don't trust anyone. Someone must prove they can be trusted before I will do so. Anyone saying something along the lines of "trust us" just makes them less trustworthy.

Sorry. Its a matter of trust.

  • Thank you for participating in the Census. The system is very busy at the moment. Please wait for 15 minutes before trying again. Your patience and cooperation are appreciated. [code 9]

Re: Census 2016

I was a little surprised by the narrow ranges of income that was used in the Census.

Trust us - the system is working
Trust is - the system will not crash
Trust us the database has never be hacked and will never be hacked.

Such a patronising lot, but not unusual from a Government entity

Re: Census 2016

I lodged early from New York as I expected annoying delays when the real lodgement date came around.

I am thinking of "Yes [Prime] Minister" ... there will be much ducking for cover, an inquiry that exonerates anyone alive and a recommendation the service provider be shortlisted for many more projects ...

Smart move ... I'll just do ours tomorrow ...

Re: Census 2016

If this was the Philippines right now, the census office would probably all be shot.

If someone tomorrow is not being at the minimum being verbally flogged, then this is ridiculous.

"We tested it"? The profound lack of truth in that statement would make even the most morally corrupt politician blush.

Re: Census 2016

I think there will be no let up of complaints. Most will be doing it with a certain Smugness:mrgreen:

Whilst it isn't unheard of for a government agency to absolutely screw up the implementation / execution of a major IT project, any criticism will be well deserved.

Luckily this isn't something that will actually directly affect people's livelihoods, e.g. it's not as if Centrelink had a go-live meltdown and sent out lots of misplaced social security payments to people or some BS like that. I do wonder if it has had an effect on the data collection integrity (e.g. lost data, incomplete submissions, garbled data, etc.).

Re: Census 2016

Interestingly the ABS says server testing occurred to 150 % of predicted loads.

I sopke with an engineer, load testing usually occurs to destruction of test item to see the actual load limits. I wonder if the servers were tested until the crash point. 150% of predicted can be anything....

Even aircraft wings are tested to destruction, not just 150% of "predicted" loads.

Re: Census 2016

If its not yours (in your case), that'll be $180/day fine until you make good. Thank-you for contributing to the nation's bottom line :).

That is incorrect. The $180/day fine can only be applied (and that's the maximum, decided by a magistrate, not the ABS) if you refuse to complete the Census AFTER you have been officially directed to complete the Census by the Australian Statistician. The maximum fine for providing false information is (I think) $1800. I don't believe anyone has been fined for declaring that they are Jedi worshipers or any other false information. By the way, the religion question is voluntary.

I've tried 4 times to access the site with no luck. That's enough time wasted, I give up. Not sure how they are going to justify fining people if access is not possible.

As stated previously by others, you have until 23 September to complete the Census. It will take a long time after that until you are directed to complete it, so you can probably drag it out until next year if you want to. There is no requirement to do it on-line, you can request a paper form, so access is possible.

Mind you, if the site has gone down, as opposed to a denial of service attack, then its the unemployment line for the census bods. I'm happy to defend the census, not the management.

Highly unlikely that the people responsible for this will be sacked. The Australian Statistician can only be sacked by a two thirds majority of both houses of parliament or if he is found to be insane. I think the second option is more likely ;).
