Re: Census 2016

My 5th call to the number requesting a paper form didn't get disconnected ! But then when I said I was out of the country they gave me a reference number and told me I didn't need to do one.

What a fiasco. Glad we don't have electronic voting.

Re: Census 2016

And the ABS has said they go hacked last night... Maybe a smoke screen for a totally under resources web site with not enough capacity for everyone to do it on line

Re: Census 2016

Haha the spin!.

Apparently the ABS voluntarily shut down the system - if this was the case why was people not informed last night? rather than the "try again in 15 minutes".

I don't think so, not after the minister and his minions telling us all how you beaut the system is, or was.

Probably the Chinese to get back at us for Sun Yang. Don't mess with the dark army.

Yes and a patronising declaration that the ABS has never been hacked will be like bees to honey.
Can almost guarantee that the ABS is now a target - yep a DOS is just the start

The dog ate my homework.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Oh the census is safe. The census can't be hacked. The website can handle the traffic.

Are you unable to tell the difference between posting that information on a public forum, Vs giving it to the ABS under legislated privacy and security provisions?

Actually I fully understand the difference. You're the one who seems to think the census is the same thing as facebook. Pretty low to draw a false analogy to ridicule people, and then pretend you didn't write it. They have a word for that sort of thing, shame I can't remember it.

One of the most ludicrous things is the spectacle of those saying that they won't write their names and addresses in for 'privacy' reasons. I'm guessing most of those also do facebook and use Google ;) .

don't worry. They "believe" the data is safe. What more assurance do you need.

Re: Census 2016

Mrs andye was working in Emergency last night-census people handing out special forms for staff and patients
She was the only one in the family to get her details through. I would have done if I hadn't had to stop half way through to pick up Mstr andye2 from rugby training
She said some of the ED juniors were feeling guilty for not having much time for housework or voluntary work

Re: Census 2016

It will be interesting to see the response rate when it is up and running. And if a large number dont respond, the follow up resources required will be staggering.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Looks like the Economics Editor at the Age is at risk of being labelled a conspiracy nutjob by some AFF members as well. At least I'll be in good company then.

The only problem was that it had put up the idea before to an independent privacy impact assessment, which had savaged it. So it conducted its own assessment in house, which found no problem. It published the results quietly late last year (there was nothing about in in the mainstream press) and then on the Friday before Christmas announced it would retain every name indefinitely in a press release misleadingly titled: ABS response to Privacy Impact Assessment.
By April it had backed down. It was going to keep the names for only four years, but it would keep the linkage keys created from them for as long as would be needed, which could be forever.

Woefully unprepared to explain why it now wanted to retain names, it emphasised instead the digital nature of the census. It would save millions by posting login codes to most of the population rather than delivering forms. Had it delivered, or even posted, forms it would have had a backup.
Instead it gave most of Australia only one way to submit census forms, emphasised the importance of the survey it had previously tried to ditch, threatened fines of $180 per day for people who didn't comply, and underestimated either the strain on the system or the security of the system.

Census meltdown just the latest Bureau of Statistics bungle

This is an easier way to show a full quote:

Welcome back to the discussion. The rest of us have moved on from the personal sniping and are talking about the census itself ;). How about it?

I successfully completed the census last night, on paper, precisely because I thought the on-line bit would be a fiasco.

One good thing to come out of this is that electronic voting will be off the agenda, hopefully for a very long time.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics says its site was attacked by overseas hackers four times causing it to crash on census night

Excuses, excuses... bunch of muppets.

That's the best I can think up of without resorting to a verbose tirade of heart-ripping, insulting expletives.

For whatever it was worth, my folks completed the census yesterday, and also completed my details. I have no idea when they submitted it, but seeing as I haven't heard any other stories, they must have done so successfully (and luckily).
