China travel bans from Late 2022

I haven't seen anything saying this is regulation - simply guidance. In any case, it is really trying to solve a different problem - which is lots of people sharing a confined space for a long period of time. I am not quite sure what problem the testing of pax from China is supposed to solve. A few Chinese people importing Omicron into a land that is already awash with Omicron?

Just as a little aside - and not relevant to the actual discussion point - I couldn't help noticing that your reaction was that a requirement to provide a negative test was unfair when applied to you but you're sanguine when it is applied to Chinese people.
Not comparing apples with apples.

Australia knows the variants it has. We have no internal restrictions.

Anyway, it is not the case that these restrictions apply to China only.

If you are positive you should not be travelling.

Actually Australia has ditched that. They recommend isolating if you are positive but no longer mandate it. It is up to individuals. Unless you are Chinese, it seems.

It should be noted that China itself requires a negative covid test for people to enter China. If they dont remove this requirement then cant really complain about other countries doing the same.

Im not fussed, as am quad vaxed and have had covid (which was nothing compared to the cold i picked up in Tasmania 2 weeks prior to xmas, which has left me with a random lingering cough, no cough with covid whatsoever).

My distrust of the CCP when it comes to covid, apart from their secrecy, is when the first outbreak started they banned all domestic flights from Wuhan yet allowed international flights.

So you are letting your thoughts on managing a public health situation be swayed by your dislike of a political party?

This is what’s been happening since day one with this virus. It was Labor vs Liberal in the state wars, us vs dirty, overpopulated, third world India when delta appeared, the world vs scary, black, violent Southern Africa when omicron first started (after two Dutch tourists imported it to Botswana).

If these “variants” had started in Indianapolis or Boston, we wouldn’t have cared less, but the difference a few letters can make….. (oh, and blatant xenophobia).

Let's get this straight. We are not banning Chinese travellers but travellers from China. So Chinese citizens living in other countries can travel to Australia.
they are not banned but must be tested negative before entering Australia

Can you remind us precisely which problem this action is designed to address? Because in the absence of any scientific or medical support for it, it does appear to be motivated from a wish to inconvenience Chinese people. The fact that a some Chinese people might not be impacted by it does not disguise the clear political motivation behind the policy.

Unless you can explain to me what problem we are solving?

You are trying to turn this into something with a racial or political motivation. It’s not. It is simply governments being cautious.

While we don’t have testing in place from other countries at the moment, the fact remains that anyone with covid really shouldn’t be getting on a plane anyway.

Just trying to understand your position. You can't define the problem we are trying to solve; you can't point to any scientific or medical advice that supports the action; and you yourself thought it was unfair when in a different situation you were asked to provide a negative test in order to go on holiday.

Very few decisions during the pandemic were based on the science. General lockdowns being the worst of those decisions. There were pandemic protocols and before 2019 General lockdowns were never a part of the plans.

So just like many other decisions this decision is political but the reason is that the Australian population were scared witless during the pandemic and I suspect that the government was getting a lot of feedback demanding something be done.

Covid has certainly created some interesting social phenomena. Like everything else nowadays, everyone is free to identify with and forcefully prosecute their own version of the "science" and "truth" etc. Rather than unite humanity against an existential threat, Covid appears to have caused the very opposite, with growing intergroup conflict and political polarisation. As a student of such matters, I find myself living in interesting times indeed.
