Indeed, I get the impression Aussies are too busy emptying supermarket shelves to go on holiday!
cheers skip

Not at the supermarkets I frequent. And at Costco, when don't shoppers here have full trollies?

I think it is more that hand sanitiser has a run on.

Heard a story this afternoon of a friend of a friend (!) has new born twins, but the system (!) stopped her from buying 2 of everything that she needed, surely some common sense needs to come into this.

Please support your local restaurants a few nights a week if you have the means. Most are now desperately doing takeaway to stay afloat.

And please please please try and avoid using Uber Eats / Deliveroo / Menu Log - any of those third party delivery apps. They take up to 30% of what the restaurant makes.

Please pick up yourself or if the restaurant delivers themselves that is ok.

Sorry I just walked down our high street and it’s only about 40% full when normally there are queues to get in everywhere. Was quite upsetting.

I was a teenager during the last recession - that part of the economy doesn't stand a chance.

It's going to be very tough - your gov, or even the one you wanted, won't deliver what you want. Massive adjustment coming your way!

The Woolworths system will lock out the checkouts and prevent more then the programed limits in the same transaction. Only store management can override the lock out.

I believe the person was given the extras for free when the situation was explained, was store management involved, I don't know.

At my local, smallish, shopping centre.

No toilet paper or flour. A little bit of pasta.

Coles had a reasonable amount of meat including mince. Basically no eggs. Plenty of bread. Vegetables fully stocked. About 50% stocked cereals. Plenty of cheese.

Woolworths had plenty of meat including sausages. Enough mince to hold an "All Texas Chili Making Competition". Fair supply of eggs. Some rice, plenty of tinned beans, some tinned tuna. Lots of bread. Vegetables fully stocked. Painkillers pretty empty. Small supply of frozen vegetables.

The independent butchers shop was again full of meat.

Why are people hoarding fresh eggs? What is wrong with people?
Plenty of eggs down at IGA

The answer to your question is that people are idiots.

But if they buy perishable items that get tossed, good - that will put money in to various people's pockets that probably need it.

I suspect also that the panic buyers will be among the first to demand more government money for themselves.

Like mince, if you have eggs you have a meal. And they last a long time.

I heard someone on an aged care pension complaining that they needed more cash. The reporter replied that they were about to get $750 into their bank accounts plus their fortnightly pension was still coming in. Now I get it that pensioners do it tough, but Covid hasn't added to that and right now there are families who weren't on Centrelink and who won't get that $750 and are now having to determine if they can be helped as there is no longer any breadwinner.

According to UK Daily Telegraph there are calls for NHS workers to get priority at supermarkets as shops get stripped by panic buyers.

I'd like for families with young children to get more consideration. I don't think they are the panic buyers because shopping with young kids at the best of times is a nightmare.

We have a one year old but don't get the handout. I run a business (sole trader) but don't get the handout. They havent really planned it very well...

And now that people are WFH, when those that are still going work and then try to go the supermarket after work there is nothing left.

They rarely do - it is as if such scenarios are never planned for which I find difficult to believe. I would have thought most government departments would have a pandemic plan. No doubt the emergency services, hospitals, trains, etc. do and are probably actioning them but maybe Treasury don't or maybe they do and the current government thinks they know better. The RBA seemed to have a plan. I am no expert in these areas and pure speculation on my part.

Maybe Scomo and Josh will just abolish income tax? I'd be happy with that. :)

My chiropractor was telling me this morning he was at Woolies and someone was trying to return about 10 packets of flour. Front desk saying no returns and person getting snarky.

Person said, 'What am I suppose to do with all this flour!?'

Would have loved for Woolies staff to answer honestly.
