Indeed, I get the impression Aussies are too busy emptying supermarket shelves to go on holiday!
cheers skip

Not at the supermarkets I frequent. And at Costco, when don't shoppers here have full trollies?

I think it is more that hand sanitiser has a run on.

If it is not specifically listed as banned then it seems to be OK so turn up to work on Monday. Things may have changed by Tuesday though.

NSW and Vic were seemingly looking at stricter rules but agreed to lessor measures to enable a national approach that only bans activities that 'gather' people in close proximity.

Given this change is going to take 10-14 days to have any impact on the stats I think this is likely to be the case for at least two weeks.

And hopefully the prior measures of the 14-day quarantine and loss of foreign tourists, hand washing and toilet paper make a difference to the exponential curve.

But the numbers will be a lot higher in 2wks

Under "national rules" - yes. Individual states (e.g. Vic NSW) may implement their own stricter rules.
Absolutely, business as usual.
ACT is following NSW. I wish they had not announced the stricter shutdown, until they defined it properly. Daughter and SIL are under mega stress as they don’t know whether he can continue with his landscaping business or not and she is on a year’s mat leave with heavily reduced income.

Classic case of panic.

So proud of Anna (QLD P) never ever thought I would say that. QLD has almost the same numbers as VIC.

Very disappointing the rogue states have gone alone.... they must have been shown some serious numbers tonight.

Victoria has long been seeking a hiding given the way they act as if they are better than everyone and every piece of advice.

Maybe because the rouge states,Sydney specifically, are more selfish by nature so need a firmer hand. And I say that as a Sydneysider

I wish it was full lockdown but I think we're going to be slamned with higher numbers in 2-3 weeks that will force it

In reality the Federal lockdown was all about preventing those flouting the social isolation requirement who kept partying over the weekend. The Bondi Beach issue. Even local cafes here on the weekend were full of people who couldn't help but be touching each other.

Currently the Federal aim is to have business as usual with appropriate caution for as long as possible. Of course that will change. Just wish NSW Govt would get their act together.

Well said and very true. Add VIC to NSW too...

To quote the Age: "Victoria has walked back its proposed shutdown of everything bar essential services - which was discussed yesterday - and has fallen in line with the Commonwealth"

This after the Premier's 8am presser.

I wonder if both Premiers acted with emotion (anger) when cracking down yesterday, rather than with logic. And behind closed doors they were royally blasted. NSW needs more than a blast, so much good work undone with the Ruby Princess.

Or it was an agreed tactic (releasing those statements) just before the National Cabinet meeting to get a firmer response.

That would imply some kind of clever intelligent strategy between two rival states with very different Premiers. Likely?

This morning a coworker offered me 2 bars of soap, as I mentioned last week we were running low. Since found 5 bars at home but so kind of her.

I gave toilet paper to a different co worker and a third gave someone a big box of noodles.

Small acts of kindness are needed.

Nah, they were "speaking twitter" - their statements left too much unsaid.

Yes well they caused needless anxiety and worry to small businesses. You only need to go to Andrew Barr’s Facebook page and read the comments where he announced the shutdown to see the worry it caused. It might come to it in anyway in a few weeks and thousands more will lose their businesses overnight but don’t cause this anxiety until it really is going to happen.

Absolutely agree. It created so much confusion. Distress. Much too soon to go down that route.

I have today off work, went to the local store (where I used to work before I was forced to transfer a few years ago >_<) this morning.
Timed to get there right as old people hour ended.
About 30 people waiting outside when the security guard (now one in every store from open to close, before was just security in select stores for select hours) and the duty manager let people in. Almost everyone goes right for the TP. Enough stock for maybe 2 hours in current environment.
Was requested to get a packet before leaving the house for extended family emergency supply. Grandparents have been low for the past week.

Had to get alternatives for 2 things I normally buy.

I am sure that the National Cabinet with its State Premier membership has robust discussions with variable opinions at times,, and variable circumstances which then may mean local tweaking.

Way too much is being made of Victorian Schools closing several days early of the scheduled school holiday period (something that I have been tipping for some weeks, as have my several neighbours who has primary aged kids and who were planning for it on that basis)

I would be cautious in believing everything that some in the media say or write. There are way too many so called "journalists" who are still seeking the Tabloid approach to enflame and fan panics by making the most dramatic headline, or who simply seem incapable of understanding or are putting their own ego before the common good.

Even The Age with its recent front page of 150,000 to die (ie running with the worst case scenario) has been a disgrace.

Whomever that young female journalist was during the PM's press conference on Sunday was a disgrace.

Karl Stefanovic on TV this morning was a disgrace.

I am sure you all know journalists who are to be trusted, but please cull out those that seek to enflame, or who simply seem incapable of understanding information. Just listen to the good ones.

Now is the time to pull together and to all act sensibly. More of our journalists need to do this.

I have been pretty unimpressed with the leadership generally at both state and federal level. Desperate times need desperate measures. Can't we co-opt Shane Fitzsimmons as PM to steer the country through this crisis? He was outstanding as NSW Rural Fire Services commissioner during the bushfires crisis.
