Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

AC I actually called Langtons and they told me these coming direct from wineries.

Oh - it could be. I assumed it was a private cellar sale as my broker said that they've examined the bottles. Could be that the stocks have come direct from wineries, but are being stored in Langton's warehouse prior to dispatch.

I spent my December wine budget today in the matter of 10 minutes :)

Looking forward to the 2012. I didn't expect much from the 2011 as it was generally a very bad year for SA reds so was pleasantly surprised. Have you tried the Peter Lehmann 2013 Layers red blend? Recommended.

Was drinking a 2010 the other day which was lovely. Not tried the 2013... yet.

Mike Press Wines currently have some Christmas specials.

A case of mixed white wines including Rose for $110, mixed reds for $135 or mixed white and red for $122. Prices include delivery.

They also have a 4 case deal, 2 cases of white including Rose or Sparkiling Rose and 2 cases of red for $400 + delivery.
Delivery is free if you live in ADL metro or hills.
The wines are:
2015 Sauvignon Blanc
2015 Chardonay
2015 Pinot Rose
2015 Sparkling Pinot Rose
2013 Shiraz - will change to 2014 when stock runs out
2013 Merlot.

Since I can't attach a PDF order form to this post just send me a PM if interested and I can email you one.

I just purchased 2 doz SB, and one each of the Shiraz and Merlot. Also sent a mate the mixed red/white for Chrissy.
Looks like I'm set for the Festive Season.

Here's a vote for Mike, for those that know him, he'd be consistently at the top of many people's value for money list. Way better value than buying Penfolds IMO.

Agree the Langton prices are very attractive.

Is anyone else concerned that they seem to be heavily discounted? For example the 2008 Dead Arm is cheaper than the current release (and probably 50% cheaper than the auction prices).

I wouldn't worry about that. Dead arm, Coppermine road, Ironstone pressings are often sold at much less than RRP.

I recently picked up a very large amount of 1998 and 1998 Coppermine Rd + Ironstone pressings for under $20 a bottle at auction.

Just to give you some comfort: It was a huge cellar collection that Langtons did a job-lot purchase on, so everybody is making money or saving money. The stuff was acquired direct from the wineries by the collector and went straight into premium wine storage, so the providence is exceptional they say. They have been opening a few of the earlier bottles (the 01s) and say the corks are in A1 condition, backing up the fact they were correctly cellared. If you are interested, the stuff is flying off the shelves. It's not everyday, wines of this quality, age and providence come up, at least not in the quantities they are selling.

I picked up a case of this last time it was on offer for $95 delivered. Nice wine for a bargain basement price.
the closest thing to a French wine (excluding bubbles) that I have bought in decades is the arrogant frog.....and thankfully only one bottle.

please give us your own tasting notes on this one as it reads very well, and the price appears a true bargain in the vinimofo style.
What I worry about is the lack of body/presence in wines, but the spiel intrigues a little with talk of tannins and a little refinement. All this is an eight bucker Frenchy? Do tell for the rest of us....
Dannys has had some really good one hundred dollar deals recently.

I'm not big on tasting notes per se, I'm no expert. I do know what I like though. Next time I open a bottle, I'll try and make some mental notes and report back.

That said, I like it enough to pay the $14 full price per bottle, making the current offer great value, IMO.

Can someone give me an idea of the products that you bought from this langtons auction, whether the offerings were fairly priced, or bargains, or just great drops that are hard to come by. Being a novice, I am intrigued by this particular sale as a lot of punters got on. Could you also get a dud, and have folks been disappointed buying this way ? Thanks for any comments.

Ditto from me :)

It was a private cellar sale, of mostly iconic Australian wines - everything from Clarendon Hills Astralis/Torbreck RunRig (at the very top end) through to the next tier - Elderton Command Shiraz, Domaine A Cab Sauv, Grant Burge Meshach, Cullen Diana Madeline etc. Everything aged, from 2002, through 2009. If that's not what you're interested in, then I wouldn't bother with the sale. I thought the asking price was more than reasonable - 2002 Command Shiraz for $60/bottle is excellent buying (if you are into Command shiraz) - the current 2012 vintage sells for $110/bottle. Astralis at $295/bottle (and you can pick your vintage) is also quite good IMHO. RunRig at $175/bottle is not so much of a discount, but there was a range of vintages available, and securing those (as opposed to current release) isn't that easy. Current release is $200/bottle from memory.

You can definitely get a dud, but Langtons are generally a premium reseller, and as this wasn't an auction of 3rd party wine, but something Langtons were selling direct, I think they'd be reasonable in refunding you if you got an obviously spoilt wine.
