Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

I was just looking at this and it seems to me to be $85 per bottle, in a single bottle buy?

You are right ... offer from the broker is single bottle buy.

I bought the initial 6 pack. Cracked opened my first bottle, the cork broke but the nose and taste was still yum yum yum (even after transporting the bottle on two plane flights over 4000 km)

I'm wondering how Langton's and other bidding websites ensure the quality of wines sold by 3rd parties. I'm pretty sure many sellers don't keep their wines in ideal conditions...

I asked them when I purchased and the rep ensured proper storage. (Direct buy rather than auction). I will call them to tell them about the cork issue when I get home,

For langtons they ask the seller for a description of how the wine was stored. That's all.

DM at middle park in Brisbane have '13 wolf blass grey label for $21.59. Apparently excess stock from other store that's getting refurbed. I didn't get any but suspect others on here might like to know

Not even that. I've sold wines on Langton's and only question asked was if bottles are cork or screw cap.

Basically looks like there is no way telling if wines were properly stored or kept in the boot of a car at 40 degrees for a week... It's a worry when buying expensive stuff, especially wines that are meant to be kept few more years and may already be off.

Auctions (Langtons, or anything else - even houses) are pretty much caveat emptor. Unless there's been some mispresentation, you're buying it "as is" - I factor in that some % of the stuff I buy at auction is going to end up going down the drain.

The retail stuff that Langtons sells - they do some due diligence on that stuff. And I guess they need to stand behind the product as well. I've got refunds for retail stuff I've purchased that's been no good.

So, you know how many of us had fun with the comments on this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/288626 (credit to @hellohello123)
Well, it turns out that there is a deal buried under that decanter and the 50yo tawny, one just needs to get to it by carefully removing surplus wine from the cornucopia of 69 items in the shopping basket.
So, if you're after a $679 Vintec 30 Bottle Wine Cabinet FREE, all you have to do is leave the following wines in your cart:
Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz Mataro 12 bottles
Penfolds Bin 9 Cabernet Sauvignon 6 bottles
Penfolds Bin 128 Shiraz 2014 12 bottles
Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2014 6 bottles.
Et voila! $1,345.60 of pretty good and not overly overpriced wine and the FREE wine cabinet is yours!

I am drinking this tonight.

As it is special I was wondering if I should open 4-6hrs prior to drinking?
Apologies for attitude of photo, even if I rotated it prior to upload it would not load rotated.

Edit: Did a bit of research. The older the wine, the shorter the opening according to Vinomofo. https://vinomofo.com/vinofiles/when-should-i-decant-a-wine-03d0fe3e
Penfolds does not nominate a time but suggest decanting and even double decanting or replacing the wine back into the now rinsed bottle with the recommendation to not use chlorinated tap water when rinsing.

I might open and decant this one about an hour before we are ready to drink.

I'd definitely decant, but I don't think it needs be opened more than an hour before drinking.

Thanks Ralph. I am going the Penfolds recommendation to double decant and 30-60 minutes open before drinking. Will cool first to around 20C. Have held onto this since 1990. Hope I haven't ruined it.
Whilst pulling it out I also discovered a 389 I paid around $9 for in 1986. Another day.

I'd open it and pop some in a glass. The remainder in the bottle isn't going to be affected much - put the cork back in if you want.
See how the stuff in the glass develops, over the next hour or so. If it starts to plateau or fall over, then it gives you an idea of how the rest will evolve. If it is just opening after and hour, then it's still pretty robust and you can decant the rest of it.

How hot has it been while stored if it needs to be cooled to 20C?

I'd be going with what AC mentioned. 1986 is reputed as a great vintage. I'd imagine at least a couple of hours in the decanter though and would surely need to be decanted for sediment.

Go for 18C, especially if ambient is 24C or more.

...

Penfolds recommend 18-20C. Chilled decanter down to same, decanted. Very little sediment, negligible really. Let it breathe about 40 minutes then decanted back into cleaned bottle per Penfolds suggestion. Transferred to where the action was and poured into Burgundy glasses. I had been concerned it might not have been stored (by me) in ideal conditions over the past 26 years with house moves etc. It was however not spoiled at all. None of our guests had tasted wine of this caliber before so difficult to judge against a standard, for us. It was a very good wine...better than the $80-100 bottles I have been drinking. $600 better? Not sure, but yes, much better.
