Discussion on Cats, Moggies and Felines in general [with Pictures]

I really miss having a kitty but it’s not practical for me to get another - can’t keep a young cat in the backyard (easier with an old lazy cat!) and the dog is a bit unaware of where his feet are these days and 60kg of Dog and a kitten won’t be a good mix!

Every so often I head to my local pet store and give the rescue kitties at their pop up cuddles.

What are your thoughts about cat heated bed? Is it necessary to buy one for an old cat?

We had one for Patsy when she was very old (17 years) as she was living with our daughter who had quite a cold house in Canberra winter. Patsy took to it very well and used to love to curl up in it,
That is such a beautiful puss - if you think it will help then I'd get one, They are very cheap to buy.

Thank you for sharing your insights, I will get one for my cat as well.

We bought one for Barry and put it outside on one of the deck chairs. We turn it on for him to sit on when he goes out and he LOVES it. Rarely do we find him anywhere else, even when it's not properly cold. He has mild arthritis, and we'd just keep him inside, but it's not good for his - or OUR - sanity for him to spend too long indoors. This has really helped with both problems. We keep him inside 90% of the time, and when he's out, he doesn't wander far from the heated chair. (just like I absolutely love my heated car seat!!)

I had one of those self warming beds from Purina - I think it was a S or XS Dog one.

Before that I used one of those discs you heat in the microwave and then pop in their bed.

Well we made a visit to the Vet today. Miss Petal has been off her food and generally very weak for the last 48 hours. Can't jump up to the vanity for running water which she loves to drink. When I lifted her up she was very sensitive but once up drank copious amounts of water.

At the Vet she fought like crazy, but the vet who knows her from home visits knew she wasn't fighting at full strength. An examination and a calming injection allowed the Vet to determine that she'll need to be observed for another day or so. Special food has been provided. That she is drinking water is a good sign.

She didn't cry at all in car which shows she really is sick. She's home now sitting in front of the heater feeling sorry for herself. The heater has remained on so ensure she stays warm. Another big drink of water when she got home and now sleeping well.

I'm not working until Friday so we'll have some quiet time and hopefully she'll get better. Otherwise we'll see if the Vet can make a home visit.

Hi all, so there is a small chance of a SYD to DEN (US) relocation in the works. I just had a quote from Aeropets about transporting our 9 y.o. Ragdoll. Was a little staggered at the cost - $4K. I believe it will be a similar or even larger amount coming back, so that's ...sobering. Can anyone please offer up any advice? Naturally this would be a non-negotiable aspect of the relocation so I either pay up or we don't go.

I think there is also the matter of quarantine for 3 months when you return to Australia.

A colleague of mine has done it recently (MEL to BOS) and just came back with some info on those rabies shots. USD$500 and you need to do them every two years. She advised getting them done in Oz before leaving.

The hospital rang with the worst news. Petal's kidneys had totally failed, she had kidney stones and was unable to urinate.

She was in a large amount of pain and nothing could be done. I was able to go there and while she was sedated cuddle her and say goodbye. I took her favorite toy, a little fluffy thing she played with often, carried around and sometimes slept with. She held Fluffy in her last moments.

A few final scratches on her head and chin and the vet administered the euthanasia while she was in my arms. She looked at me as she passed and her relief from pain was obvious. Lots of tears and I was able to be with her afterwards for as long as I wanted.

She'll be cremated and then I can put her in the window to watch the birds she so desperately wanted to kill. But as an indoor cat I never allowed her to do anything but watch them and dream about it.

She was with me for six years, four months and eight days after being rescued from Lort Smith.

So sorry to hear this, it's so hard and never easy to have to do this, I hope you have lots of nice photos to remember Petal by.

It sounds like she had a good life and adopting a cat is a great thing to do, sorry can't think of anything else to say. :(
