Sorry for the newbie question on vouchers, but I'm not 100% clear on the following:

Can I buy $50 voucher for one person, use it to purchase a flight costing say $1000, not pay the credit card fee, but still pay the remaining $950 on my credit card?

TIA.

Did it myself a few weeks ago, so yes you can.

Did this tonight myself.
Purchased a couple of vouchers, wrote down the Reference numbers and made the bookings paying balance on Credit card without the fee.
Vouchers emailed / received while I was in the middle of booking flights.

I am not sure if anyone had similar experiences with voucher combination.

In my enthusiasm last year, I bought 3 vouchers under two names worth $1,000 each.

I naively thought given the same names, I should be a cinch combining the voucher values to get QF flights (not codeshares) worth more than a single voucher's $1,000.

To my utter surprise and disappointment, two separate CSRs - after some 40 min holding on the phone - came back with a negative reply.

The 1st CSR ended his shift and passed onto his colleague who after extensive checking 'with everyone' replied that it is not possible.

So, for a $2,000 trip we had to fork out another $1,000 cold cash while the 2nd voucher (of $1,000 value) cannot be used to offset that.

Sure, it is a win for Qantas as now we have to cook up another trip worth at least $1,000.

But consumer friendly it isn't !

Maybe I was spoilt with supermarket vouchers where combination is a non issue.

Thoughts ?

PS: had PM'ed Red Roo seeking an explanation

See, for example, #5 and #14 in this thread.

Thank you, resident librarian

Or as Tony Abbot would say, the 'suppository' of AFF information !

I was caught out - fair and simple - by the small print again.

I am not sure I understand.

Why couldnt you transfer one of the vouchers to the other person and then use $1000 each instead of using 1 voucher for $2000 spend?

Vouchers are all in two names and you cannot reduce or increase this number.

What caught me out was that QF only allows ONE voucher per booking.

You cannot combine vouchers into one booking.

I had a situation, after I'd bought a bunch of vouchers and had used a few and had various remaining values on various vouchers, and once, when talking with an agent, she saw all the mess, and "tidied up" a few of the vouchers' remaining values into one... So it seems it 'can' be done...

So there is still a glimmer of hope then.

Well, Tony Abbott was talking about one-man-band Kevin Rudd as the suppository of all wisdom, so I'm guessing it was one of those word-association things we all get from time to time.

One of the conditions of the new vouchers was the ability to change the voucher to another name.

Correct, JohnK

I did take advantage of this rule and changed names from the original voucher.

However, the NUMBER of pax had to stay the same as that shown on the voucher.

Oh well that is disappointing.

Book another getaway....

It was hardly fine print. The rules are clear and are right there in normal print on the purchase page. Did you read them before booking?

The mind has a habit of looking for the info to confirm one's thoughts, not necessarily digesting all the info all the time.

Yes, it is there in B & W - curiously highlighted by yours truly (back then on the last day of the offer, 27th Dec 2012).

So, no worries, some more (enforced) getaway on QF is on the card.

You cannot "win" all the time. Sometimes, the corporate will come out the winner.

True. And no doubt I've forgotten that situation having used about 100 of these vouchers.

I got a phone call in response to the PM sent to Red Roo - Many thanks, RR.

It was explained to me this way:

1) Single-name vouchers can be combined

2) Multiple-name vouchers cannot be combined

This is despite the generic T & C stating that "only one voucher per booking"

So, there is more hope for people with multiple vouchers, but they should be in one name only.

Lesson is next time I would buy only single-name vouchers, far easier to manipulate than multiple-name ones.
