what we need is somewhere that takes Amex for gift cards
Do you have an entertainment book? They do discount wish gift cards and I believe they accept Amex (at least they did when I first looked at it but I don't have an Amex so I can buy anywhere). However, there is a $65 (I think) fee to buy the book in the first place. I was given an entertainment book as a gift. They also do Coles and Kmart and I think Jb Hifi. I don't think they charge for delivery either. Possibly an option if you don't want thousands of dollars worth buying direct from Woolworths. (Sending from my iPhone so please ignore any typos)

I think they must have changed :(. Thanks for the idea. We'll keep searching. The RAA of SA which sells the WW ones also only accepts Visa and MC

  1. Entertainment Members can now order COLES, KMART and LIQUOR Gift Cards
  2. Cards will now be sent to your nominated postal address INACTIVATED. You will need to activate your Gift Card when you receive it, with the activation code included in your Tax Invoice and Activation email.
  3. MASTERCARD and VISA payments accepted only

You can buy Woolies Wish Cards at Woolworth with Amex, and if using Amex Plat Edge card you get the 3 points/$. but you don't get the 5% discount that is offered by some of the "membership" clubs/groups. even if the groups selling the cards at a discount accept Amex, they won't show as "major supermarket" merchants and hence not earn at 3 points/$ on the Edge card.

Do you get EDR points for the purchase of the cards themselves -- or just when they are used for shopping?

Oh well back to the drawing board!

I was also thinking.....Could you purchase a prepaid visa/MasterCard and use that to pay? Most have a nominal fee for the card. Some are reloadable. The woolworths reloadable card cannot be loaded/reloaded with a credit card but what about the gift card version? The everyday giftcard? I think it has a 1K limit. I haven't done the math to work out if the $2.95 fee is worth the extra points. Anyone had any experience with this? Or does this fall under the "gift cards do not accrue points"?

The best trick on 5% off gift cards from Woolies is where you get them for others and keep the points.
Please don't buy $8000 of gift cards to re-sell them inside a Woolies store.
I don't think they would like you doing that.

All good LW, you still will out earn me in the long run since I still don't have a 1.5 card in my wallet :(

Have to do something about that soon...

My Amex has tiered earning dependent on source, but credits to VA (QF taken away last year).

My ANZ Visa (our 2nd use card) is my only direct credit card to QF. At 1:1 for first $2,500pm it's not a world beater

Ok... update on Entertainment cards. I'm having a slowish morning so had time to check. I logged into the entertainment book site and tried a dummy booking for wish gift cards and can now confirm that Amex is a valid payment option for the wish cards only. It seems Coles/Kmart/Liquor and JB Hifi (to Jan 31 2013 only) are Visa and Mastercard only.... Not sure if that helps those Amex card holders....

So the question is whether membergiftcards.com.au is regarded by Amex as "supermarket" spend (it does appear to be owned/run by Woolworths) and attracts 3 pt/$1 spend on Plat Edge, any data points on this?

You can be almost 10cpp 'value' when redeeming with SQ so it feels like I'd be 'losing' a lot going the gift card route.
OT but how do you come to 10cpp 'value' for SQ, I value SQ highly but not that much. Maybe for Suite Savers and the airlines published price this sort of valuation makes sense but for me that confuses "price" and "value". For me the difference is pretty clear, if you aren't prepared to pay the "price" in your own hard earned cash it's pretty clear you actually don't "value" them as much. My "value" therefore of those Suites is probably well under half of the actual price that SQ charge.

You could buy those 5% off Woolies gift cards using a 1.33 net points a dollar Citi Select Visa (provided you can qualify for that card).
That requires a tax assessment of $120k in the application year.
1.33 points net earn is transferable to SQ.

My targeted promos seem to have dried up. I have to say though, the down side of the EDR card for me is the absence of QFF points on the first $30.00. I shop daily ( I like to buy as Fresh as I can) and rarely go over $30.00 so no upside for me , If Woollioes really want me shopping with them, then give me points from $ one

You're right, I should be clearer with terminology. As a base for comparison I use the retail flight price ex. taxes and compare to the cost in points to determine a base value per point which is what I was using before.
Personally, I'd be willing to pay in $ about half J and F class but full Y, so that 9.9cpp is really 5cpp "value."

The merchant code is not in the supermarket list, so credits as 1:1

However if you are cheeky (and keep the purchases modest), they might manually credit you the extra points when you ring up. Trying again soon.

I'd love the one point from the first dollar as well. I only make purchases under $30 at Woolworths if I can get bonus points or a targeted fuel voucher from them. All my other tiny purchases go to Coles.

I sent Jnr#1 off to fill her vehicle yesterday using my EDR card knowing there was 10c off per litre voucher on it. I copped an earfull after work, as no discount came up at all. Tried to log in to my account last night with MAC, and as some have stated, just kept getting an advertisement for a coffee machine on my screen. I eventually got in to my account thru my Iphone app and could see that the 2 doubled up vouchers with the incorrect date had been expired and one of the two 10c vouchers had been redeemed by Jnr#2, but the other voucher had just disappeared.

I sent an email off to EDR customer service at about 7pm asking them to reinstate my 10c voucher and this morning, received an email from Support advising that they have reloaded the voucher.

On this occassion, I'm quite impressed by their quick response.

All my fuel vouchers have increased fro 4c to 8c on my account.
Noticed it advertised in the newspaper today. So I checked my account.

I also noticed this, was unsure why I had so many 8c vouchers, now I know why...

Thanks

I do qualify but struggling to justify the Select with its large annual fee. I do still have the Krysflyer Amex though (given I negotiated a 1/2 price fee) so that gives me 1.5:1 and a Citibusiness card, may look to can those two at annual fee time and rely on just the Select.
