EK521 - B777 Crash landing in DXB

Re: Emirates 777 fire at DXB

It would be hard for me to resist the temptation, once off the plane, to grab the carry-on of the nearest pax and throw it across the Tarmac - provided it did not hinder emergency pax. I'd probable stamp on it for good measure. Of course I don't really know how I'd react but it's infuriating to watch the vision.

Re: Emirates 777 fire at DXB

Grabbing their carry on bags, and taking the time to film too. Maybe that doesn't really add any time, but what if it did? Everyone's trying to make their own reality show.

The guy probably pressed the record button the second something started to go wrong. Prior to smart phone camera's getting out a camera to record an emergency evac was a problem as it was something that could get in the way. These days it's very possible to press a record button and then place the phone back into the top pocket and simply let it record what it can.

Crash investigators are torn between wanting people to be 100% focused on the emergency evac vs having first hand footage to assist them in learning what went right and what went wrong.

Grabbing bags is a problem, perhaps having some sort of lock on overhead bins is in order, have them lock just before landing, and then only unlock just before pulling up to the gate. That said there may be a problem if a person is spending some vital seconds trying to get a locked overhead bin open, the question is then would that be more of a delay than simply letting the person access their bags?

Re: Emerites fire DXB and evacuation procedures

Honestly? I just watched it and it made me furious.
the pure selfishness of these people is beyond understanding.
Also, there didn't seem to be a lot of direction from the cabin crew until the end of the video? that may have just been due to the poor footage?

I imagine all the cabin crew were generally positioned at all of the doors as they were all deployed. Thus just couldn't hear the 'direction' until the pax was close enough to the door.

An incredibly lucky escape by all. Amazingly with these 777 total hull losses and fires (OZ, SQ and now EK) the casualties have been minimal on near full aircraft.

Re: Emirates 777 fire at DXB

Maybe the guy had plenty of time to film, while waiting for the passengers in front get their luggage!

Re: Emirates 777 fire at DXB

While we may be well seasoned travellers who would never dare to not have our passports and other essential documentation on our persons, spare a thought for most of the travelling non-elite who don't see an issue with stashing their passport in a handbag/backpack and throwing it under a seat or in the overhead locker.

Also consider, the things we're taught to take with us as hand carry on planes are fragile, they're personal, they're things we wouldn't want to part with for several days if the bags got lost and they're medications that help us to live if we have chronic conditions.

Thus, when there's an evacuation, it's not surprising that these individuals would reach for their bags.

Few of us have been in the situation we saw unfolding yesterday. Some have though. People take risks all the time. Even just a few KM over the speed limit as if it'll matter anyway when you are stopped at the next traffic light. There's so much anger at their decisions, yet they all survived (onboard). So I would say that those blasting passengers are out of line. You weren't there, you don't know their personal circumstances, what they had with them, what medication they needed to reach for etc...

Good points. We see risk takers all the time. Look at George St in Sydney, people run across in front of busses and cars to save waiting another 20 seconds for the walk signal. Sometimes the consequences are terrible.

Re: Emirates 777 fire at DXB

Um can someone tell what is more odd:

Emirates plane crashes and people want to get their luggage from the overhead lockers or The Age top story is Wayne Carey private life!

I'm calling it the UPDATED safety card will now have LEAVE YOUR OVERHEAD LUGGAGE and leave the bloody plane!

Re: Emirates 777 fire at DXB

Was SQ a hull loss?

Well that would ultimately be a question for the insurers but damage on the SQ incident was contained to a single wing.

In this respect it might be more like QFs A380... Obviously EK 777 is a loss.

I wouldn't grab a large carryon bag from the overhead bin, but I admit that I would definitely take the time to grab my phone and passport from the small backpack I ALWAYS have tucked under the seat in front of me, and tuck them into my pocket or bra (since most women's clothing manufacturers don't think we need pockets). It's pathetic, but I would be completely lost without my phone, and also: how would you call family to let them know you survived the crash? How many phone numbers do most of us know off by heart these days? For me, it's hubby, Mum and work. That's about it.

I WOULD have strong words with anyone stupid enough to try to get theirs down who might be in between me and the exit.

If I saw an aircraft fire I would race over and throw my phone into it I think.

Seat pocket, maybe, you probably can put your phone in your bra before the need to evacuate, but to risk your life or someone else's for a 'thing' does amaze me.

Re: Emirates 777 fire at DXB

I usually have my passport and phone in my pocket. Occasionally, the landing immigration/quarantine card would be there with my passport as well, although I definitely won't have anything to declare on my entry in such situations.

Does the safety video emphasise the "leave your carry on" message?

Several news video clips interviewing passengers from that flight with their carry ons

As part of my personal preparation for landing, I take my wallet passport from overhead and phone and have it on my person.

Some certainly do, don't remember if the EK one does or not.

Re: Emerites fire DXB and evacuation procedures

Just watched video footage taken by pax during evacuation with cabin filled with smoke etc, did you see the large number of passengers going to overhead bins for their carry on luggage (in the smoke)
How would you feel if you were furthest from an exit and others were opening bins to get the bags?

Assume you are referring to this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YxCyeaOVOU

To be honest I think those pax where the furtherst from the exit - they appeared to be about the last to evacuate from their section, so I suspect the time they had waiting for those in front made them reach for bags etc..
There was some 'clear' instructions from crew but that came later.
