Re: Emirates 777 fire at DXB

Cant put your phone in your bra, you need it to stream the video to twitter / youtube / facebook

Saw a news report earlier this week about flash flooding on the East Coast of the US. Footage showed a young woman being rescued from her car in the raging torrent by a human chain. She had her phone in her mouth. Says something about priorities

Re: Emerites fire DXB and evacuation procedures

Luggage-retrieval aside, the thing that struck me watching this video is how long two minutes stretches when you're waiting to get to an exit and the cabin is filling with smoke. Scary.

Re: Emerites fire DXB and evacuation procedures

Pausing that video at about 1.22 also shows very small fire on left engine,
and also that the left emergency slide aft of the wing has failed to deploy properly - possibly due to strong winds?

Timing wise the evac is called over the PA at 0.05 and the pax filming (who appears to be one of the last on board) is on the slide at 1.17 (72 seconds since evacuate order) in a part of the cabin with exits impeded

Seemed to be a bit of pushing and shoving whilst on board (but not a huge amount), was I also right in thinking that there seemed a bit of "bunching" of passengers at the bottom of the slide? Or is it just the way it appears from the angle that its shot? Difficult to tell.

Re: Emerites fire DXB and evacuation procedures

I'd be pushing and shoving, yelling and cussing at those idiots getting stuff from the overheads.

Even if I reckon there were cultural issues at play.

Re: Emerites fire DXB and evacuation procedures

I am on the fence on the whole bag thing.

I understand for safety, that leaving bags can mean more people have a chance to escape, especially with rolling bags etc.

However my carry on bag is a strapped back pack, and contains mainly just my laptop, and I would be lost and in a heartache of problems if I lost my laptop.

well, that makes it alright then:rolleyes:. we wouldnt want others to die in vein, if your actions affect others, as long as you are spared the heartache of problems if you lost your laptop:shock::evil:.
making excuses to justify your actions regardless of how it could affect others...classically self centered:rolleyes:

Laptops can be replaced, and with cloud/remote access there is no reason why you will need to bring the laptop with you.

So what you are saying is the inconvenience of not having your laptop justifies the person in row 40 who possibly loses his life, because you delayed the evacuation by 2 seconds?

Laptops can be replaced...

It all depends, if you have that backpack immediately to hand and are moving immediately - all good. If you have to open the overhead and root around to find the backpack (like in the video) - then I'm shoving you in the back, and yelling and cussing at you.

Re: Emerites fire DXB and evacuation procedures

If you are reaching up to the overhead for luggage I'm coming straight through you ! No if's or buts.

Laptops can be replaced - yes - but not my laptop, as they don't make them any more.

I refuse to use the cloud for anything - and have seen clouds delete or corrupt data too many times to be far from convinced they are safe today.

I have also had back up HDD fail, where as never on my laptop/PC.

This may come across as blunt, but that's a woeful justification of what is a very selfish action. I'm sorry but that still isn't an excuse.

I can see that the luggage point has been well made but another point has arisen from the on site reports and that is people trying to get out without shoes on!!!!!!! Let me get this right , the plane was landing and people still were barefoot ? Well unless I think I can lift or throw you over the hot metal you are on your own! IMO take offs and landings are the most dangerous times ,usually, in flight so when I see people rushing to the toilets before the plane take off to put pj's on or taking shoes off and putting them away I shake my head. Ok each to their own but if people actually thought about what they were about to do I'm sure more would rethink it.

Is this attitude some sort of joke, not funny. If someone pushes you to the floor to walk over the top I'm sure you'll have enough time to evacuate.

Re: Emerites fire DXB and evacuation procedures

Honestly? I just watched it and it made me furious.
the pure selfishness of these people is beyond understanding.
Also, there didn't seem to be a lot of direction from the cabin crew until the end of the video? that may have just been due to the poor footage?

this is the thing... it may appear to you as being 'selfish', but I'm not actually sure it is an intentional act to slow the evacuation of the aircraft. They're not thinking properly, but that doesn't mean intentionally being selfish. I think there needs to be some more psychology around this to try and deal with the issue, rather than getting mad.

Totally agree. We've seen it again and again, and no amount of soapbox posturing is going to stop it. Darwin Awards come to mind. The reality is it will happen, and so far everyone's been lucky - it does have the potential to cost lives. Someone needs, especially now we are in the "Me Me Me" age, to identify reasons for the issue and ways to tackle it.

The psychology is people think it will only take me 5 seconds to grab my bag with my all important phone or laptop, but when many people take 5 seconds by 300 people is 25 mins. So many people also must not grab their bags. If you're in a plane crash landing surely you are focused on the imediate things that matter (and to some even on this board their phone and laptop matter more).

Re: Emerites fire DXB and evacuation procedures

The psychology is unavoidable. That's why a good verbal kick up the backside is required to get people to focus on the real problem.
Ignoring the sexist stereotype - something equivalent to the slap in the face for the screaming lady in 1950s movies.
