Everyday Rewards Qantas Credit Card

Unfortunately I was doing some postgrad studies the last 2 years = no tax returns. :( However I do pay my current credit card on time and for the last 6 years. Oh I could have at least 100k QFF points if I switched earlier! A bit off topic, how do pensioners get new cards?

That is a big difficulty I have when I do pro bono work with widows. Insufficient income is a problem for getting the best credit cards.
Now what course are you doing??
I did Valuation and then Play Chess and Speed Reading after my two qualifications.
Of course Play Chess was better than anything.

with many of us coming to the end of the second year with this card, what's everyone's opinion...? Ask for a fee wavier or not...?

Asked last year and was given a wavier, this year I'm on the fence weather I ask or not... Good value with this card, however a 5 min call to them can be worthwhile in saving $89 to put towards a nice 389 or 407

I've been thinking the same. I've need to come up with a reason - last year was Mrs DeKa could sign up fee free...

I would still like to find out if anybody has cancelled and re-applied to harvest a second sign-on bonus?

All I can offer is the data point that I called to cancel in November last year (after not putting much through the card) and they let me go. Currently I can still log in to the portal and see my account as if it is still open (but the card certainly doesn't work) I'm not sure if this is usual for HSBC / EDR, but it seems to me it would make getting a new sign on bonus less likely as it would appear I'm already a customer.

I have been refused twice for this card...sniff
I don't seem to have much luck with HSBC
Lordy if only they knew what I put through credit cards and what a good risk I am
Oh well, their loss
Wait a few months and try again I guess

Yeah, I got refused twice too and when I applied for the NAB platinum card I got approved straight away, cards arrived 4 days later and the credit limit is twice the minimum of the EDR card. Something in their computer checking system didn't like me either but obviously doesn't concern NAB

If you were refused by NAB, AMEX or HSBC then the rejection will tell you why. If it just says it was of because of lending criteria then it is likely a servisibility or asset issue.

However if it was because of your credit file it will say something like "Our decision was based in whole or in part on information contained your credit file held by Veda Advantage"

I know as I have had issues with this same thing, i.e. no defaults or judgements, no other credit at the time, plant of capacity but still rejected. As I dug deeper I soon discovered that any more than 6 credit enquiries per year starts sending alarm bells ringing. 18 in 3 years will cause an auto rejection….

I don't think people realise just how fragile their credit files are with regards to applications…

I received a waiver last year, but when requesting this year it was a no-go. My spend was down this year though which may have contributed to the rejection.

Did you mention that the current offerings of 16k in points promo suggests that without a waiver, it would make sense for you to cancel your card and have your partner apply for the bonus (even if you don't have a partner, this would give them a clear idea that the waiver would actually cost them less than a new application)

Also you mentioned a lower spend, if its really low then I can see why the waiver would be rejected, but if your spend is >25k p.a then I think you have a good chance of a waiver

That is what we're going to do. Hopefully come Feb/March next year there is a similar points offer. I'm not willing to pay for this card given the atrocious customer service I recently had in trying to replace a damaged card (ie cancelling the card without notifying us, sending a card with a completely different EDR number, not covering d/debit dishonour fees as promised, saying that the card would be sent next business day and then not receiving it 3 weeks later, wanting to then slug us for express post fees etc etc).

I've had this card 6 or 7 weeks now, all going well. Quite happy with it. Had it blocked once for a TACA Panama transaction but I rang and it was unblocked very quickly... polite customer service rep on the phone. I have made a couple of other TACA transactions since and nothing wrong with it. I received by 16,000 bonus plus usual monthly spend points in my QFF account a couple of days after the first statement was issued. I've been using it for almost every daily transaction and made loads of points already.

I must agree. Their customer service is polite and reasonably knowledgeable for the few services (very few ) that the card offers. I even had them call me a few days after I had a protracted problem to see how I felt about the resolution. It was a chance for me to get a lot off my chest, and I told them, because the card is, after all, a "Platinum".

But for me, ultimately, its a grocery type card and can't be relied upon.

- Transactions within the country can be refused for no explainable reason (I've had box office theatre ticket purchases refused in SYD), not fixable, had to use different payment method.
- Overseas transactions seem to often get blocked, with no resolution available, this happened to me recently for transactions in two different countries ... no resolution possible in the end, had to use a different payment method in both cases.
- The card can slip into a suspended state very easily, particularly following a blocked transaction attempt. The WoW call centre however is not open 24x7 so you can be left dangling.

Its fine for what it is. A low end card, despite being "platinum" earning pretty competitive points rates for a very low annual premium. But I hunt for a competitive real Platinum style Mastercard/Visa with proper back of office support. When things go wrong at a point of sale, I want to speak to someone and get a resolution, as with Amex for example.

The fact I'm even pulling a mastercard from my wallet already means that Amex isn't accepted, so payment options are limited, really don't need the card failing me at that point.

This is a very good point. I've had issues with a few cards in this respect recently. I had my Virgin Money card fail, then EDR failed, with my CBA Diamond MC working in the end (which is least preferred option due to the abysmal earn rate). I always use Amex before any of them, and it's disappointing that there are so many problems. Both these cards that failed worked elsewhere later the same day.
