I remember when I was a young post grad there was this guy on our rugby team called Tugga. Tugga had mate called Brooksie, a short guy who also had a short leg which meant he never ran straight and made tackling him a challenge. Anyway, Tugga was an expert on everything under the sun and just couldn't stand anyone else on the team expressing an opinion on something without him commenting or having the last word to set them straight. Tugga just knew it all and couldnt understand why people rolled their eyes instead of just shutting up and listening to him. Everywhere Tugga went, little Brooksie was always there to back him up, quick with an affirmation or a raucous laugh at his jokes. Anyway, was in Woolies yesterday and bugger me there was Tugga and Brooksie at the empty toilet paper aisle and Tugga was instructing Brooksie on the ins and outs of Corona virus avoidance strategies. Some things never change... 😉🧻🧻

Check these out - they are the numbers/timeline of known cases of Corona for France, Germany, and Spain. (source is Wikipedia)

To me they are remarkably similar, with an effective doubling of cases every two days. Whether this correlates more with increased real numbers or with increased testing, who knows yet?

I reckon that the numbers of infected people in Australia, specifically Melbourne, will rapidly increase next week with this weekend's Grand Prix.

I quite like the Johns Hopkins site for numbers - but. you know I am over it now. The media hype is jus too much and the lack of any coherent and authoritative leadership in this country (without thinking about other places) means I take my own precautions but switch off most of the time. All this talk of containment is pointless IMO - it's a matter of deal with it as it's here.

Agree. There is no one consistent clear leadership statement. We were listening to Sky News and there was a Business Leader discussing it very rationally and matter of fact. Shame no one is listening.

Unfortunately there are so many stakes in play here that to decipher any sort of reality is extremely difficult. I grasp "numbers" fairly well, certainly above average, and I cannot really get a hold of what the reality is. The number one statistic that is bandied in the media is "number of confirmed cases" - which is essentially drivel without knowing how many and who were actually tested, and how accurate are those specific tests. There are countries (Italy maybe?) where it appears they are only testing people near death - hence their high mortality ratio. A country such as Sth Korea who is doing very many tests shows a lower infection/mortality rate. Then there is dear old China, who appear to have taken the decision to not test/advise of any more info this month - their stats have gone into a bizarre area that is sheerly impossible. Unless on the 1st of March they happenned to not only find a perfect cure/vaccine, but also managed to miraculously suplly this overnight to the most populous nation on earth...

To me, the most surprising thing has been the USA. The world's most wealthy nation. They are only just starting to take this thing seriously.

Agree - our useless government leaders can’t seem to sing from the same hymn book to save their lives.

Contradictory and confusing messaging from Feds and States. The AMA and CMO are wringing their hands In despair begging for one strong simple line of communications from them (or just shut up). Someone need to smack some heads together!

Even we are rather confused now about symptoms and when to get tested. Overseas travel is a flag but with domestic plane travel and community spread, anything is up for grabs. And we can’t simply isolate ourselves for every cough we might experience when a cough might be a sign - or not!

"Self isolation" is a beautiful concept - not just for COVID19 but for myriad other ailments. But in a country where so many workers are casual and have no sick leave or other entitlements, the concept of voluntary isolation is rubbish.

Yes. Understood. What else can we say or do though?

maybe, just maybe, actually get out of our decade's old traditional thought boxes, and try some thoughtful innovation? Simple things - like acknowledging that forcing peope into close contact is what super-drives such epidemics - so look at all the ways we can minimize this. Have universities allow/promote online content.

But in reality as long as there are wet markets in areas that are densely occupied by people and animals there will always be a new virus. The rest just contributes to the spread.

Pushka, it is not IMHO about wet markets. It is the perennial course of nature to take down exploding populations. people have been clamouring about Climate Change for years now, but avoiding the far more explosive reality about sheer population numbers. Any organism that manages to super-populate tends to get an eventual "correction" by dear old mother nature....

For those that are knocking Government this thread explains what is going on.Sorry it is very long.
