Why can't train and bus timetables align? Yesterday I had the joy of seeing the bus I needed drive off as my train pulled into the station, and then had to wait another 40 minutes.

On our joyful train experience even at the small stations we stopped at a bus had just arrived for pax who wanted to board the train and stayed for those getting off and wanting a bus.
I don't think Australia has the culture to replicate the Japanese way.

In 2011 in the Czech Republic we travelled by bus from Telc to Prague-one transfer involved was 3 minutes & also involved different companies-as per our experience throughout Czech Republic the public transport network was amazing. Some countries just seem to be able to do it

When I saw the OP I also thought of the contrast with my own experiences in Prague. Trains, trams and buses all well integrated.

I don't think anywhere in the English speaking world has the culture to do that. Japan considers anything more then 2 minutes later to be unacceptable and will give notes to people who are late to work due to a train delay. Many western nations consider transport 15 minutes late to be just fine.

A Sydney bus timetable is a work of fiction. Some buses in the timetable simply don't exist. Now with the George Street screw up, it can take an hour to travel 5km.

55 years ago the Sydney bus timetable was accurate.Back in the day of a 6th class excursion to the water research station at North Manly our bus broke down. The teacher was flummoxed but we had a Rainman fellow who knew all the Sydney train and bus timetables so was able to say the Dee Why to Manly via North Manly bus was due in 5 minutes but allowing 2 minutes we should be right as it should take us 6 minutes to get to the nearest stop-he was spot on.

I think I was in 6th class at Chatswood public at the same time. Had to catch the train from St Leonards to Chatswood every day.

I was actually in 6th class in 1958 with Mr.Dove as our teacher.May be a very small world.

Vince Dove. I think my mother went through Teachers' College with him. I was in 5th Class in 1958 having arrived from Neutral Bay. We had Kevin Bruce as a teacher. Interesting catching a train to school.

Victorian Government to fund the Metro underground project without any help from the federal government.

Victoria will go it alone and fund the $10.9 billion Melbourne Metro rail project, Treasurer Tim Pallas has declared in his second state budget. The big ticket item in Wednesday's state budget is a further $2.9 billion for the nine kilometre rail tunnel between Kensington, under the city, to South Yarra, over the next four years, with a commitment to fund it beyond the forward estimates.

In a politically charged budget, Mr Pallas and Premier Daniel Andrews antagonised the Turnbull government over public transport funding and repeated its complaint that Victoria received just 9 per cent of federal infrastructure funding.

"I'm not sure the federal government knows where Victoria is, certainly their allocations don't seem to give much confidence that they do," Mr Pallas said.

Mr Pallas, whose first budget included $1.5 billion for the rail project, has rejected federal offers of loans to fund the project, calling for a partnership with the Commonwealth instead to fund the project.
Mr Pallas' advice to Mr Turnbull was "stop pretending you are a merchant banker and start pretending to be a prime minister".
"While there was hope that Mr Turnbull would support the project, it is now evident that he is unwilling or incapable of doing so," Mr Pallas said.
"We just can't wait. We are deadly serious about delivering this project, and we will deliver it, with or without the federal government."

It could be said they are paying for it themselves due to the overly generous share they get from WAs GST revenue...

I think you'll find that Victoria only keeps ~90% of the GST revenue it generates.

Ahhh - the health diet of the 50s. We bought a term train pass for one shilling. Pretty good value compared to the 6d bus fare. You probably walked off the calories and carbs of the cream bun. As for being young - I still am (in the head) but time catches up with us all!

Back to the days of the Wild West and the railroad speculators? A few of the richest men ever made their piles that way. I think we might be a 150 years late though.
