Gift Cards at Supermarkets

The last gift cards I bought through the Entertainment Book link were purchased in May. Not sure what the current point earn is.

No worries - I'm gonna do a test run today. Will report back.

This has probably been covered… but If i buy from the woolworths "everydaygiftcards.com.au" website, does this classify as a "supermarket" purchase with Amex?

I don't pay with an AMEX, but for me, that website shows up as EVERYDAY GIFT CARDS BELLA VISTA AUS EVERYDAY GIFT CARDS BELLA VISTA AUS
This doesn't reflect anything to do with Woolworths, or Supermarket so I doubt you'd get multiple points per dollar.

It *used* to show up as Woolworths Limited. Then, you may have earned multiples.

Ok, did a test run yesterday and I can confirm that I got 3 points per $.

Just to clarify, I purchased through the Entertainment Book link. The transaction showed up as: MEMBER GIFT CARDS WEBSITE BELLA VISTA 2153 AUSTRALIA

I have no idea how this got attributed to spending at a "Supermarket", but there you go!

BTW, the cards are Wish Gift Cards - accepted in Dan Murphy's, BWS, Big W, Dick Smith, Caltex, Masters and Thomas Dux, as well as Woolies.

Coles cut out of the Entertainment Book so National Seniors are still on. Unfortunately they charge about $35 on $1900 so the saving is a modest $65 per $2000.

Mentioned earlier I can still get Coles cards through the Ambassador Card program (I have that through my membership of Professionals Australia). Not sure when that will run out.

They are honouring existing supply contracts.

Belle Vista is where the Woolworth's Corporate head office is in Sydney. It is a suburb up in the Hills district.

I don't think merchants categorise themselves from the perspective of points earn rate. In any case, just being a supermarket isn't enough to qualify for 3 pts/$ - for example transactions at my local Foodworks supermarket earn only 1 pt per $. According to the Amex Plat Edge T&Cs, only transactions at specific "major" supermarkets earn 3 pts per $.

So my guess is either Amex somehow recognises "Member Gift Cards" as Woolies. As I mentioned previously, it's somewhat surprising, as the Woolies-owned BWS in my local Woolies, is NOT recognised as Woolies!! Anyway, whatever the explanation, I'm not complaining!

This is literally what Amex said to me:

I would like to share that American Express categorizes a merchant as they present themselves to our database. It is upon their discretion as to how they want to classify themselves. If a merchant classifies itself as hotel for travel accommodation and it has a restaurant under its premises, the transactions are presented to us in the category of a Hotel.

So their categorisation does have a direct relationship to points earn. As you mention, the example you use is because supermarkets is restricted to the merchants listed by Amex, and obviously WISH gift cards is by Woolworths.

Indeed you may, but I don't have an entertainment book and do have an RACQ membership, so I use RACQ to purchase my 5% discounted Wish Cards.
