Gift Cards at Supermarkets

This thread is getting off topic. It is about gift cards you can buy at supermarkets, not gift cards you buy to spend at supermarkets.
It's in the AMEX section, as it's good to be able to buy say Rebel Sport, JB Hifi or Bunnings gift cards at a supermarket, earn your 2 or 3x points per dollar on spend which would otherwise earn 1 point per dollar or less.

There is a strong link though. You can buy the Wish Gift cards using your Amex at a discount and then use those to buy the supermarket gift cards for the discount.

Ah, a thread naz_. I think that's the nature of these type of forums really, the discussions tends to deviate somewhat from the original theme over time. Will be interested to see if anyway accedes to your request.

Went to coles yesterday needing $400 of JB HiFi for a cheap dishwasher. Picked them up and got my 4 points per $ (local champion) and for the hell of it tacked on a $50 prepaid visa ($5.95 load fee). This all went through on my amex so yes you can be lucky and have the visa loaded on your AMEX. Think the limit is $100 load on the prepaid so take a helluva lot of them for your tax. Still if I get 4 points and value them at $0.05 per point it may be worth it. Comments anyone

The local champion is at my local Coles, so when I buy at Coles I get the normal supermarket 3 points plus additional 1. If I value at $0.05 per point this gives me a 20% return per $ spent on groceries, petrol (cause I buy Coles Myer gift cards), booze (again the Coles Myer gift cards) and Restaurants (gift card).
I am trying to get together in the next year another 200k of frequent flyer points so that I can take the wife to Paris for our wedding anniversary. The above should give me 100k plus MR with Amex in the year.
If I can add my ATO bill in via purchasing visa gift cards the following is my estimate:
Buy $200 of visa every week from Coles (800 MR points at cost of $11.90 ). Drip feed the ATO at $796.66 every 4 weeks (ATO visa card cost is 0.42%). Therefore for four weeks get 3200 MR points at a cost of $50.94, works out at $0.016 per point.
If I paid my ATO by Amex I am charged at 1.45% and only make 0.5 MR points per $. So for $800 it costs me $11.60 fees for 400 points (= $0.029 per point).
I can also use these visa cards to pay my rates, insurances and utilities.

Can anyone see any failings in my logic here. By the way I am drinking a cup of coffee using the trial visa card I bought yesterday and enjoying it while dreaming of Paris lol.

I think other threads have outlined that with the right card and performed in the right way you can get 3pts on Wish Giftcards, am therefore unsure what higher supermarket earning you are referring to. Please advise because I'm keen to understand how I can get more than 3 pts per dollar (particularly with a 5% discount thrown in)? Agree this is only WW if thats your point.

Ooh, that sucks. I think it might be because that site falls under the "Woolworths Money" brand, which is probably run as a separate entity to the supermarkets. Whereas the Entertainment Book one seems to be run out of their head office in Bella Vista. Just a guess.

All the gift cards come out of Bella Vista. On the odd occasion I have rung up to check on a delivery they always ask me whether it is the Ent Book or Auto Club.

Not so tenuous. I buy a Wish Card through RACQ for 5% discount and earn 3 Amex MR points per $. Then I use that Wish Card at a Woolworths Supermarket (or Big-W for that matter) to purchase a Myer, JB HiFi, iTunes or any other gift card, thereby ultimately purchasing for 5% discount and earning 3 MR points per $ for the overall process - best of both worlds with discount and maximum points earning.

The main fail I can see in your logic is valuing at 5c/points. Which program are you transferring to to ascribe that much value?

Racq is classed as a supermarket? Afaik raa don't accept Amex.

Exactly, that was the point that I was trying to make about a strong link.
