GOOD NEWS! Krisflyer Miles to be extended until 2023 [previously April 2022]

Why ask them to book an accounting loss at an already difficult time when they’ve been generous with their extensions already?

I am inclined to agree. If they do make that change the it is likely to happen organically - right now they would just reply by saying that they have announced a series of extensions and other measures to support loyal customers during the current uncertain times.

Why is it an accounting loss?

Yes, it would stop them being able to write-off the liability for points that expire once Covid-19 ends (in how many years?) BUT how much negative sentiment does the expiry or being forced to pay to extend the life of KFMs create?

Judging by the many posts up-thread - expiry & paying generate much negative sentiment for SIA.

Effectively though, for those people who's KFMs would have otherwise have expired (due to low balances or inability/apathy) would still not use them so SIA effectively continues to benefit from the cash flow benefit & does not create a taxable item.

For those of the more eager KFM owners who in normal times DO use their KFMs as soon as possible - it will only generate a positive sentiment.

Realistically - once the 'new normal' eventuates (a bit like how the world has permanently changed post 911) - will anybody here be expecting NOT to have used their points within a rolling three year period?

All our balances were due to disappear (bar 237 KFMs) in July 2020, after previously having been wiped out in May 2017 on F returns to Europe, this time on F returns to NY via Frankfurt.

But it isn't a three year rolling period when we get back to normal. The extensions are for six months at a time. When SQ decides to stop doing these extensions we may not be back to normal, and people will have somewhere between six and zero months on large amounts of their points.

And even for new points earn in Covid normal, I would expect many members would not accumulate enough points within three years to redeem for flights - so would be condemned to redeeming in KrisShop for toasters or losing their balances altogether.

so from that link,
for regular Kris miles, anything expiring in 2022 will be extended by 6 months, so the earliest anyones miles are going to expire is 1st july 2023, if this is the case, thats great!!
For those expiring in July 2022 -> Jan 2023 would be the earliest

How about a concerted campaign (starting from AFF) where everybody sends SIA an email requesting an end to the 3 year life on KFMs to generate substantial goodwill which will only encourage greater use of SIA going forward.

If we can get at least in the low hundreds - given all the bad news & complaints they will be receiving over call centre changes etc - it may become 'a great idea' from their marketing team...

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Now what would be the best email address to use, or would their FB page & email be a better way to go?
Availability will go down the toilet I feel if that happens, like Qantas

Didn't Cathay availability suffer once they removed the 3yr rule

I don't see KF getting rid of the 3 years rule. After all, what other alternatives are there that compare to KF? Other *A miles cannot be used to redeem long haul J/F SQ flights. SQ is still one of the best airlines in the world. If anyone hates the 3-year rule so much, they would have already jumped ship to somewhere else.

CX removed the 3-year rule since COVID started but it makes little difference as they hardly fly anywhere these days. I would not be surprised if CA (Air China) buys CX outright and convert it to Phoenix Miles instead.

I'm no economist, but the thing most likely to impact on availability would be the ease with which KF miles can be earned. SQ has a huge network that carries a lot of non-Singaporean passengers through SIN but not necessarily with SIN as an endpoint. Singapore is small and does not have a domestic network, it has a smallish population relative to the number of SQ flights and it has been difficult for non-Singaporeans to earn KF miles through competitive credit card earn rates. Therefore, availability is likely to be high relative to the number of active KF members. But if they make KF miles more attainable for overseas members then could that ratio change quickly?

If your points now expire in June 2022, you will be able to book for almost 12 months out.

So as you are nervous about 2022, you can book some flights for the first half of 2023.
My points expired in December, so now July. You can book 8 months head? Which is March, literally the worse time to travel. I assume all flights, including return have to be within this month?

I'm hoping for a further extension, I can visit friends in Boston, and Seattle June-August 2023.

You can book a ticket for anybody btw. If you have a work colleague or a friend of a friend then you may be able to book flights that they were intending to pay for - if you can work out a suitable saving for them....
Literally no one is traveling internationally that I know unfortunately.

There we go.

Singapore Airlines Extends PPS Club And KrisFlyer Elite Statuses For Third Year, And Enhances Programme Benefits

13 Jan 2022 - Singapore Airlines (SIA) is extending PPS Club and KrisFlyer Elite statuses, rolling over Elite miles, pausing the expiration of miles in 2022, and introducing new programme benefits that further rewards its loyal members.

Extension of PPS Club and KrisFlyer Elite Memberships, Rollover of Elite Miles

All PPS Club and KrisFlyer Elite statuses that are due to expire between March 2022 and February 2023 will be automatically extended for another year1. This supports our members, who have been unable to fly as before due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and follows a similar extension in 2020 and 2021.

Elite miles earned by KrisFlyer Elite members, in the 12 months prior to the latest extension, will be credited back into their accounts after the extension. Elite miles earned during the previous membership qualification cycle will also count towards their requalification in the March 2023 to February 2024 cycle.

Extension of KrisFlyer Miles, PPS Rewards and KrisFlyer Milestone Rewards

KrisFlyer miles that expire in 2022 will be automatically extended by six months at a time, at the end of each month2.

Rewards earned from the PPS Rewards and KrisFlyer Milestone Rewards3 that are due to expire in 2022 will be extended to 31 December 2022. This offers members greater flexibility in utilising the rewards earned from flying with SIA.

(see link above for more)
Does this mean my points that are expiring in July with a 6 month extension will get a further 6 month extension?

If your points were due to expire in December 2021 and were extended for 6 months, they would now be due to expire in June 2022. They will then be extended until December 2022. They will then be extended until June 2023. Who knows whether they would then be extended further. You can book travel almost a year in advance - it varied by airline - so that would enable you to book travel almost up until June 2024.

If your points are in fact going to expire in July 2022 they will be extended until January 2023. That would allow you to book for travel for any time in 2023. I suspect things will still be cray-cray through 2022 so I would expect the points to be extended further but you can't guarantee it.

In any case, if your points are due to expire you are allowed one shot at paying for a 6 month extension (12 if you have Elite status) - but this is not possible for miles that have already had an extension (and I assume, but it is not stated anywhere, that the automatic Covid extensions do not preclude a future paid extension).

Yes people who expire in July have lucked out unfortunately!

That's amazing news

My best mate in Seattle is having a baby in March, and another mate who now lives in Boston has a 1 year old.

They want me there around August 2023, so I was thinking Europe first.

I have nearly 400k pts, so around the world it is tho I have no idea how to book it all! This thread has been super helpful, thank you everyone.

I'm 100% they'll include you in the extension

They will be extended to January 2023 which will work for @Mynameislucluc. I would bet there will be further extensions announced towards the end of 2022 because I don't think travel is going to normalise any time soon. But at some point the automatic extensions will stop, and that stop may not be announced but just become apparent when points start to expire. We are sailing in uncharted waters.

Hopefully not a stupid question but when making a booking using KF miles would the oldest points in the members account be used first?

It may be my imagination but seems like no SAVER award exist for travel between Singapore and Sydney. That means only option would be to use ADVANTAGE
