Q2. If you look at the various ASA threads on this forum, the idea is NOT to pay huge amounts of points on ASAs. If you book a so called ASA on line, then yes, you will get ripped off. But it is possible to book ASAs in U class by phoning Qantas. These price out at at (essentially) the same points cost as classics and only slightly more money. Hence the great interest.

The dollar cost is more than slightly more. Same flights ADL-SYD-ADL, same pouts cost the cash co-pay is maybe $80 or $160 for a classic and $300 for a JASA. It's a fairly similar increase on other routes I've looked at.

7 minutes on hold before call answered, total time taken 25mins as the Qantas "system" was showing less availability than what I could see on the web

Platinum can have extra availability online. The phone agents, I think, see the normal availability. I had one say they couldn't see the same as me but said they'd get the seat as I have more available classic awards. (Or something like that) I think they might have checked something.

Standard markup for a 24,000-point one-way flight like SYD-ADL is $107.00.

I'm impressed, not so much at the value but the ability to find a P seat SYD-DXB! I have found a SYD-LHR but never a DXB no matter how hard I try, even the magical 330 days out

I've been lucky it seems, but a quick look now and I found SYD-DXB and DXB-SYD P class for March and May, but that is in the area of dates I needed originally.

i'm not sure of the etiquette with regards to posting of actual dates.

Edit to add: Just noticed charge of 3,500 x 2 so will need to ring and get it reversed.

After reading this I checked my account and it seems i also got hit with 3,500 points for the four I booked on NYE as well. Thanks for the reminder.

(was surprised that the agent let me pay as little as 16k points as the classic award booked via the web using the same route costs 24k points + taxes)

That's the thing about xASA's (which makes some quite interesting) the minimum points is based on GCM distiance for the Origin-Destination; CBR-BNE is 591 miles, so zone 1. CBR-xSYD-BNE is 616 miles so Zone 2 for a classic.

.......I happened to ask "Are they (the MASA's) coming back to the website booking system?" The answer was a firm "nope - definitely not, the ASAs were meant to be gone after Points+Pay was introduced but too many WPs kicked up a fuss so now we only really do this for 'you guys' - people who ring up and know what they are asking for..."......................

Flight has now posted following a call, but still waiting for numbers two and three on that ticket. And then the doubles hopefully not too long after.

Just made my 2nd ever successful booking (posted details in the other thread).

The operator initially instructed me to do it via the web. I advised no-can-do any more and directed him to the cheat sheet. He then said there was a lot of info and politely asked if I'd mind if he read the sheet. I gave him all the time in the world. I was his first booking this way.

He then walked through it step by step. He mentioned that the instructions were very specific and that they must be followed to the letter. It then brought up screens he didn't normally see. Through the process I advised I'd be making a co-payment and reducing the points needed. I also checked there'd be no booking fee which he stated would be waived. He also referred to the booking be a "commercial" booking and as such needing to abide by fare rules etc.

Anyways, 17 mins later we had our booking done. 20 mins later the e-ticket was in my inbox and points deducted from my account.

Success!

We need to keep the dream alive.

JASA flown today, activity statement says "classic award", zero points, zero SCs. (And yes, when it was booked activity statement said "any seat award.")

Oh well, another phone call to Qantas required. *sigh*

You would think that with what is, essentially, an automated process, it wouldn't stuff up quite as much.
