Well TBH I come to AFF for travel related matters - I guess we are all different huh - and the echo continues

Nope no interest in this back and forth and AFFers kicking each other because they hold differing views - so unproductive and devalues AFF - my opinion obviously - but clearly others seem to enjoy such antics

CE ... disappointed you don't discriminate between 'AFFers kicking each other' and having a rational debate in type. It is possible. But happy to be sharing this 'echo chamber' with you today, :)

What a dispiriting Thread... Just so many myopic opinions and people droning on about their opinion of an important subject. I agree with 'Cruiser Elite' - there are plenty of other forums for this discussion whatever your point of view. Maybe there is a middle ground that can be rationally discussed without getting into point scoring and mud throwing.

Maybe we can agree that coal, gas and oil will continue to be burnt for the foreseeable future and, as frequent flyers, we will continue to take flights for business or pleasure but we may restrict unnecessary status or mileage runs. We may look to off-set the carbon we burn while flying thereby acknowledging that there has been some warming of the planet causing an increasing number of catastrophic natural events over the past several years.

Or we can just sit in our silos throwing verbal barbs at each other. I'd rather read about the joys of travelling and enjoying the experience when I can afford it.

Just my opinion.

I don't get the complaints here , contentious ot threads form a very very small part of aff content.
Some enjoy the repartee, why deny them the fun ?
Sadly one side have frightened off the opposition so the threads are now quite boring.
I note that the prime drivers of the thread also contribute far more on topic content than most naysayers.

Not sure why I am bothering as the believers are converted no matter what….
Science has mud all over it's reputation on global warming

A magnificent 7 international scientists repeated experiments in eight JCU studies on the effect of climate change on coral reef fish to see if they were correct.

They found 100% failure. None of the findings of JCU's original eight studies were found to be correct.
http://joannenova.com.au/…/busted-reef-fish-arent-bothered…/
https://www.timeshighereducation.com/…/ex-judge-investigate…
The major findings of the original studies that were found to be wrong were that high CO2 concentrations cause small reef fish to
• lose their ability to smell predators, and can even become attracted towards the scent of predators,
• become hyper-active,
• loose their tendency to automatically swim either left or right, and,
• have impaired vision.
This is the second time the Magnificent 7 have got together to reveal a major scientific scandal. They were the whistle blowers of the infamous Lonnstedt scientific fraud in 2018. Lonnstedt, originally a PhD student at JCU, is also one of the scientists involved with these latest erroneous studies. She was found guilty of fabricating data in Sweden.
https://www.sciencemag.org/…/can-you-spot-duplicates-critic…
JCU has failed to properly investigate possible scientific fraud by Lonnstedt. Government funding agencies should send a message that institutions must take fraud seriously and not try to cover it up.
I was fired from JCU in 2018 after stating that work from JCU’s coral reef centre was not trustworthy. The Magnificent 7's work is more evidence that those comments had considerable substance.

Seems a bit of an echo chamber in this thread too?

Oh it’s positively BOOMing around in here

Agree, I’ve personally raised it before that AFF should remain more focussed on its core purpose rather then these weird fringe threads.

So, people to come onto a thread only to say they don't like the thread. If you don't like it, don't be on it!

Why not go and discuss on news.com.au? The topic, nature and level of debate is more suited over there.

Even though this thread is in the Boomers sand pit (used to be known as the Playground) - I agree with CE, this type of thread and a couple others really devalues the AFF brand. I would suggest a huge majority of us come here for travel facts and hacks and discussion, if I wanted to discuss some of the other rubbish that gets sidelined to the ‘playground’ where people lay in wait to kick other members I’d go have a comment war on the tabloid news sites.

There's an interesting bit of research by one Professor Jonathan Haidt that that was published 8 years ago - here's NY times article on it:

Haidt began to study political psychology in order to help the Democratic Party win more elections and found that views of each of three major political groups (conservatives, progressives and libertarians) contain useful insights and that truth/good policy can emerge from debating these ideas.

The professor wrote about the psychology of moral and political beliefs. Part of this is that left-wing and right-wing sentiments are asymmetrical.

His research showed generally that if you get a group of right-inclined folk to write down in factual terms what they think their left-inclined opponents believe, you will find they can on the whole give a reasonable exposition of them; they can describe views which they do not share, and identify points of difference. They can respect their opponents’ rationality even while reaching different conclusions.

However, if you ask a group of left-inclined folk to write down what they think their opponents believe, more often than not, they cannot do this in factual terms, falling instead into ridicule and sometimes open contempt.

The Professor claims this as more than a mere impression; he says it is an experimental finding. More interesting in the present context are the striking echoes of the Professor’s asymmetry, such as in the climate and brexit debates.

Coincidentally, the professor is touring Australia at the moment:

‘Very good chance’ democracy is doomed in America, says Haidt | Weekend Australia

Oh it’s positively BOOMing around in here

OK, X-er, ;) ... with a number of contributions from your good self, adding to the 'boom'. CE may have more, I'm not sure.

But you might like to take the kindly-meant advice of an old(er) guy - you may retain more good humor and equanimity if you do (not that you are not good-humored; forgive the double negative): Don't read threads you don't approve of and especially don't reply to them when its likely to invoke a helpful response. :) . You know almost all threads die out naturally when people get bored and the posts stop coming?

Even though this thread is in the Boomers sand pit (used to be known as the Playground)

Gee thats a cheap shot.. and you even got a like.. bravo

And yet we find room for cats, Uber, jokes and other unrelated issues with very few (if any) complaints.

Don’t forget the birds. However, one may have noticed there is not, what 3 threads with multiple posts every day on those topics.

Much clearer now hey - the boys in the back room have tapped ScoMo on the shoulder - bucko best we read the play here and get onboard or we can kiss the next rodeo goodbye - the market is never wrong!
