Hey Qantas, why is it that ....?

Why is it that one way international legs often cost the same as (or close to) the combined price of a return trip?

Because they can...

The more complex answer is on a return trip they know that both ways the seat has been sold. On a one way trip there is no guarantee that the seat will be sold on the return. Either way the seat that took you from AU to OS needs to get back to AU, so if it comes back empty because you stopped a person who would have otherwise done a vv that is lost revenue.

We don't see it with dom since LCC's only offer point to point pricing, as such if they tried to enforce the rules of old (eg a Saturday night stay) then they would lose out big time.

LCC's on the other hand aren't eating into the long haul categories as much as they are for short haul.

harvyk, you've given a logical answer but it does not quite explain how since there is more migration to Australia than from it, on a typical 'north south route' there wil be more southbound seats sold during the course of a year than northbound ones.

So while loadings change a lot from month to month and sometimes even by day of the week (international flights that are arrive back in Australia on a Sunday morning after a 'red eye' from southeast or north Asia are popular, those arriving on a Wednesday morning in theory less so), the overall yearly pattern should be that one way northbound fares are cheaper than southbound.

Of course, to Europe, a flight that has one stop in say PVG, BKK or MNL may experience the migration flow of more going north from their Asian city to Europe than coming south on one way tickets.

As I recall, wasn't the problem that there weren't enough one-way business class seats TO Australia because of the ASA Awards, particularly via Indonesia. Because of this a lot of potential passengers / migrants have had to make their way here on rickety old boats in economy!

EH

You forgot my first point

On INTL when watching a movie, why do you need to sit through the same three ads every time...........at least the fast forward button works.

Why is it that on searching Qantas.com for a return J class flight to LHR in March 14 the first option shown is SYD-DXB-LHR with QF codeshares on EK where the DXB-LHR and LHR-DXB legs are in Economy!!!!!! $7362.33

No pop-up warning box, no exclamation marks, nothing.
The new website is an absolute crock and the people responsible for designing it should be re-trenched.

because qantas makes more money that way. And the ads are cut into the video file?

Why does the Qantas Magazine not specify the status credits earned from Melbourne or Sydney to London via Dubai as only 60. Instead it specified MEL-DXB and SYD-DXB and DXB - LHR only which total 70 (i.e 25+45). The magazine fails to mention that if you continue on the same flight number (ie QF 1,2, 9 or 10) at DXB that you are not eligible for SC's for the two sectors.

Why are the icons for an F classic award or a J classic award so similar !!
I have to squint everytime I look at the calendar view lol

That annoys me too, but if it helps subsidise the service a bit I'll live with it.

Why is it they can't regularly change the episodes they screen for TV series? I was on my third Qf9/Qf10 run since July last weekend (well the QF9 bit anyway) and I've just about watched all the interesting drama TV eps.

Why is it that if we are travelling KTA-PER
1. breakfast offering is only muesli no HOT food and
2. with flights for evening meal we have to PAY for a wine???

I have compared this to MEL-BNE 859 miles versus 777miles KTA-PER... both have about 10 flights a day if you takeout JQ offerings on the Mel Bne run. ...

Plus the price differential!!! ... Cheapest PER-KTA (if you can find them nowadays) vs Mel-Bne are:

Red E $170 Mel Bne $297 KTA PER
Flexi $390 Mel Bne $597 Kta Per.

Full economy is similar in that Mel Bne $795 and Kta Per is $781

Plus, I won't even go into weekend when it is impossible for the locals to get a cheap flight down to Perth to visit relatives and get back to work on Monday.

I know with the FIFO's you are making a killing on this run...but surely at these prices, a free evening drink with the meal and a HOT breakfast is not too much to ask for.

Living in a FIFO town...great!!!

In the good old days, ie up until June, there were some really good value JASA's from Karratha to anywhere, including, I think Perth ( but certainly from Mel, via Perth). Do they still exist as a MASA?

Yes, just trickier to book.

Totally agree!

I dare say because you are not worth it to QF... Nor am i for that matter.
I get far far more op-ups on AA than I do as a QF WP. I got one yesterday after a situation saw me asking to be moved to another flight; they just bumped me to F instead!

Oh and the connecting flight I was opup'd too.

Maybe I should just fly AA more ;)
