Still Diamond here, I wasn't expecting a drop so a bit relieved. My card has March 2014 exp and I did hit just hit the base points for Diamond last year.

My diamond has remained on diamond....so far, but as of yesterday, my other gold account (which has a Mar 13 expiry and absolutely no stays at all on it) was also still showing gold, so not all may have gone through just yet.

Update, I just logged into my unused gold account and it changed overnight to blue.

So our diamond Mar 2014 look correct. Yea

My HH gold also changed to Blue yesterday. It will be interesting to see how this affects bookings I already have in ADL, BKK and KUL

Well Bye Bye to free internet and club access for starters!

As ozstamps says. Unlike the airlines their system keeps up with status changes so it will see you as Blue.

Downgrades done :(

Dumped from Diamond to Silver :o
(and already have 6 stays for 2013)

search for VISA Infinite "instant gold" upgrade

i dropped from Diamond to Silver and then bumped myself to Gold

Is it just me or does it seem weird to make this a once-off benefit?

I've certainly enjoyed the HHonors match, but Hitlon have done okay out of it too. I'd stayed in Hiltons maybe once a year (if that) previously. Since the match a few months ago I've already had over 7 stays in 6 different Hiltons. I'm likely to miss Gold renewal by BIB (just) and once the match expires I will simply go back to choosing hotels that have free internet access as standard. They'll be lucky if I book once a year.

It raises another point, that the benefits for VA Gold and Platinum seem regressive, in that if the benefits are 'once-offs' the longer you have status the less benefits you have. Just a weird, weird way to run a loyalty program.

Mrsdrron did the VA match when it first came out to HH diamond.dropped to blue at the end of March.
So tried to do another match to HH gold.Look at her HH account on the weekend and it now says HH diamond.
Not going to complain.

How do you opt in a second time?
does it not say already opted in on your VA account??
Am I missing something?

Status matches are once off benefits, with the expectation that from the many given, some will retain status after it expires. If it was offered each year there would not be the pressure to maintain that some feel ;)

I agree but it does seem silly that by being less loyal with VA you can then renew your HH back at gold level... like I have just done. I was diamond before, dropped to blue, now matched back to gold through VA, and I think since I've only just done it I have that status until 2015 now.

Indeed. I status matched to HH Gold last year and this year I'm about to become Diamond through BIB having already renewed Gold!

The anomaly being that in the case of VA's offer, maintaining the comped status gets you nothing (of this benefit) whereas failing to retain, even by flying not one mile, the passenger gets an almost as good an offer (ie. second top tier in the hotel loyalty program).

Not really an anomaly, third party offers are often available once such as the Marco Polo offer for Plat/Centurion, and same would apply there if you changed cards I suspect. The Delta/SPG crossover is more the anomaly, which may well become the norm!
