Great idea Rob, but the DWN - SYD flights business class is close to full and they are flying SYD - LAX with United so QFF points are not transferable there correct?

Again great idea though!

In regards to the DRW-SYD maybe Yield management can help?

Have they flown yet? Happy to pay for someone to upgrade (in points) from drw to syd?

What a fantastic response.
Red Roo this makes up for people being downgraded from J.But people will remember the bad when they have forgotten the good unfortunately.

Now Bomi18 when are they flying?I am sure somehow we will organise lounge access in the USA for you.there is a much larger US Frequent flyer site in the US.There is a forum for asking for lounge access on United-you need to have at least 90 posts and be a member for 90 days to post there but many of us can do that for you.
The United Club Meet-Up Thread - FlyerTalk Forums

Also was your mate in the Army?If so the Americans are very good to their veterans and in these circumstances I think United is very likely to come through with upgrades. We just have to find out who to ask.Maybe one of the Mods could PM the velocity rep to see if they could help with that.

But again what a community. We might get coughy but when needed the best comes out.

Hi mate, I have contacted UA through their FB and received a strange, highly informative yet almost dismissive response from them, I have asked politely but frankly are they willing to do any philanthropic gestures for the family.

Scott is still in the Army as am I, he is a Iraq and Afghan veteran and you are right the "Yanks" love their vets, have been there a few times including my HM and they love any coalition vet!!

Ill see what UA FB comes back with and go from there.

To everyone, thanks again for your kind words and offers of help. A massive thanks to QANTAS for the assistance, communication and lounge access for the family.

Bomi18 if UA don't come through let us know. Will post on FT for you.As he is an Iraq and Afghan vet I am sure someone will come through with lounge access at least.

I have no connections with QF, so I don't know if there is any way I can be of assistance.

All I'd like to say is I hope that the RedRoo and our other fantastic members are able to assist you in some way, I'm very sorry to hear of your situation.
I am sure that I am not alone when I say your friend is in all of our thoughts.

Welcome to the forum By The way :)

Bomi18, is it worth signing them all up (apart from the infant) to United's Mileage Plus program?? https://www.united.com/web/en-US/apps/account/enroll.aspx

Whilst it's not a program I know anything about, having 5 pax travelling should mean they earn some FF benefits (albeit I understand there is an 18 month expiry on points) - looks like about 18K miles in Economy. Not sure if you can pool mileage, or transfer between accounts - others more familiar with UA MP can probably add their suggestions.

Welcome to AFF Bomi18!

A truly sad story. Hope everything works out OK for their trip back to Canada.

There has been some work going on behind the scenes today regarding this situation. Suffice to say, there was a very kind AFF member (they wish to remain anonymous) who contacted me this morning and has assisted Bomi18 and his friends family to get in contact with UA. I can't share more at this point, but it certainly was great to speak with Bomi18 a number of times today. It is great to see UA and QF both doing what they can, given the time constraints. Thanks Red Roo and the mystery AFF'er ;)

I'll be cracking a bottle of red wine tonight and contemplating my good fortune over a couple of glasses. My thoughts are with the family, as I give my own kids an extra special hug tonight when I tuck them into bed (because there but for the grace of God, I could have gone). That's one of the factors that makes it so rewarding to be involved in helping others...

Hi all,
here is an update for what has been happening and offered to Scott and his family so far.

QANTAS have been fantastic and within 20 hours of me posting my first post here had confirmed that his family had complimentary access to QANTAS club lounges in DWN-SYD-LAX with the latter two being business lounge access.

UA has offered complimentary DEN lounge access and I am not 100% but possibly a seat upgrade.

QANTAS AP manager SYD and UA AP manager Syd have been in contact with each other to sync what they will be doing to help Scotts family.

Its been heartwarming and moving to say the least to see and receive all the PM's, emails and phone calls with offers of assistance.

I would like to public thank RedRoo and Leesa at QANTAS, Kevrosmith, Admin and last but not least QF WP.

If I have forgotten you please dont take offence but my brain is pretty full at the moment due to work commitments today and helping Scott out, which, took priority :D

I have co-owned and run a forum before using this very format and I know the dynamics of a forum and that sometimes things get clouded with BS and keyboard warriors, but AFF has proven to be an excellent bunch of people and when needed prove that in essence humans will do anything for humans when their chips are down.

I will post further updates on how the flight went and what actually came off offer wise.

Many thanks again,

Troy

That's great news Troy. In this day and age it's great to know that the spirit of human and corporate kindness is alive and well.
Best wishes, thoughts and prayers to your friends x

Thank you for the update Troy. I'm sure I wasn't the only one keenly anticipating the update/outcome. I'm so glad that something could be done to make your friend's trip a little more comfortable.

I tend to sit back a little on this forum as I'm not usually one for public forums. I try and contribute my limited knowledge and deals I find (if someone else hasn't found them first) and I have to echo the comments of others here. It is truly heartwarming to see what others have done to help in this very difficult time.

Please do keep us updated. I'm sure everyone is keen to hear that your friend's wife is reunited with her family. I also hope that you can enjoy a well earned break after they make there trip as I'm sure this has been an extremely busy few days for you. Everyone needs a good friend who "has their back" so to speak and I'm sure your friend is grateful for all that you (and the numerous others involved) have done.

UA have delivered an envelope to the anonymous AFF'er, who will take to the airport tomorrow to be handed to Scott upon check-in on Sunday morning. Seems to be coming together nicely.

Brilliant, can't say much more

I completely agree ashleyn. Never had some many text messages in a 3 way conversation before. Some seriously good work. did mean that I cracked a bottle of red tonight and toasted Scott, his wife and family on a journey I can't even begin to contemplate. Doing my bit towards a successful outcome is strangely catharic. Kissed my wife and kids now, who are all asleep. My work is done for today...
