HKG new lounge open

Sure, but isn't it just nice to be able to plug in without having to stuff around?

Sure, but can you really expect that everywhere you go overseas?

Australia and New Zealand are really freaks in this regard. There is almost no other country in the world which uses our plug type. Besides, airport lounges aren't the only places you need the adapters (on board also comes to mind, as long as they are not... Empower ports *shudder*), so I'm ready to use one wherever I go.

The Australian and NZ 'Type I' plug (socket) is also found in mainland China, which although only one nation happens to be the world's most populous.

<snip>.

No; ... um ... are we talking about 'everywhere I go overseas' in this thread? Maybe in large 'cross roads' type airports like HKG they could be handy, don't you think? The proportion of HKG users of the coupla billion people within flight distance from HKG, who don't use the HKG plug, might agree.

What kind of frequent traveller doesn't carry a suitable adapter with them for their electronic equipment?

I need to stay at more 5* hotels, because from my experience, there's still many who do not have universal power sockets, and many will also insist on a cash deposit or even a hire charge (or purchase) in order to supply you with an adapter.

Can't remember the last time I carried adapters. I rely on the hotels ensuring this essential everyday need is sorted.

I might be OCD but I'm the exact opposite to this and have the relevant adapters packed and FT threads searched for powerpoints onboard and in the lounges en-route.

Horses for courses. These days I'm not a heavy user and I'm not that fussed if something runs out. The last hotel where there wasn't an adapter in the room was Orange County - I fully expected this would be the case ;) Mind you, it wasn't the only thing that was a disappointment!

Lounge looks not too bad!

As for charging ports, USB ports should be standard in hotel rooms/lounges in any new build/upgrade.

A recent trip to Europe staying in 5* hotels, I was shocked at the number of hotels that didn't even have a powerpoint near the bed, I had to charge my phone well away from the bed which is annoying!

USB charging ports - It's not that hard

The HKG plug is the UK plug, which is fairly common in SE Asia - Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand use it, for example.

Yet to see a UK plug used in TH - the norm here is a US (non-grounded) and some sockets use the EU version (combined US/EU). Bring a non-grounded US plug and 99.99% of the time and you can't go wrong. :)

This map is rather handy too.

Yes, no problem. :) When I was in Malaysia I was about to say that it was an interesting colonial hang-over but quickly thought better of it! But I'm pretty sure mainland China doesn't use the UK socket, unlike the picture posted by Archphoto. It was them and the Indians, I was alluding to.

...Admittedly it was rather hard to find, as I arrived around Gate 50 and signage is rather woeful.

I get it's above Gate 15, but I did get rather lost - the elevator being out of service didn't help either. Need better directions for those coming off non-QF flights - maps show no lounge at all.

QF, any reason you couldn't implement universal power sockets in a "new lounge"? 5* hotels have them these days - having to hand over a boarding pass for an adaptor seems rather archaic in this day and age.

ISTR reading somewhere (FT probably) that the type of power socket is dictated by HKIA. I've not seen any other style anywhere in the airport.

We would have loved to incorporate universal power points in to the new lounge as we did in Singapore. However as suggested by Happy Trails, they're not currently certified by the relevant Hong Kong authorities.

Signage is governed by the Hong Kong International Airport Authority. They are in the process of updating the maps around the terminal.

Just to remove any doubts from anyone browsing here, mainland China uses the same plug as AU.

I've thought for a while that HKG airport is starting to lose its games, and I suppose this drives another nail in.

In SIN, all signs are updated BEFORE any changes are made, with the appropriate sections covered up with stickers with the same colour as the background - on launch day, they send staff around to make sure all signs have their relevant stickers removed.

its a shame when they updated the signs in T1 that they didnt update the carpet as well. Stepped off a cathay flight into SIN for the first time last week, thought I'd travelled back in time to the 1980's.

You can't get them all... :)

Just in the HKG Lounge, think it's great. I prefer it to the Cathay Wing (J) actually and the food is excellent. Currently polishing off a slice of cheesecake and some NZ Sav Blanc. It's quite busy but doesn't feel crowded. I'm a fan!

Flying QF F tonight, the new lounge is impressive however there is NO CHAMPAGNE! Only Australian sparkling Coldstream hills or some rubbish. I resolved this first world problem (or first class problem) by retiring to The Wing CX F lounge and am currently sipping Delamotte in the champagne bar.

Sorry QF, you lost me at hello. Might go back for pre flight supper though as the food looks interesting.

RedRoo, no Champagne for F? Oh dear. The 'enhancements' continue... I suppose it's now 'simpler and fairer' that I rub shoulders with paid QP members when flying F.

(Remove tongue from cheek) ;)

Are paid QP members lesser beings than F passengers?

Not at all. We all put our pants on one leg at a time (for those of us fortunate to have two of them) ;)

When you pay up to 15 times as much though some service differentiation would be nice ;)

A home base CX F lounge will always outdo a one size fits all Q box...
