Re: I've felt the sting of the QFF Loyalty Middle Finger

MEL-LHR in F is 420*, return with a DSC earns 1680. Change flight number in DXB to ensure 4~.

*Based on current SC earning.

But there wasn't mention of DSC. Just that people were cheating their way to status for ~100k points and one return.

DSCs have often been cited as part of the 'problem' of QF giving away status. So I included it for that reason.

Re: I've felt the sting of the QFF Loyalty Middle Finger

....unless combined with a DSC.

...
What are they ...?

(Rhetorical question really - I rarely had an offer and with the couple I did get I could not use them due to having such lounghaul travel planned and booked 11+ months out.)

I guess in that respect, there were very very few who could make use of a DSC offer in such a manner, requiring 256000 QFF points and P availability on specific flights in the generally short offer period.

As such I place these in the category of "Rainbow Unicorns" and discount them.

Re: I've felt the sting of the QFF Loyalty Middle Finger

Excluding any SC bonus it's the same BIS/flights. It took me 8 sectors to clock up 1,220SC, you can do the same today ... 6 sectors on QF1/2 will get you 1,260SC.
But you would have to pay for it.

Do you think someone paying 1cent payments on 4 Bankwest accounts earning ~30,000 points/month should be able to earn status that easily? They are already draining classic award availability why hand them status as well?

And no I am not missing the point. I got it.

Re: I've felt the sting of the QFF Loyalty Middle Finger

Like a few others, I've jumped ship from QF to VA since the fall of xASA. My yearly travel used to earn me 450-550SCs, and xASAs were a nice way to top to Gold. However, with the reduced threshold on VA, cheaper fares, priority boarding/luggage that actually works, partnership with SQ/EY and hopefully the new VA pier in PER, lower cost/taxes on redemptions - I don't see myself going back.

However, this is coming from one phytoplankton in the ocean ...

You are ignoring that mASA's did require cash payment; the long haul one's quite significant cost

As a rule of thumb, it cost 1¢ a point to redeem a classic award - and mASA's were maybe 10% more than that. Someone digging up 360000 points a year would need to spend $4000 or so to redeem those points.

What are they ...?

Indeed - I have been told about them but thought it was mythical. :D

I guess in that respect, there were very very few who could make use of a DSC offer in such a manner, requiring 392000 QFF points and P availability on specific flights in the generally short offer period.

25600 QF points + cash. MEL-SYD-LHR-SYD-MEL switching at DXB on one leg (I can never remember which way round it was, but it was in the days of QF9/10 and QF1/2 having similar timings.) You could nett 600 SC's and of course with the DSC, much like you serfty I never saw one of these myself, Bob is one's proverbial Uncle.

I'm not sure if DSC's occurred post S&F but MEL-SYD-DXB-LHR, in J, return came in at 640 SC's.

Re: I've felt the sting of the QFF Loyalty Middle Finger

You could also ask why getting cheap flights in Asia, or to/from Asia and adding on a couple of domestic tag flights for a few extra dollars isn't cheating your way to status either. Or why flying around the North America isn't cheating. But someone wants to pay extra for a bundle and they're destroying the whole status system.

The thing with MASAs. QF got my points and my cash. More cash than I would normally have parted with. Now AA gets my cash and I still have status. The boffins at QF really didn't think that through properly. I'd much prefer to keep my spend local, and I'm flying around Aus anyway, but the MASA was often better value (especially when the taxes on a JASA were lower than a Y cash fare).

That requires one to fork out quite a bit of cash..... while it is a "single run" its not obtainable for most of us.

And the whole point of a DSC offer is to get you to spend when QF need an influx of cash, or to reduce their liabilities. Them "giving" status as a result is the payout for getting people to spend money.

And you need to be flying to use that status. If a once a year flyer cashes in a heap of points on a MASA, they now have status they will rarely/never use. So they haven't cheated anyone out of anything. Its just a nice shiny card in their wallet.

...and I suspect that is why some feel that DSC's with mASA's was perhaps, what is the word I am looking for, argh yes, insane from QF's perspective.

And they are entitled to their opinion. The fact remains that people were buying flights that they otherwise would not have. Which is a win to QF.

I am pretty sure that the boffins at QF knew exactly what they were doing.

I think we may be posting at cross purposes, I was responding to: (my bolding)

For the record I applaud anyone and everyone that uses a frequent flyer scheme to maximise their benefit. I take my hat off to those that have maximised DSC's, mASA's and any other promotion to achieve their desired status.

An airline that was in the red (massively) encouraged me to take my cash elsewhere. They might have known what they were doing but I'm not so sure it was a great idea. Their being back in the black has nothing to do with MASAs and everything to do with massive cuts.
