IHG Hotels that recognise status

I'm here now, at the Canberra Crowne Plaza ...
Staying on PB rate ( 5,000 points / night ) ...
Got here after dark, and room windows are so heavily tinted, I can't see out the window, to note if we are overlooking the 'park'.
However, received a voucher for 'one free drink' when checking in.
Voucher states, one standard drink, plus 'canapes' plate.
when we presented to the hotel bar, the very cheerful bartender supplied us with two house spirit drinks, in glasses that held the equivalent of two standard drinks ... and gave me the voucher back, to use the following night !! ( apparently in lieu of no canapes available after 9pm. - but if we turn up before 9pm tomorrow night, we will get both drink & canapes ? )
So, here I am in Canberra ....

Property: Crowne Plaza Canberra
Status: Platinum
Booked: King Superior
Received: King Deluxe (park view)
Other: Voucher for one free drink + canapés each night

My status was recognised at check in, and other than the "upgrade" no benefits were offered (the drink + canapé voucher is offered as standard for Deluxe rooms).

The lobby has been reconfigured since I was last here and I like it. A number of different zones have been created, with sweet couches, several big TVs etc and it's quite a nice place to chill out with a couple drinks and catch up on the day's events.

Property: Holiday Inn Golden Mile HKG
Status: Platinum Amb.
Booked: Deluxe King
Received: Deluxe King Corner Room
Rate: 25K PC + USD70. per night.
Extras: Voucher for 2 drinks availed at bar, selection of chocolates delivered to room on plate. Extended Check out till 3pm.
Stayed last weekend, (both IC's booked out) very busy hotel & was told the hotel was full, upon checking appeared the only room left was suite @HKD4800++ per night.
I received a corner room which am told is an upgrade as is slightly larger & better (questionable) view?
The room was spacious for a city HKG property, though very clean, decor was quite dated, & was politely mentioned that it was an upgrade room.
Overall a very busy, well worn evidently sought after location in TST.
jl rating 6.5/10

When I stayed there, no drink/canapes voucher was offered (SM Plat against HH diamond), but we did receive a park view upgrade.

Personally, I found the CP CBR to be acceptable but boring and, well, uninspiring. Location was good, restaurant was Ok but certainly nothing to crow about and the hotel bar (given no club lounge) was woeful (IMHO).

Next stay in CBR for us, will most likely be elsewhere.

To be honest, you may find most CPs pretty uninspiring compared to Hilton properties. Some CPs are quite good, however (and full bets they are not in Australia / New Zealand), with nice decor and colours.

As for CBR, with no Hilton properties there, there's not a whole lot more in our usual loyalty circles. There are likely good hotels though price is one thing and they are not usually tied to the most beaten path loyalty programmes. It might line ball out after you take into account the lack of benefits, even for Platinums, at the CP CBR (though keep in mind that as a Platinum, you are entitled to free internet at the CP CBR, although with everyone having mobile data for their iPhones etc., who needs property wifi?)

I've gathered that. Must be spoilt, eh?

I do agree though, that I much prefer the CBR CP over the CBR Hilton......no comparison really!

For the next stay I was thinking Hyatt or Realm.

Holiday Inn Perth
Booked 2 bedroom family room
PP newsletter special - August 2013 for 3 nights.

Arrived and welcomed as Platinum member, fast and efficient, extremely friendly staff.

Received welcome card and bottle of $35 red wine, room had two rooms which was great for work colleague and myself. Nice room, clean and tidy, no view though. Very quiet as no noise, fantastic location in CBD.

Reception rang ten minutes after arrival to ensure I was happy with room and checkin......FANTASTIC service I have never had that at any 5 star hotel around the world!!!!

Food good, used PP card so received 50% off.

Extremely present stay, great location, quality holiday Inn, and staff greeting every time we entered/exited the hotel. A nice surprise!!!

As you go down the scale of properties, they get less and less inspiring. The CPs are aimed lower down the market than the Hilton, so you really shouldn't expect them to be as inspiring as a Hilton. In saying that, the Hilton chain is itself pretty uninspiring IMHO. Take a way the HHonors program, and you'd see plenty defectors IMHO.

Is that on the table?

TBH, For Oz stays with at least some flexibilty, Hilton seems the best value. Sure it's not top end, but IMHO represents pretty good value with HH. Without HH is a different story and yes, I'd probably defect, but not to IHG. Most likely back to BFOD (which I still think is best value, but doesn't quite give the ego massage that status does ;) )

Booked: King Bed Superior
Received: King Bed Park View
Rate: Reward night - 5,000 Points Break

Welcomed at reception as a Platinum member and given a voucher for one free drink each and canapes in Binara 1 Bar. We were told we could redeem it until 10pm.
We arrived late at the hotel, went to the bar at 8.15 and were immediately served our drinks and were told there would be a wait for the canapes.
After 45 minutes I queried how much longer the canapes would be and was asked who served me - apparently he had finished for the night and so had the canapés! The new barman was apologetic and asks if we would like another complimentary drink but I told him it was the canapes we wanted.
We left and as I walked past I told reception I wasn't happy about the situation and asked why offer the canapes if they weren't going to honour them. The receptionist said he would arrange for something to be delivered to our room....
Around 10 minutes later there was a knock at our door and we were presented with a bowl of hot chips and two sachets of tomato sauce .

I've stayed at CP Canberra many times and there really is something missing here. The service is hit and miss and the rooms are a mix of old and new with really basic bathrooms.
On a positive note I always receive an upgrade to a park view room.

Property: Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu
Status: Platinum
Booked: King Resort View Room
Received: King Overwater Villa
Rate: Reward night - 5,000 Points Break

Best ever stay at an IHG property... Made use of the PP dining discounts almost everywhere, facilities great (loved the catamarans and of course all FOC) and staff fantastic. Internet was of course free, however reliability somewhat spotty, but at the end of the day didn't matter as was there to enjoy a quick getaway!

Yes it's a Resort skewed towards families, but wouldn't hesitate to go back...

Sounds very pleasant.. Nice recognition Like the idea of the overwater villas too.. :D

At a recent stay on PB points, I have later found, that I appear to have 'earned' points !!

Also, 'My Activity' lists that stay as 'non-qualifying', however, on my account summary, it shows as both an 'elite qualifying' stay, and a 'brand' stay.

Could the points earned on the PB stay, actually be for expenditure on 'meals' at the hotel restaurant ?

too bad this posted on 31st. August ... would have been interesting to see if somehow, it married-up with the 'Big Win' promotion ...

Ok, thanks.
So, with the Big Win promo ... the reference to $US190. spend, in order to rack up a bonus 800 IHG Reward Points ... the spend needs to be place on a room account ? Can that dollar figure be spread out the course of the promo ( or on a 'one stay' account ) ?

Yes, there is acutally a post in that thread explaining it can be spread and needs to be room charge.

Nice that CP is showing you recognition.. :-)

Pinktommy,

How did you value the wine? Generally I have found the bottles of wine given to me in Australian hotels retail between $5 and $15. In many cases I have actually identified that the vintage is being dumped and you can actually see it on various dumping sites at a low cost.
