Re: 12E or 16A on the A380

On LAX SYD and Am currently in 17abe(I think) saw 11 opened up but the other side closest to the lounge. Seatguru has these marked as yellow due to noise from lounge. No other 3 seats together in front cabin. I read that 16 sounds like a bad row to be in, is 17 tainted with that also?

Nothing wrong with row 11 it is after all Platinum Alley. The lounge is usually hardly ever used. The small 3 row cabin is very quiet and private have been seated there many a time. Have a great trip. The only annoyance can be if some one leaves the curtain open and the lights on :D

The little lounge is actually quite handy as an extra changing room to get out of your PJ's as the bathrooms inevitably block out as landing approaches.

J seat choice on A 380

Hi, advice needed on seat selection.

I have a choice right now of 11 k or 12 b in the front mini cabin on QF 11. Traveling solo, and I would normally choose a centre aisle, but none are available. Row 11 is the bulkhead, and I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not? It is close to the "bar" at the front of J but in my experience no one much goes there.

I always thought that "emerald city" is just a no brainer if available, but I read an ausbt review which says row 19 is a good option.

I also have selected a centre aisle J seat on QF2 from LHR - SYD. I've never been to the middle east, so (unlike the flight to LA), I would like to look out the window if there is anything to be seen on approach or departure from DXB and would try for a window seat if this the case?

thanks

Re: J seat choice on A 380

I've been fortunate to ride the A380 in Biz about half a dozen times and always in Emerald City.
I agree with others who refer to the main J cabin as "the dormitory" - just too big compared to the more personal feel of 11-13.

Be aware 11K is the (only J) seat with "Medical Power" for users of CPAP machines like myself. I don't know if you'd be moved if someone else needed it, but it might be appreciated if you didn't sit there by someone who needs it - I wish QF would block it off to be honest until, say T-72, given it is the only such seat in J to my knowledge.

Having said that there's not a dud seat in Emerald City - perhaps it comes down to a preference for Aisle or Window and whether you value the extra side storage bins in Window seats.

Re: J seat choice on A 380

I'd personally opt for 12B in the "sapphire shed" rather than the main cabin. (Like the OP I much prefer centre aisle seats - 12E being my favourite.) I haven't flown J on the 380 this year, but have 12E locked in for six sectors before year's end.

There is a problem with 11K as you may get booted from your seat if another Business passenger requires a medical power supply. (as late as on boarding...)

Re: J seat choice on A 380

Thanks. Does the bulkhead make it any easier or harder for the window seat pax to manoeuvre past you when you're sleeping?

I flew 11 a and b a few times but am now opting for 12 as it seemed a little more cramped getting out of row 11 seats. They are still great, but it's probably down to the micro-prefrences of the too frequent flyer.

You know you fly too much when you get upset because you've got the 'wrong' J seat.

I was fuming (until I heard the words 'first world problem, relax' on my internal commentary) when a last minute change to QF63 the other week saw my carefully selected 1A in the old F cabin substituted with a cramped 1a with a passenger beside me on an old config 2 class 747. I wasn't half as fuming however as the 9 J pax that got downgraded because of the change!!

Re: J seat choice on A 380

Certainly a first world problem, & thanks for the tips re 11K and the medical power supply I'll stay put in row 12.

It was easy even with the bed out and flat, plenty of space in front. In fact found it so far in front i need to completely get out of my seat and take a step to retrieve my shoes form the little cubby hole.

Re: 12E or 16A on the A380

There is also a little area marked 'crew only' next to the self serve bar that I've been allowed into (just to change). I would be a bit worried I would have some small child walk in on me if I got changed in the lounge! Not that anyone ever uses it though. Sounds silly but it would actually be a great value-add to Y+ or Y rather than business!

It would, but then we'd be complaining about the Y lounge hogs. There is only room for 4.

Re: 12E or 16A on the A380

I've long maintained that, for an hour after take-off and an hour before landing, the J lounge should be curtained off so it can be used as changerooms. This will stop people clogging up the toilets just getting into/out of their PJs.

Got 20F which looks to have quite good reviews, although fingers crossed my upgrade to F comes through.

;)

Thanks for all the tips. Seems the EC filled up quick now so only single seats so I'll be content with my J in the main J cabin. The seatmap on SeatGuru shows the rows with the middle two seats set back a fair bit from the outer two. In the pictures and videos I've been able to find this doesn't seem to be as pronounced. If we are in 17AB & E is E back or in front much of B? hope that makes sense!

Keep your eyes open up until the last minute. Quite often seats free up in the SS when upgrades are processes.
