Jetstar Delays/Cancellations

Quickstatus, I like to be critical of airlines as much as anyone but the alterations to flight numbers probably have more to do with minimising or eliminating confusion between the 'real' passengers booked on say JQ35 on day Z and the 'refugees' from (say) the previous day's, delayed 24 hours, JQ35 (which say becomes JQ1035 or as is the practice with some other airlines, JQ35D.)

It may also make it easier for operations centre software and staff to deal with what must be changed roster issues: parameters such as hours worked compared to maximum allowable in a month, mandatory minimum rest ghours prior to the next rostered flight and so on.

Nonetheless, you are probably correct: substituting a flight number (which does not always occur with JQ) would make the punctuality and cancellation statistics look better on FlightStats - Global Flight Tracker, Status Tracking and Airport Information

Unsure about that AA,

I dont know how Delayed, resheduled, or cancelled is defined/applied in Flightstats
I suspect if the airline does not publish it then apps like FS will not pick it up?

It seem to use a proprietary algorithm and search routine from a variety of sources. As always GIGO.

As FS is monetising their service, one would think that its data would be reliable?

Maybe a regular user of FS can comment.

This is what FS says about its data acquisition

Using MEL airport departure information JQ35/36 appeared as delayed for a short period before dissappearing. No declaration of delayed, cancelled or rescheduled status

The 1450 hours Thursday 5 May MEL - HKT, JQ17 (B788 VH-VKE) took off at 1534 and should arrive at about 2130 hours this evening, 45 minutes behind time.

JQ766 from SYD to ADL arrived 80 minutes late at 1545. This flight has a surprising number of delays.

JQ7001 was airborne from MEL at 1723 on Thursday 5 May with B788 VH-VKI the aircraft; it appears to be heading for DPS from the detail available on FlightAware.

Presumably this is to bring passengers back from DPS who have been stranded thanks to the delays that AFF member Quickstatus has kindly been keeping us abreast of a few posts back on this thread. I assume that if it is a four numeric flight number like this that it is an 'empty working', that is, without paying or other passengers.

On Friday 6 May, JQ515, the 1345 SYD down to MEL is instead expected to depart at 1455.

Earlier, JQ798 from MEL to MCY had a 'sleep in' as instead of departing at 0600, it did so at 0710 and should arrive MCY 75 minutes late at 0930 hours. The returning flight, JQ799, should arrive back in MEL also 75 minutes late at 1230.

JQ774 from MEL to ADL, the 0830, is showing as altered to depart at 0905 but a few minutes later had not done so. JQ506, the 0915 MEL - SYD should depart half an hour late while JQ502, the 1140 departure on the same route is expected tom push back 70 minutes late at 1300 early this afternoon.

JQ721, the 1110 hours SYD - HBA is expected to depart at 1140. AFF contributor katiebell points out that the QantasLink punctuality on this route (like MEL - HBA) leaves much to be desired so it is not good to also observe JQ flights running late.

While thus far only advised as delayed in its departure for 25 minutes from 1245 to 1310 this afternoon, JQ766 from SYD to ADL is again unpunctual. This fairly frequently occurs yet it is a flight departing at an offpeak time of the day.

UPDATE: JQ3 from SYD to HNL departed at 1647, 22 minutes late but the deficit is expected to rise to 34 minutes with a same day, 0634 hours predicted arrival.

Normally I try to restrict the thread to delays of half an hour or more, but JQ753 is expected to be delayed in its MEL departure from 2018 (an ATC-mandated pushback 'exact' time) to 2040 for the trip southeast down to LST. This shows how the best laid plans...can come to nought as ATC's software must go to some effort to produce amended departure times to try to ensure that everything runs smoothly...yet in the end, delays occur.

JQ487 from BNE to NTL is expected to depart at 215 instead of 2010 while MEL-bound JQ567 ex BNE should leave at 2145 this evening, 45 minutes behind time.

On saturday 7 May, JQ798 from MEL to MCY is cancelled.

Saturday 7 May sees JQ507 (0825 SYD - MEL) delayed for an expected even hour in its departure.

Earlier, A320 VH-VFI operating JQ472 (0615 hours MEL up to NTL) did not take off until 0703 and hence should arrive at roughly 0815, half an hour late. While it may recover this time gradually through cutting down turnarounds or picking up time en route on various flights, starting the day in such a 'grumpy' fashion can mean at least two or three more flights are unpunctual.

JQ203, the 1145 SYD - AKL has been cancelled, the second time this week if I recall. Does this mean low bookings or is JQ an aircraft down on availability?

JQ707 (1025 mid morning MEL - HBA) should depart half an hour late.

UPDATE: JQ507 was delayed for about 55 per cent more than QF had originally predicted - it departed from SYD at 1003, an hour and 38 minutes late, rather than just an hour behind. It arrived in partly sunny MEL at 1140 instead of 1000, 100 minutes behind time, thus failing to pick up any time on its southbound point-to-point run.

Slightly upthread on 3-4/5/16 I was posting about the delayed JQ35/36 but I had overlooked the other JQ flight to DPS.

In order to illustrate the domino effect of one delay:

Aircraft: VH-VKJ B787
Airline: JQ

4/5/16 JQ57 BNE-HNL diverted to DRW. Overnighted there between 2230 and 1400 hrs. Arrived into DPS at 1500hrs 5/5/17 = 18 hrs late
5/5/17 JQ58 DPS-BNE arrived 0030 hrs 6/5/16 = 15 hrs late
6/5/16 JQ5 BNE-HNL arrived 1430 hrs (-1 at 5/5/16) = 9 hrs late
5/5/16 JQ6 HNL-BNE arrived 2130 hrs (+1 at 6/5/16) = 8 hrs late
6/5/16 JQ57 BNE-DPS arrived at an ungodly 0317 hrs 7/5/16 = 6 hrs late
7/5/16 JQ58 DPS-BNE departed at an even more ungodly hour of 0500 hrs arriving into BNE at 1153 hrs 5.5 hours late
7/5/16 JQ5 BNE-HNL departed on time.

The poor passengers for the 7/5/16 flight may have arrived at DPS airport and checked in at 2130 hrs at the latest . Would JQ operating a LCC model have tried to contact these passengers to delay their checkin. If not they would have had a very long night in DPS airport without showers in the tropical heat of DPS airport.

The reason for the divert is unknown. The prolonged timeout in DRW of nearly 16 hrs ?? - Crew hours?? tech??

Quickstatus, a very good illustration of how airlines that try to maximise aircraft utilisation can face situations where it can take three days to resume normal schedules.

One difficulty for passengers at (in this case) busier JQ ports is that even if one knows that an aircraft has been running badly late, it may be switched onto a different flight (scheduled to be operated by the same 'equipment') at short notice and hence one cannot always state with certainty two days out that a (subsequent) flight will be seriously late.

The 0915 hours MEL to DPS at times has a similarly shocking record of delays and even cancellations. Strangely SYD does not seem to be so badly affected.

With compliments to the JQ ground operations, the delays illustrated above was minimised by a series of rapid turnarounds of around 2-2.5 hours.

As this was a 787 operation with 335 passengers and single door embarkation, a more complex A380 turnaround such as that required for QF10-9 must be very difficult to consistently achieve in the published 2 hours requiring liberal use of fuzzy hours so the usual 3 hour turnaround does not delay arrival.

I suppose embarkation on an A380 via triple aerobridges could be quicker than a JQ787 LCC single door. 1 bridge however serves the entire main deck Y = 341 pax

On Monday 9 May 2016, JQ700 from HBA to MEL (0800 departure, airborne at 0819, A320 VH-VWW) was in a long holding pattern over Leongatha and should arrive at about 1002, 47 minutes late.

JQ774, the 0830 hours from MEL to ADL, took off at 0942 and should arrive at about 1017, 47 minutes late with VH-VFI as the A320 aircraft.

The LST - MEL JQ730, A320 VH-VQQ, has also been affected by the queue of aircraft to get into MEL and should arrive at about 1017, 32 minutes late. JQ507, the 0825 hours SYD down to MEL (A321 VH-VWU) did not take off until 0919 and is predicted to arrive at about 1043, 42 minutes late.

The 0915 MEL - DPS, JQ43, took off at 0946 and should arrive half an hour late at 1345 this afternoon. The 1020 BNE - MEL, JQ563 (VH-VWZ, an A321) should arrive about 33 minutes late at 1323.

JQ772, the 1010 MEL across to ADL *A320 VH-VFJ) was airborne at 1222 and will arrive at approximately 1304, 124 minutes behind time.

JQ7, the 1115 MEL to SIN took off at 1202 and ought arrive at roughly 1740, 50 minutes late with plane VH-VKG, a B788.

The 1350 hours MEL to OOL, JQ444, took off at 1441 (A321 VH-VWZ.) Arrival should be 47 minutes late at 1537 this afternoon meaning that it has lost further time since its arrival in MEL ex BNE this morning.

Wednesday 11 May 2016 sees JQ605, the 0655 SYD to AVV, cancelled as is the 0815 hours SYD to OOL.'

JQ701 (super early morning 0605 MEL down to HBA) will also suffer this fate.

JQ43, a flight that often performs badly when it comes to timekeeping, is living up to its reputation with departure delayed to an expected 1100 in lieu of the normal 0945 hours.

Yep - dropped off a mate for this flight so had time for a leisurely breakfast at home then a sneaky pint at MEL. JQ said it was due to 'engineering requirements', and they're turning around JQ30 from BKK (arrived around 0940) to go out as JQ43.

badseed, just for clarification so as to assist other JQ patrons - not that many on AFF patronise it from all accounts.

Was this a case where your passenger received warning of the delay by text message or other means from Jetstar and hence he had an altered - that is, later - check in time than would normally have been the case?

Thank you also for the wonderful 'at the coalface' information. Nothing beats it: hope you enjoyed your (overpriced?) lager or ale, although some of us cannot imbibe before 1200 or 1300.

Thankfully I'm my own boss this week, so only have myself to answer to. Still, I admit that consuming a beer at 0830 was a struggle.

He received a text from JQ at around 0630 informing of the delay, and stating that check-in time was extended to 1000 (1 hour prior to re-timed departure).

On Wednesday 11 May, the 1730 hours arrival in MEL ex HBA (JQ710) instead pulled up at the gate at 2112, almost four hours late.

JQ943, the 1425 hours CNS to MEL, was airborne at 1528 on Thursday 12 May and hence is about to arrive at 1840, 50 minutes late. Aircraft is A320 VH-VQM.

On Friday 13 March 2016, JQ707 (1025 MEL down to HBA) is delayed until a projected 1110 in its departure meaning estimated arrival at 1225 not 1140.

JQ11, the 'tag flight' leg of which is from SYD to OOL, is timetabled out at 0805 but was only airborne at 0942, resulting in arrival likely at about 1056 instead of 0930. Aircraft is B788 VH-VKL.

JQ502, the 1150 MEL to SYD and JQ436, the 1200 MEL to OOL have been cancelled: if I recall, these were not appearing as 'cancellations' at 0930 this morning, so it is a classic way for JQ to recover from late running on other sectors to cancel flights at the last minute. Shame about passengers who want to arrive at their destination at anything close to the advertised time, but they can always spend the extra waiting time reading the terms and conditions that do not include uplift on the booked day of travel!

If one wants a reliable airline, JQ would be my bottom choice of the four major airlines. Five years ago, it would have been TT, but despite a smaller fleet, TT has become more reliable and punctual than JQ. the latter has a particular problem on the MEL - SYD - MEL route.

JQ661 (1415 hours AYQ - SYD) did not take off until 1512, with arrival suggested as 1830 hours, 45 minutes behind time. Aircraft is A320 VH-VGZ.

Saturday 14 May is not a great morning for JQ passengers ex MEL with JQ798, the 0600 hours to MCY, along with JQ560 (0730 hours to BNE) and JQ502 (0735 hours to SYD) all cancelled.

JQ507, the 0825 SYD down to MEL, departed 73 minutes late at 0938 with arrival expected 75 late at 1115. JQ513, the 1245 departure on the same route is not forecast to depart until 1340 hours.

JQ510 (1040 hours MEL to SYD) has been delayed in its departure until a suggested 1145 hours.

JQ18 from HKT to MEL was meant to arrive at 0945 hours on Saturday 14 May but should do so instead at 1815 hours this evening, an eight and a half hour delay. JQ2, the 1440 hours arrival from HNL in MEL is instead pulling in to the gate at about 1700 this afternoon.

Probably as a result, the 1305 hours early afternoon JQ29 from MEL to BKK will instead depart at a forecast 2040 hours. Instead of arriving at a comfortable 1900 hours tonight, it should do that at a most uncomfortable 0340 hours on Sunday 15 May.

Thw 14 May JQ27 (1425 hours SYD - HKT) took off at 1514 and therefore should arrive at about 2135, 40 minutes late. Aircraft is B788 VH-VKJ.

The Saturday 14 May JQ29 (1305 hours MEL to BKK) ended up departing at 2053 hours, arriving at 0252 on Sunday 15 instead of 1925 on Saturday 14. The return JQ30 departed at 0412 on Sunday instead of 2140 hours on Saturday, with MEL arrival suggested as 1612 this afternoon in lieu of the timetabled 0930 hours.

As a result JQ7 ex MEL should depart at 1915 this evening instead of 1115 on Sunday 15 May for SIN, an eight hour delay. Assuming it is the same aircraft that comes in late from BKK, why it is taking three hours to turnaround in MEL is a mystery that some well informed AFF member may be kind enough to explain.
