Jetstar Delays/Cancellations

On Thursday 18 August 2016 at page 3, 'The Australian' has an article by its aviation journalist Mitchell Bingemann entitled 'Engine shutdown risk for Jetstar' that discusses problems leading to a loss of oil pressure for the General Electric GEnx model engine.

The article suggests that up to half of Jetstar's Boeing Dreamliners could be flying with the problem and lists a considerable number of other airlines that have experienced difficulties with the engine including AI, CZ, JL, QR and UA.

It discusses the GUM diversion noted above but does not state that this marooned the aircraft (VH-VKK) in GUM for 10 days, a considerable period of time. Like competitors 'Sydney Morning Herald' and 'The Age', 'The Australian' has an early cut off for its print edition so the journalist may have written the story on Wednesday morning before the Dreamliner stuck in GUM departed for MEL.

This is a very technical area so those of us who are mere mortal passengers without engineering knowledge can only hope that such problems are solved.

Also on 18 August, JQ850, the 1445 MEL - CNS (A321 VH-VWU) took off at 1704 with arrival suggested as 2015, 130 minutes tardy.

The 1420 hours Friday 19 August NTL - MEL, A320 VH-VFK on JQ477 took off exactly at 1520 with arrival suggested 45 minutes behind time at 1645.

JQ665 (1225 AYQ - MEL) is worse affected, having been in the sky at 1421. VH-VGD is set to be at the gate at 1705 this afternoon, 90 minutes late.

On Sunday 21 August, JQ43, the 0915 hours MEL - DPS was airborne only a tiny number of minutes late at 0940 but presumably due to the normal headwinds is not arriving until about 1347 this afternoon, 32 minute sbehind schedule. The B788 is VH-VKJ.

Later on Sunday 21 August, the early evening 1810 hours flight from SYD to HKT, JQ32 took off at 2108 with B788 VH-VKL undertaking the duty. It should arrive at approximately 0329 on Monday 22 - shocking time to arrive - instead of 0030.

JQ610, the 2030 AVV up to SYD was airborne at 2127 with consequent arrival delayed to an expected 2234, 39 minutes behind time. A320 VH-VQQ is the bird.

On Monday 22 August 2016, JQ705, the 0830 hours from MEL down to HBA took off at 0916. A320 Vh-VFO should arrive at about 1018 which would be 33 minutes late.

Later on Monday 22 August, JQ514, the 1520 hours from MEL up to SYD is instead expected to depart at 1610 hours for an also 50 minute late arrival at 1735 late this afternoon.

JQ7 (1115 hours late morning MEL up to SIN) has a poor punctuality record (and is sometimes cancelled when JQ has a plane fail unexpectedly). It is living up to that shocking reputation today with B788 Vh-VKE having been airborne at 1330 and arrival suggested as 155 minutes tardy at 1935 hours tonight in the Lion City.

JQ661 (AYQ-SYD) cancelled today after the inbound flight JQ660 exSYD was unable to land due to weather and diverted to Alice Springs

JQ 473 NTL - MEL dep 0620 cancelled today.
Interesting point, SO was automatically rebooked onto JQ477 dep 1420. He came home resigned to a wasted day, when I said why didn't you try to get yourself on JQ475 0815 departure, he rang Jetstar at 0700 and was told because he had paid the $12 for an upfront seat they could put him on the flight. Luckily we live 15 mins from the airport.

On 8/9/16 JQ255 the 0730 AKLWLG was delayed by approximately 1hr30m after smoke and a strong burning odour was detected in the cabin just prior to doors closed. All passengers were disembarked sans their carry on bags. Engineers isolated the issue to the air conditioning system and we were on the way.

Some few weeks later I find myself on the exact same aircraft (VH-VFN) as the incident in AKL a few weeks... so long as they have replaced whatever was burning I suppose I'm okay with it

On Thursday 6 October, JQ220, the timetabled 2205 hours late evening arrival from ZQN at MEL is not expected until roughly 2245.

The evening 1930 hours ADL across to SYD (JQ769 - A320 VH-VQR) did not take off until 2044 so should arrive at around 2246 instead of 2150. That is cutting it fairly fine for the 2300 hours curfew (although what matters is the touchdown time, not when a flight is blocks on at a gate or other terminating point).

JQ91, the Friday 7 October redeye with a timetabled pushback at 0110 hours from DPS took off at 0205 and hence should be at the CNS arrival gate at about 0824, 44 minutes late. Aircraft is A320 VH-VQP.

The closely following JQ82 that is an 0120 hours ex DPS took off at 0223 and should be in DRW at roughly 0621, 36 minutes behind time with A320 VH-VGN undertaking the task.

A 'technical problem' - don't we just love euphemisms - with 'doors' tonight (Friday 7 October) - by which the media or Melbourne Airport may mean 'aerobridges unable to be moved' (with one tweeter asserting that VA, for one did not know the manual override code) has been downplayed by JQ but appears to have resulted in more significant delays than JQ admitted.

JQ528, the 2045 hours from MEL up to SYD was airborne at 2200 and after a fast run should touch down at about 2256 and arrive at the terminal five minutes or so later. Aircraft is A321 VH-VWZ.

Some passengers may have been stuck on board planes, unable to alight.

JQ769 (1930 hours ADL across to SYD) took off at 2043 with touchdown of A320 Vh-VFQ expected at 2237 so the flight will be about 52 minutes late when blocks are on at perhaps 2242.

The Sunday 9 October 2016 arrival of JQ24 (B788 VH-VKA) in MEL has become 0919 instead of 0010 after it took off from NRT at 2055 on Saturday 8 instead of its pushback time of 1215 hours. In turn this looks to be delaying JQ25 from MEL to CNS and back to NRT to a 1030 hours estimated pushback instead of 0835 on Sunday 9.

JQ605, the 0755 hours from SYD down to AVV did not take off on Sunday 9 until 0857. Arrival of A320 VH-VQK should be at 1018, 48 minutes behind time.

UPDATE: With the predicted gusty winds in MEL on Sunday 9 October, the 1125 MEL - LST, JQ735 (A320 VH-VQZ) did not take off until 1213 and hence will not arrive until about 1307 hours, 37 minutes behind time.

JQ946 (also an 1125 hours departure, but to CNS) took off at 1230 and should arrive at 1435, 50 minutes behind time. Aircraft is A320 VH-VFK.

The 1200 'high noon' from MEL up to BNK, JQ464, took off at 1243 so arrival is forecast as 1432, 32 minutes tardy with aircraft VH-VGY, an A320.

Also on Sunday 9 October, JQ436 (1200 'high noon' from MEL up to OOL) took off at 1257 with likely arrival at 1354 (54 minutes late); A321 VH-VWU is the craft.

The 1110 hours MEL - ADL, JQ772, did not take off until 1317. Arrival is forecast for 1359, 119 minutes late with aircraft A320 VH-VQH.

JQ511 (the 1210 hours from SYD down to MEL) did not take off until 1301 so arrival is suggested as 1521, 96 minutes behind time. A320 VH-VGA is undertaking the task.

VH-VQK (A320) on the 1135 OOL - AVV (JQ631) is arriving at around 1529, 39 minutes behind time.

JQ477, the 1420 hours from NTL down to MEL was airborne at 1622 and hence should pull in to the MEL gate at around 1648, 48 minutes behind the timetable: aircraft is A320 VH-VGO.

JQ665 (1125 hours from AYQ to MEL) was airborne at 1328 and hence instead of a 1535 hours mid afternoon arrival, the latter has become 1733: 118 minutes tardy. A320 VH-VFJ is the aircraft.

The 1615 hours from MEL up to SYD, JQ518, took off at 1803 with arrival forecast for 1920 hours, an hour and 40 minutes late. A321 VH-VWZ is the aircraft.

The delays are continuing up until stumps on Sunday 9 October with JQ520, the 1805 hours MEL - SYD departing at 1937, while JQ566 (1815 hours from MEL up to BNE) departed 67 minutes late.

JQ526, the 1845 hours from MEL to SYD departed at 1933.

The 1905 hours MEL - LST, JQ743, has been cancelled as has JQ442 (1940 hours MEL - OOL) and JQ522 (1940 hours MEL - SYD).

The 1920 hours MEL - CNS, JQ948 is instead expected to push back at 2050. JQ713 (1935 hours from MEL down to HBA) has been delayed an expected 100 minutes to 2115 tonight.
