Jetstar Delays/Cancellations

Yes JQi mercilessly flogs the B787 fleet.
Just a brief overview (without much checking)



In the last 7 days VH-VKA operated 13 flights mainly out of MEL
Ground times were
12 hrs or more: 1
10-12 hrs: 0
8-10 hrs: 1
6-8hrs: 0
4-6hrs: 2
2-4hrs: 6
0-2hrs: 2

VKB with 14 flight mainly out of SYD
Ground times were:
12hrs or more: 2
10-12hrs: 1
8-10hrs: 0
6-8hrs: 2
4-6hrs: 1
2-4hrs: 5
0-2hrs: 3

These are (approx) actual ground times and not scheduled ground times. Scheduled times may push some of the longer ground times into the shorter periods.

I will check these in the morning

But a LAME may comment on some examples of what can be repaired/replaced in 4 hours or less.

As a side note domestic fleets tend to rest between 10pm and 6am except for some red eyes flying East. International fleets tend to be more efficiently "flogged" operating out of non curfew airports

Saturday 3 December sees JQ502, the 0725 hours MEL - SYD operated by A320 VH-VFU having taken off at 0807 with arrival suggested as 32 minutes behind at 0922.

Yes JQi mercilessly flogs the B787 fleet.

I mentioned this a while ago that it seems one major pair of flights each week seems to get cancelled - be it BKK, SIN or DPS etc. Other AFF members have suggested this isn't a problem as all airlines have the occasional cancellation... but the impact of JQi's cancellations are extreme... with non-daily flights a cancellation can mean significant delays to your journey of 24-48 hours. Fine to dismiss the odd cancellation when it doesn't affect you, but different story when it does :(
 
Perhaps they are comparing it to the domestic operations where a cancellation or two does not significantly impact on a passenger because there are multiple services operating a city pair (eg CityFlyer)

International services on the other hand, can have significant consequences for passengers because of the often once daily or non daily operation.

It is hard though to divine whether the cancellations are due to last minute seat shedding (that LCC anecdotally seem to do) or the lack of time to perform essential repairs

According to the Jetstar Source website VH-VKH a JQ B788 hasn't moved from SIN since yesterday - we can only assume its broken/out of service/in maintenence or whatever. So yes JQi are down at least one aircraft.

Lots of the JQ domestic A320 fleet being repositioned MEL-AVV-MEL for refueling so that would have made things a bit tighter in the JQ domestic A320 fleet last week and possibly explain a few of the minor delays last week.

You can only do seat shedding if your loads are low enough, and certainly from my experiences on JQi that has not been the case

Vh-VKH is scheduled to depart the island city state at 1200 Sin time as JQ8. The usual JQ8 service at 2010 will not occur tonight as the outbound JQ7 from MEL today was cancelled.

Some passengers from tonight's JQ8 might be accommodated on this afternoons flight or the QF flights out of the city state

The JQ delays are going from very bad to worse.

JQ43, the 0955 hours Saturday 3 December 2016 MEL - DPS took off at 1503 with arrival suggested as 1758, 303 minutes behind the timetabled arrival of 1255 hours. B788 VH-VKL is the aircraft.

This will presumably mean a post-0200 hours arrival back into MEL on Sunday 4 December of JQ44 ex DPS.

Travellers might think that on Saturday afternoons, normally the slackest period of the week demand-wise that JQ would be able to punctually operate its SYD - MEL flights. However the Saturday 3 December JQ515, the 1350 hours did not take off until 1500 so arrival of A320 VH-VFU will be at around 1627, 72 minutes behind schedule.

Later on 3 December, JQ740, the 1825 hours from LST up to MEL that took off at 1916 is arriving at 2006, 36 late. Aircraft is A320 VH-VGT.

JQ213, the 1620 hours latish afternoon from MEL across to AKL was airborne at around 1815.

The delayed JQ8Z from SIN to MEL was originally to arrive at 1920 hours: this has become 2220.

JQ18 from HKT into MEL (B788 VH-VKA), the scheduled 1020 arrival has become due about 2120.

The JQi sorry situation continues with the Monday 5 December JQ8 ex SIN that normally arrives in MEL at 0620 hours cancelled.
 
Frustratingly, there is little information about why JQi is so out of kilter.
I vaguely recall similar cancellations involving the 787 back in July this year (2016) involving city pairs BKK,MEL,SIN. Back then unscheduled maintenance also stopped the carefully choreographed high utilisation schedule dead in its tracks.
 
On Monday 5 December, JQ43, the 0955 hours MEL - DPS is expected to depart at about 1145 while later in the day, JQ7, the very unreliable 'high noon' JQ7 from MEL to SIN should push back at around 1345 instead of 1200. There are no easily discernible late arrivals that are contributing to this.

JQ575, the 0610 hours BNE - MEL is showing as delayed in its departure to 0630 but had not done so by then: arrival is estimated at 1010 rather than 0935.

The 0700 hours BNE - CNS (JQ928) has been cancelled.

The 0610 hours CNS - MEL, JQ941, took off at 0651 so arrival should be at 1109 instead of 1030. VH-VFX is the A320.

Quickstatus just kindly advised me that as at 1615 on Monday 5 December 2016, SYD airport operations have been grounded due to impending thunderstorm activity.

This will naturally cause numerous delays and presumably cancellations for the rest of the evening.

The Monday 5 December 2016 JQ749, the 1515 hours SYD to LST has been delayed (at least in part) by this significant thunderstorm activity around SYD with A320 VH-VQM not taking off until after 1631 hours.

UPDATE: As at 1653, JQ749 (A320 VH-VQM) appears to have left its waiting for clearance position on runway 34R and is taxiing either back to a gate or to 34L from what I can see on FR24 in SYD. An update from any AFFers as to what is going on would be great - has the plane insufficient reserves of fuel to make it to LST given its lengthy wait for takeoff?

Due to the late departure of JQ43 from MEL for DPS earlier today (MOnday 5 December), the returning JQ44 is expected to arrive in MEL at about 0020 hours on Tuesday 6 rather than 2255 on Monday 5.

Numerous thunderstorm-related delays are occurring on Monday 5's evening.

JQ610, the 2035 AVV - SYD took off at 2125 with A320 VH-VGU. Arrival is forecast for 2238, 38 minutes tardy.

The 2000 hours MEL - NTL, JQ478 was airborne at 2111 hours with its arrival suggested as 2227, 57 late. A320 VH-VFO is the aircraft.

JQ770 (2015 from SYD across to ADL) was in the sky at 2124 with arrival suggested as 2301 hours in lieu of 2150, VH-VQH being the A320.

The 2015 hours SYD - PER got off lightly as it was airborne at 2053, so arrival of VH-VGZ should be at 2252, 37 minutes late.

In contrast in the other direction, the 1815 hours ADL - SYD JQ761 was not in the sky until 2040, so it should pull in to its SYD assigned gate at 2249 instead of 2040. VH-VFK is the A320.

In further Monday 5 December delays, JQ427 (1940 hours OOL - SYD, A321 VH-VWZ) must have approval from the Federal Minister's delegate as arrival is not expected until 2318, 68 late. The flight was airborne at 2055 AEST.
 
On Tuesday 6 December, JQ966 (0600 hours OOL - CNS) took off at 0645 so arrival will be at 0907 instead of 0825 for A320 VH-VQL.
 
Wednesday 7 December sees JQ737, the 1135 MEL - LST and JQ438, the mid afternoon MEL to OOL timetabled to depart at 1500 hours both cancelled.
 
Wednesday 7 December late evening has JQ44, the 1425 hours from DPS to MEL that is so often late not having become airborne until 1602. Arrival should be at 0003 on Thursday 8, 63 late with B788 Vh-VKA the taskmaster.
