Jetstar Delays/Cancellations

Continuing with the huge number of delays on Friday 10 February afflicting the 'orange cancer', JQ912, the 1110 SYD - TSV took off at 1334. Arrival of A320 VH-VQW should be at about 1453, 123 minutes tardy.

A321 VH-VWX on JQ531, the mid morning 0935 hours BNE - MEL took off at 1141, so the scheduled arrival of 1300 hours has turned into one 96 minutes late at 1436.

JQ435 from OOL down to MEL, the 0825 hours is worse, with it not in the sky until 1138. Arrival of VH-VWQ, another A321 is not predicted until 1428, 163 minutes behind schedule.

The 1005 hours JQ409 from OOL to SYD was airborne at 1205 in the shape of A320 VH-VFL; it should arrive at 1418, 103 late.

The 0920 hours Friday 10 February JQ957 from CNS to SYD took off at 1139, with A321 VH-VWY arriving at about 1524, 129 late.

JQ465 (1230 hours lunchtime flight from BNK down to MEL) was airborne at 1400.A320 VH-VFU should pull in to MEL at around 1554, 79 late.

JQ787 (the 1235 hours MCY - SYD) took off at 1356 with A320 VH-VGI. Arrival is forecast as 1622, 72 late.

The 1345 hours JQ739 from MEL for the short hop to LST was airborne at 1437; arrival should be 35 minutes behind schedule at 1525 this afternoon. Aircraft is A320 VH-JQX.

JQ709 (1500 hours MEL down to HBA, A321 VH-VWW) was airborne at 1636; arrival is predicted as about 1742, 87 late.

The 1120 hours AYQ tourist service to MEL, A320 VH-VFV operating as JQ665 took off at 1329. Its at tarmac spot time should be at about 1729, 109 minutes behind schedule.

JQ921 (1135 hours lunchtime flight from DRW across to CNS, A320 VH-XSJ) was airborne at 1354; arrival should be at 1645, 130 minutes tardy.

A321 VH-VWQ has returned towards the Gold Coast as JQ436 with this 1300 hours early afternoon flight taking off at 1538, so it should reach its destination at about 1628, 143 minutes tardy. This means on this leg all being well it will have picked up 20 minutes compared to how it was going on the previous leg.

The 1530 hours MEL - NTL JQ476 is more than 70 minutes late departing while two later MEL - HBA flights, JQ713 and JQ715 are expected to respectively be at least 60 and 90 minutes late departing.

JQ414, the 1610 hours from SYD to OOL took off at 1840, so it is more than two hours late on Friday 10 February. Aircraft is A321 VH-VWT.

Earlier today - a couple of posts above - A320 VH-VFL was about 103 minutes late; as at about 1848 with its arrival as JQ415 into SYD ex OOL, it is about 108 late so it has not picked up any time over a few hours of flights and turnarounds.

B788 VH-VKJ on the 1745 hours SYD - HNL (JQ3) had yet to take off as at 1846.

Wouldn't that be a minor upgrade over the normal equipment?

Apologies, Clifford, I will delete the incorrect descriptor. Very funny and thanks!

JQ17, the 1525 hours MEL - HKT that is another B788 has been delayed on Friday 10 February to a Saturday 11 amended 10 hour late departure time of 0135 hours. It looks to be formed by JQ44. the punctual 2255 hours arrival in MEL from DPS.

JQ23 from MEL to NRT, the 0045 hours Saturday 11 departure should instead push back at about 0150. It is being formed by the arriving JQ24 that is about 10 minutes late with expected Saturday 11 arrival at roughly 0030.

Also on Saturday 11, JQ35 from MEL to DPS is expected to depart almost three hours late at 2135.

In further Saturday 11 February delays, JQ18, the 1020 hours scheduled arrival from HKT will instead come in at 1930 tonight, while JQ2 from HNL, the 1605 mid afternoon arrival should instead be in MEL at 0500 hours on Sunday 12.

Affected departures include JQ43 from MEL to DPS, delayed from 0955 to originally a predicted 1250 hours but now 1345 and as mentioned above the evening flight to DPS, JQ35.

It looks like JQ8994 from SYD to MEL, an empty working, should arrive at roughly 1225 so it may be forming the delayed JQ43. VH-VKA is the B788.

JQ7 from MEL to SIN is expected to leave at 1330 rather than 1200 'high noon.'

JQ763 (0900 hours ADL across to SYD, A320 VH-VQW) was not airborne until 1035; arrival is predicted for 1242, 77 minutes behind schedule.

The huge number of JQ domestic delays yesterday is not particularly surprising. Boarding for my flight (JQ931 CNS-BNE) was delayed by over an hour, and once it began the whole boarding process took almost 2 hours! We departed 3 hours late. Due to the system outage there were a lot of double-ups with seating, so it took ages to get everyone a seat, and also to account for everyone on board and their bags.

They also were unable to issue boarding passes for a period of time, so were hand-writing them. This was my boarding pass:

Despite the chaos, the Jetstar ground staff and cabin crew were great. I suspect many of the JQ ground staff in CNS had been called in on their day off, as many were not wearing proper uniform (and one was even wearing thongs).

Great post Mattg including a wonderful photo.

For the record, JQ931 yesterday (Friday 10 February) was almost three hours late as Mattg refers.

In these circumstances, in the interests of trying to regain a bit of time, despite historic airline practice and 'security' wouldn't it be better to merely issue (say) 180 boarding passes numbered sequentially and ask everyone to find their own seat, unreserved railway-style, on board, with the first passengers from the front and rear stairs to board asked to do so from the middle rows on the plane?

Some Australian and overseas LCCs have either tried this in the past or continue to use this method. There would be complaints from separated families and couples but isn't in this situation endeavouring to regain some of the lost time of more importance?

We were told that for security reasons they had to account for every passenger, including where they were sitting, and also for each passenger's luggage. In fact, every passenger was asked when boarding whether they had checked in luggage, and this was noted on their manifest.

For the record it was a completely full flight.

Loading and aircraft balance would also potentially be a factor (unless every seat full).

JQ28 from HKT is arriving in SYD 36 minutes late on Sunday 12 February with B788 VH-VKD.

The 1205 hours MEL - NTL, JQ474 (A320 VH-VGO) did not take off until 1305.

JQ633, the non-daily from ADL to AVV (A320 VH-XSJ) was not airborne until 1151 this morning despite a scheduled departure of 1025; arrival should be at 1331, 81 minutes late. The 1240 hours JQ604 from AVV to SYD, JQ604, is therefore delayed to at least 1405 in its departure. This may have further flow on effects with later flights by XSJ this afternoon and early evening, depending largely on what turnaround times have been incorporated.

The 1520 hours MEL - SYD (JQ514) has been cancelled as has JQ521, the later 1725 hours SYD down to MEL.

In further on Sunday 12 February, JQ513, the 1245 hours from SYD down to MEL (A321 VH-VWX) did not take off until 1407. It should arrive at roughly 1523, 63 minutes late. This will delay JQ709 from a 1500 hours departure in MEL by 70 minutes on its trip down to HBA.

The scheduled 1315 hours arrival in MEL ex MCY, JQ793 is estimated to instead arrive at 1755, almost five hours late. The aircraft, A320 VH-VFD had landed on time from MEL in MCY at 0910 this mrning so it must have had problems up there.

JQ744 from LST to MEL should arrive 106 minutes late at 1811 early this evening - A320 VH-VFV is the aircraft.

UPDATE: JQ516 (northbound 1620 hours MEL - SYD, A321 VH-VWY) took off at 1730; arrival should be roughly an hour late at 1840.

An intense storm cell passed over SYD at about 1730 hours on Sunday 12 February 2017 resulting in many aircraft being placed in holding patterns.

JQ756, the 1625 hours from HBA up to SYD (A320 VH-VGV) took off at 1644 about five minutes late but is doing laps over Marulan, NSW (near Goulburn) so is not predicted to arrive until about 1902 hours, 52 minutes tardy.

The next flight for VH-VGV was JQ523 (1840 hours SYD down to MEL that was in the sky at 2001.) It is estimated to arrive at 2116, 66 late, showing again how hard it is to reciver from delays involving holding patterns as at busier times many other aircraft are in the same situation. There is a compounding effect.

The Sunday 12 February JQ524 (2045 hours MEL - SYD, A320 VH-VGV) must have an exemption from 'the delegate' as it did not take off until 2201 AEDT and so is unlikely to be landing at SYD by the required 2300 hours to avoid the curfew.

One wonders on what grounds this would be approved.

UPDATE: JQ524 landed from the north at 2257, a very fast trip with no other aircraft to be slowed down for.

Continuing with Monday 13 February, JQ797, the 2010 MEL arrival ex MCY will not arrive until about 2140, 90 minutes tardy. This is because northbound JQ796 departed MEL about an hour later than its timetabled 1455 hours midafternoon mandated time.

Not sure whether it is an empty ('ferry') working due to maintenance, a special (i.e. charter) with passengers or something else but on Monday 13 February JQ8994 (A320 VH-VQS) took off at 1909 and at about 2145 should arrive in MEL. An unusual working.

Wednesday 15 February sees JQ972, the 0630 hours from MEL to PER cancelled.

Some months ago, I well informed AFFer (bismarck?) drew our attention to how JQ MEL - PER flights (one return per day of the two) were regularly cancelled, allegedly due to a pilot or other flight crew shortage. Is history repeating itself?

UPDATE: On the same date's evening, JQ120 (1455 hours NAN - SYD that was airborne at 1809, A320 VH-VQA) should arrive at about 2109 instead of 1845.

On Thursday 16 February, JQ506 (0915 hours MEL - SYD that became airborne at 0957, A320 VH-VFT) should arrive at 1115, 35 minutes late.

The JQi flight JQ58 on its domestic leg from BNE to MEL, the 0850 hours did not take off until 1044. B788 VH-VKI should arrive at 1402 instead of 1215 hours.
